Becky Albert of the Hospitality House in Quincy was our featured speaker. The mission of the Quincy Hospitality House is to provide affordable temporary lodging for patients and their loved ones accessing health care in Quincy, showing compassion and caring to those they serve. This non-profit, volunteer organization was established in 1998 by Blessing Hospital, Blessing Volunteers in Partnership and the Adams County Medical Society Alliance. It is operated by a volunteer Board of Directors, volunteer staff, and the Blessing Hospital Volunteer Services Department. Guests must be a patient or visitor/caregiver of a patient currently seeking medical care in the Quincy area. Rooms are also open for Day Use, such as for a nap and shower, or waiting to see the doctor again, based on availability. Rooms are $30 per night and each room includes two twin beds. Maximum occupancy is two people per room. Lodging Grants may be available for those unable to pay the $30.For those wishing to use a room for the day - perhaps after a medical procedure, test or treatment, the Day Use only rate is $15. The Quincy Hospitality House is located at 1129 Oak across the parking lot from Blessing Hospital. David Arns, a volunteer Public Relations Committee member for The Hospitality House, also mentioned a few of the organizations upcoming fund-raisers in June and September. David also provided an introduction for Ms. Albert after he received a stirring introduction from our very own Charlie Ledbetter.

This 'n That

Since President Jared Haugh and President-Elect Brian Koch were not in attendance, the meeting was run by our third in line, Cory Watson. There was no bell to ring as Jared had it with him which begs me to ask the question, "Who carries a bell around with them?"

John Spring set things in motion with a prayer that included congratulations to member James E. Douglas on his son, Scott Douglas, being named the Athletic Director for Quincy Senior High School.
Newly elected Adams County States Attorney Gary Farha began the Pledge of Allegiance with an I am soon to be in charge type of "I" which was followed and completed by the rest of the brethren.

The one and only Bruce Broemmel conducted the Tail-Twisting duties and managed to tell a Viagra joke that involved the pulling of one's tooth by a dentist. You had to be there.

The 50-50 Card Draw, worth over $425 resume Friday thanks to Dennis Koch's efforts. David Adam had the winning ticket but drew a 5 of Spades. So the deck, now down to 30 cards, still holds the winning Ace of Spades.

The Club held a first reading for membership for David Brink being proposed by Joel Koch.

Dave Poland advised the Club of our obligation for the annual Dogwood Parade to be held this year on April 30th.

Steve Green updated us on the status of Gus Macker. So far 17 teams have signed up which is normal for this time of year. Steve passed out a sample Macker post card that is going out soon to locations as far away as Springfield and Decatur.

The Board has decided we will continue to meet weekly at the Elk's Lodge at least through the Haugh administration.

Congratulations to Kyle and Kelly Awerkamp on becoming the parents of a brand new baby girl last week. This makes Art Awerkamp a great uncle and Mike Brennan a grandfather. It also makes Ted Awerkamp, a former member, a grandfather as well. Do they accept diapers at Starcrest? Congrats to all.

My apologies to those of you who took my April Fool's comments of my leaving the Club seriously. I wanted to find out who actually reads this rag and I found that out.

One person who seemed to be the most vocal about it was Eric Schultz and I know he doesn't ever read the bulletin and he even said "nobody ever reads it". With that said, lets have some fun. Since Eric was referred to as "Otis" when Barney Fife was at the Club a few weeks ago, make sure you make a point to stop by Eric Friday and say "Hi Otis"!

Line of the Week

Goes to Bill Stalder. After Steve Green asked if anyone needed copies of the Gus Macker application, Bill uttered Chuck Venvertloh will make copies for you. Chuck responded he would have it ready by June or July which was funny in its own right.
Exchange Minute

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month!

With the start of baseball season comes Child Abuse Prevention month and Blue Mondays. Blue Mondays are a compelling way to raise awareness and interest about our National Project. Simply wear Blue on each Monday in April - a blue shirt, tie or even a blue ribbon on your lapel will do the trick.

Remember too, that Hy-Vee will be selling blue ribbons at both Quincy locations to benefit our child abuse prevention efforts (check with Steve Labs on the dates that the ribbons will be available).

Thank you Steve and Thank you Hy-Vee for providing such an outstanding fund raiser for out CAP efforts!

April also brings the "Believe in the Blue" kits to the area - check with Dennis or Jared for tip cards for talking with your children and other valuable information that can be shared with agencies in town that assist parents in preventing child abuse.

If you have an event coming up this month for kids, don't forget that Time-Out Teddy is available - just contact Dennis or Joel for information. Time-Out Teddy is the mascot of the National Exchange Club and helps parents remember to "Take time out to be a better parent".

There are many ways to help prevent child abuse - just get involved! Nobody likes to talk about it and many don't believe it can be a problem in "our" community - but it is! At least once a week there is an article or news story about an arrest on child abuse or neglect charges. Child abuse happens way too often in this community and it is 100% preventable.

Our work with Cornerstone, Transitions and the Children's Advocacy Network are just a few ways that the Quincy Exchange Club works to make our community a better place to live, work and play!
