This Friday
Good Friday This Friday is Good Friday so you have two choices. Those choices don't have anything to do with your choice of eating fish or meat. You can either go to Church Friday or come to the Exchange Club meeting. I suggest we "see you in Church" (as the old Indian Fighter Paul Clarkson would have said) because there will be no one to see you at the meeting since we won't have one.

Friday Last

We met at the Elks Lodge in Quincy again last Friday to hear Mr. Macker himself, Scott McNeal, officially kickoff the "Macker Season". This year will mark year number 26 for the Gus Macker Basketball Tournament in Quincy. Quincy is one of 39 cities that Macker Basketball will be held including some states outside of the Midwest like South Dakota, North Carolina, Florida and Texas. This year the Macker website of www.macker.com is much more inter-active and Macker plans to extensively use Facebook and Twitter to recruit teams. Of course, Macker wouldn't happen in Quincy without the 6 major local sponsors including Refreshment Services Pepsi, Quincy Medical Group, The Knapheide Corporation, WGEM-TV, The Herald Whig and Republic Services. A special thanks goes out to Quincy Mack for sponsoring the Dream Court as well. Scott thanked our Macker Hall of Famer, Mike Lavery, who brought Macker to Quincy 26 years ago. He also thanked our Macker co-chairs Steve Green and Perry Terwelp who are heading the event for the third straight year. A special thanks to Eric Thomas who helped with a video presentation covering the early years of Macker. Steve Green, who introduced Scott McNeal, also thanked the committee chairmen for their hard work in readying us for the event which will be held May 28th and 29th. One of those chairmen is Vic Welper who asked the membership to help sell the court sponsorships for $300 each.

Heather Davis, the Special Olympics Director for our area shared her news of the Quincy Public Schools coming on board with Macker this year as well.

This 'n That

The opening prayer was administered by President Jared Haugh. He was followed by Todd Moore who began the Pledge of Allegiance with a boastful "I".

The Tail-Twister duties were handled by Steve Peters who attempted to get though a joke despite numerous interruptions including a Rich Howell phone call. Probably his wife reminding him it was his 60th wedding anniversary. Congratulations Rich & Jean.

President Haugh took the opportunity to congratulate Gary Farha on his winning the States Attorney position in the recent election.

This was followed by the presentation of "The News" by Jeff Dorsey which left no one in stitches. Perhaps more Irish humor needed to be injected into the script.

The 50-50 Card Draw, worth over $395, was conducted by Brian Koch. Jimmy Louthen got the opportunity to purchase a new home (plate) with the winnings but he drew a Jack of Hearts. So the deck shrinks to 31 cards and the pot climbs again for next Friday.

Our annual March Madness/Burger Bash Night was held at Tony's Too last week and was quite a success. For those who stayed late, they got the opportunity to hear Skip Rueter attempt to tell the "Need More Horses" joke. By the time he finished the Indian was gone. Special thanks to Jared Haugh for putting it all together. Those who attended had a great time with great food as well. Thanks Mark Aleman for the wonderful spread.

Exchange Minute

April is Child Abuse Prevention month

A child is abused in this country approximately every 30 seconds. A 2012 study conducted by Prevent Child Abuse America found that child abuse costs our nation $220 million each day - more than $80 billion annually. More importantly, we know that child abuse is 100% preventable. The value of effective prevention strategies and programs that can demonstrate positive outcomes has long been known.

Exchange's National Project - the Prevention of Child Abuse - has assisted nearly 700,000 families in breaking the cycle of violence, creating safer homes for 1.75 million children. Using clinically proven practices such as our Parent Aide model to prevent child abuse reduces the resources needed to deal with the consequences of child abuse for years to come.

Through your generous contributions, the NEC Foundation has provided direct support to our network of Exchange Club Child Abuse Centers and funding for the annual Symposium for more than 30 years. Held in conjunction with the National Convention, the symposiums provide valuable training to our CAP center directors and staff. Your donations make it possible to continue the tradition of outstanding speakers and informative sessions for those on the front lines of child abuse prevention!

We are making a difference! The number of children who were abused and neglected in the United States has fallen from more than 1.5 million in 1993 to 1.25 million in 2006 and 679,000 in 2013, the most recent study prepared by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services available. Still, approximately 1,500 children die each year from abuse and neglect. We've come so far since adopting Child Abuse Prevention in 1979 but we still have a long way to go - your contributions are truly making a difference in the lives of many grateful children!
