Friday Last

Heather Davis, the Executive Director of Special Olympics of West-Central Illinois updated us on the upcoming schedule for the Special Olympians in our area including the Polar Plunge coming up on February 27th. She also re-visited the past events and thanked the Club for our sponsorship of the recent Basketball Tournament at Quincy University. The one thing she really wanted us to know is how appreciative the athletes and their families are of having the opportunity for them or their family member to participate in activities like basketball and track. Thanks to Perry Terwelp who thanked the sponsors of the basketball event which included   Hy-Vee, Refreshment Services Pepsi, Sterling Awards, The Exchange Club and Q.U. Hawks for Special Olympics. Perry also thanked Aaron Clark, Carlos Fernandez, Dave Adam, Steve Green, Rick & Ron Gengenbacher, Rich Lavery and Rene Beranex of Quincy University for going over and above to help out. The Club would also like to thank Rich Lavery for the idea and to Perry Terwelp for spearheading this event and turning it into a wonderful project. Thanks also to Eric Thomas for setting up the video that was shown.

Youth of the Month
Adriana Brown, QND

Also recognized last week was our Youth of the Month, Adriana Brown, daughter of Hector and Luz Brown. Adriana is senior at Quincy Notre Dame High School and ranks 4th out of 99 students in her class. She scored a 28 on her ACT and carries a GPA of 4.09. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Society of Academic Achievement. She is an accomplished violin player and is a member of the Quincy Symphony Orchestra as well as a member of the Quincy Youth orchestra. Adriana, who speaks Spanish fluently, is also a four year member of the QND Volleyball team as well. Her plans are to attend Maryville University in St. Louis after graduating.
Thanks to QND Principal Mark McDowell for providing the introduction for Adriana. Special thanks, as always, goes out to the committee for this wonderful program led by Chairman John Johannes.
The Youth of the Month program is now in its 30th year.

This 'n That

John Spring got the proceedings going with the opening prayer which included mention of the passing of Rich Zeidler's mother recently.

Randy Frese began the Pledge of Allegiance with a very political sounding "I" (Whatever that is?)

President Jared Haugh mentioned that both Mark Aleman and Glen Swick have been reinstated as members of the Club. Both were so excited about the reinstatement that neither showed up for the meeting.

There was no tail-twister last Friday as it was "National Tail-Twister Day" so they took the day off.

The 50-50 Card-Draw was held and it was like Yogi said "de'ja' vu all over again" as Rick Veihl again won the opportunity to select the Ace of Spades. He drew a 4 of Clubs so the pot of $220+ grows some more. Thank you Rick for minimizing the deck for the rest of us (if we ever get the opportunity to draw a card). Thanks to Joel Koch for conducting the card draw even though he needed to come up with some makeshift tickets.

A reminder: Rick Hummel will make his annual visit to see us on January 29th to update us on the 2016 Cardinal season ahead.

Joke of the Week

The line of the week goes to, who else, Jared Haugh. Jared brought the Club up to speed on the Youth of the Month project saying that Rich Howell actually began the project years ago when it was known as

 - "Pilgrim of the Month".

Exchange Minute

National Mid-Year Conference, Houston TX

District Presidents, District Presidents-Elect and the National Board met last week at the Hyatt Regency in Houston, Texas, site of the 98th National Exchange Club Convention this July.

DP's and DPE's, including Lincolnland's Dawn Portner and Bill Froese, participated in a number of exercises designed to strengthen the District. Sessions on new club building included commitments from each District to increase the number of traditional Exchange Clubs. (Lincolnland currently has a new club-building project in Downers Grove that is nearing completion.)

Each District was assigned a mentor to assist the officers in fulfilling their commitments. NEC Foundation President Dennis Koch was assigned to mentor the Mid-America District, which consists of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri and Kansas.

Speaking of Dennis, he also spoke to the assembled group at a luncheon on Saturday to update the group on the NEC Foundation and to kick off the Club-Giving segment of the ExchangeStrong campaign (formerly known as Campaign for Kids - Quarters for Kids for you old guys). You'll be hearing more about that in the weeks to come.

Houston offers many museums, sports, music and other attractions and is just a short 1 1/2 hour non-stop flight from St. Louis. It would be great to see some Quincy Exchangites at this year's convention!
