This Friday
Quincy Mayor Kyle Moore presents the Annual State of the City address to our Club at the Eagles Nest Hotel & Conference Center. It has been an interesting year for the City of Quincy and it will be interesting to hear the Mayor's comments. This would be a wonderful meeting to invite a prospective member to join you on Friday for Quincy's finest hour.

Friday Last

Vicky Eidson, the Director of Public Affairs, was our speaker last Friday and she filled us in on all the happenings at Quincy University. The school now has an enrollment of 1400 students with 39 Major Graduate Programs and 4 Graduate Programs available. Ms. Eidson reviewed the success of a few of Q.U.'s students. The theme of the program was "Community Partnerships" and Quincy University has developed many of them in the area. For instance, many students have been on mission trips to aid people in need. They have held a Day of Service where all classes were postponed to allow students the opportunity to help in the community in various projects. They have partnered with Quincy's Great River Aviation as well as with Blessing Rieman College of Nursing. They provide internship opportunities for local businesses, do student teaching at local schools, hold family fun nights and provide speed networking with the business community. They also provide a multitude of sporting activities. So much so, that 49% of the enrolled students are involved in sports on campus. Thank you to Vicki Eidson for enlightening us on so many opportunities in our own back yard at Quincy University. Thanks to Jared Haugh for his introduction.

This 'n That

Jared Haugh got the ball rolling with a rousing prayer that included verbiage related to our topic of Quincy University.

The honor of presenting the Pledge of Allegiance went to John Spring who provided the Club with an emphatic "I" which was followed by a unified utterance of the remaining words by Club members.

The 50-50 Card Draw, conducted by Brian Koch, saw Eric Frese hold the winning ticket but he further reduced the cards in the deck by drawing a King of Spades (remember you need to draw the Ace of Spades to win the pot). So the pot of $366 now will climb again.

Steve Peters was the Tail-Twister and told a joke along the way. He started to tell another one and stopped saying if he told that one he wouldn't be invited back next week. That prompted the members to all yell "Tell it, Tell it".

Rich Zeidler announced that he will be jumping into Moorman Lake in this year's Polar Plunge for Special Olympics on Saturday, February 27. He was asking for donations to Special Olympics on behalf of his jump. People were reaching into their pockets and then he said "I'll be wearing the pink tutu outfit with 9 women around me, so come see me." Just the thought of him wearing a tutu caused many to withdraw their hands from their pockets. As far as seeing him with 9 women, I'll watch the women instead.

It was announced that Jim Douglas has been reinstated as a member of the Club. Thanks to Mike Lavery for making that happen.

The next meeting of Character Champions will be held at John Wood Community College on Tuesday, February 23. The Character Champions event is planned for the 1st week of September. Chuck Venvertloh is the Chairman.

At the Club's board meeting on February 18, the Board approved a $300 donation to the Girls Scouts for cover camp fees to Camp Tapawingo this summer.

A special thanks goes to Curt Moore, Dick Wentura, Joel Koch and Brian Koch for removing the risers used for the head table and the remaining items of ours from Stoney Creek. If there were others assisting please let me know and I will acknowledge you for your help.

President Jared Haugh mentioned at the recent board meeting that the March Madness Night would be held at Tony's Too on Wednesday, March 16. The cost for the meal and fun would be $20. More details are coming.

Exchange Minute

A new club in Lincolnland

On Thursday evening past, the Exchange Club of DuPage County held their POM (Permanent Organization Meeting) to become the newest Exchange Club in the country and the first new club in Lincolnland in several years. District President Dawn Portner and Regiona Vice President Scot Warren led the club building effort, which was sponsored by the Exchange Club of Naperville. Past National president Lou Molitor served as the National Representative to the club's meeting.

Club building is essential to keeping the organization healthy and growing and this year, 12 new clubs have been built to date. 5 are "traditional clubs while the other seven are Excel, Jr. Excel and Collegiate clubs.

Club building is not an easy proposition. Dawn and Scot have been working the DuPage County area for more than a year to build enough support to get the club started. Busy lives are the biggest detriment to getting and keeping a club going. Once the club is built, Dawn and Scot and the Naperville club will spend quite a bit of time mentoring and assisting the new club get off the ground. Fortunately for the club, they have some great mentors to help them along.

A renewed effort is going to be made to get an Excel club built at Quincy High School this spring, hopefully in time to provide some help for Macker. We have the support of the high school administration and Excel would be a great way for the students to get a shot at leadership and helping the community. That effort will be led by Joel Koch, Mike Llewellyn and Dennis Koch.

The network of Excel clubs is growing across the country. As more students go through Excel, we're beginning to see more Collegiate clubs being built. It's a long process, but as those students graduate and begin their adult lives, hopefully they will find their way into local Exchange Clubs.
