This Friday
Once again this week we will congregate at the Eagles Nest Hotel & Conference Center. This Friday we will find out about everything happening at Quincy University. The campus has made some dramatic changes over the past few years and the enrollment continues to climb. Our speaker is only known to this writer as Vicki. Perhaps she is on the witness protection program.

Friday Last

We returned to the Eagles Nest Hotel & Conference Center after a two year stint at Stoney Creek Inn. We did so without our risers, our bell, any audio equipment and other items to be mentioned later. Man, are we flexible. A big thank you to Executive Director: Clairice Hetzler of the Advocacy Network for Children formerly known as CASA. Clairice was kind enough to join us on short notice as our scheduled speaker Jeff Mays, the new Director of the Illinois Department of Employment Security, was double booked. At CASA their goal is really quite simple - to protect and uphold the rights of children when wrongs have been committed against them, to help abused or neglected children have safe permanent homes where they can thrive, to act as a powerful voice in these children's best interests and to educate the public about the plight of abused children.
Chuck Venvertloh (R) and President Jared Haugh (L) present a "big" check to Clairice Hetzler
Their office covers 9 counties and is currently involved with 500 cases involving abused children. They will be holding their largest fundraiser called the Biker Bash. It's a fundraising dinner and auction on Saturday, April 2nd at The Ambiance. We helped them get a jump start on their fundraising as we presented a $5,000 check to the Advocacy Network for Children.

Youth of the Month

Emily Beck, QHS

We featured our Youth of the Month for February as well. The honor went to Emily Beck of Quincy Senior High School. Emily is a lifelong resident of Quincy and has five sisters. Her family is currently in the process of adopting another girl. She is ranked 4th out of 441 in her class and currently has a GPA of 4.53. She is planning on attending Wheaton College next year. She is a member of the Q City Pommers, the Quincy High School Marching Band, has performed in Quincy High School musicals, a member of the National Honor Society and Beta Club as well as Show Choir. Emily is also a member of the Life Point Church where she is an active member of the youth group. Congratulations to Emily Beck. Emily's parents, Thomas and Amy Beck were in attendance along with Emily's councilor Jessica Beaston. Thanks to Mike Llewellyn for his introduction.

This 'n That

We all rose for the prayer by Jared Haugh, but before we reached our pinnacle in standing the prayer has ended. I believe it went "Thank you God, Amen". Jared, a man of words ...wasn't.

Dave Grimm had the dubious honor of beginning the Pledge of Allegiance before a phantom flag. Usually, when this happens we grab three members wearing Red, White and Blue shirts and make them stand together, but not this time.

One of our own has been taking a pretty good character assassination in his campaign for Adams County States Attorney. Gary Farha asked and was granted the opportunity to defend himself in this very public attack. As is Gary's way, he corrected some of the things said by his opponent and did so with class. Oh, what he could have said!

Gary Farha also brought two guests to the meeting. They were Todd Eyler and Tom Leeper. Joel Koch had David Brink as his guest and potential member as well.
Joel Koch handled the 50-50 card draw. Stevie "Duck" Wellman had a chance to enlarge his beak account, I mean bank account, by $315 but he drew the 3 of Diamonds. So the pot will grow this Friday.

Jeff Dorsey conducted tail-twisting duties which included a story about a 5 iron and a bludgeoning death of a woman's husband. See what you miss when you don't come to a meeting? This is why you need to join us Friday.

We will NOT be returning to Stoney Creek. Therefore, we will need to remove the risers used for the head table from that location. The time and date to do so is undetermined at this time. Please keep an eye on your emails for further information. We will need about 6 to 8 guys when it is time to move them

Line of the Week

The honor goes to Gary Peters. After hearing that we are leaving Stoney Creek due to a rent increase, Gary said

 - "Gee, before you know it they will want The Avenue of Lights"
Exchange Minute

Programs are us

As we approach our 70th anniversary, I thought maybe a trip to the archives might be in order. This week, I have a letter from Bud Willer to individuals members of the club in 1947. As many of you know, Bud Willer was a charter member of the club and our version of the ACE award is named in his honor. Bud served as Program Chairman in the early years of the club and realized the need early on to have great programs to keep the interest of the membership.

Here is the content of the letter sent from Bud to the membership:

Sometime ago, I announced to the members of the Exchange Club that I would seek their assistance in building up better programs for our noon luncheon meetings.

In order to have a varied and entertaining program it is necessary that we have different types of speakers and programs. For this reason, I am appealing to you for your cooperation in setting up future programs.
I am asking you to work with your fellow Exchangite, [name], in setting up a program for Friday, [date]. You may provide any type of entertainment or program that you choose, and I feel sure that we will have something that will interest all members.
I am contacting other members for following weeks and this way it will give everyone a voice in the type of program that he dersires. If you desire someone from your line of buisness, or for example, the Internal Revenue Collector, Commander of the American Legion, or some official to speak on the program, you may feel free to follow along any of the ideas that you two may work up. If you have some available entertainment, such as a magician or musical numbers, you may work out that program between yourselves. I would appreciate hearing from you about [date].
I wish to thank you in advance for your cooperation in this movement. I believe that if we all pitch in we will have much better programs, which should bring out better attendance.
 - James F Willer, Program Chairman

Programs that year included, Jim Woods - WTAD, Ed Hess - Electric Wheel, Will Gelston - Quincy Water Works, Fred Cox - Sun Life Ins, Mac Wenskunas - Quincy College, Stev Brooks - Mercantile, Lillian Schlagenhauf, Otto Nimtz - BSA Chicago, Capt E.L. Wingerter, Dr. R.O. Evans - Quincy Public Schools, Dr. James Hafner, Elizabeth Wallace - Adams Co TB Assoc, George Irwin, and Rome Boehenhoff, among others.

The tradition of great programs was born with Bud Willer and continued through others, including Gary Peters and now Check Venvertloh. As always, if you have an idea for a program, let Chuck know.
