This Friday
Our topic this Friday will be Special Olympics as their Director Heather Davis reviews the recent basketball tournament and previews some events coming up. We will also honor another young person with the Youth of the Month award this Friday as well.

Friday Last

We got the latest on the Quincy University and John Wood Community College Men's basketball programs. Coaches Marty Bell and Brad Hoyt were our featured speakers. Following a David Adam introduction, Coach Hoyt took the opportunity to review his season so far at John Wood Community College. JWCC is coming off of a national tournament visit the last 2 years and a chance to be in the title game last year. They have 13 new players this season and a very tough schedule. So they were off to a very difficult start but have won 4 of the last 6 games. Their league play will begin in a couple of weeks and it would be a good opportunity to see the Trailblazers in action at home. One of their alumni, Jordan Johnson, transferred to Wisconsin-Milwaukee and currently is second in the nation in assists per game. That gives you some kind of idea of the quality coming out of the John Wood program.

Marty Bell, now his 13th year at the helm at Q.U., recently won his 200th game of his career. The Hawks have won 9 of the last 10 games and are tied for first in the Western Division of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. They have had 5 season ending injuries on their squad, 4 with ACLs and one with a broken arm. According to Coach Bell his team has "grit". If they guard, they win. If they don't guard, they lose. Bell also believes it's going to be a wide open conference this year in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Thanks to both coaches for taking some time out of their schedules to update us on their programs.

This 'n That

It was certainly good to see Dan Selby back with us Friday and he was kind enough to present the opening prayer.

Barry Cheyne with a thunderous "I" began the Pledge of Allegiance. You think the guy was a Lt. Colonel or something.

President Jared Haugh passed around thank you notes and cards from the Hearing Impaired Kids for all to see.

Haugh also kept his streak of mentioning Rich Howell at every single meeting he has presided over. Rich was passing around a picture of him and his lovely bride both sitting on Santa's lap. Rich was on Santa's left knee which is now scheduled for replacement next week at the N.P. Medical Center.

President Haugh also mentioned that there will be a March Madness Event coming up in a few weeks. Details will be forthcoming, probably in April.

Bruce Broemmel had the honors of fleecing the flock and told a joke that cost the Big Dog an extra buck because of a comment of how bad it was (Like the Big Dog has any room to talk after the last edition of the news). Thanks for the effort Bruce. Bruce also received some "humor" assistance from Sonny (what did you call the President?) Christner.

Condolences go to Rich Zeidler and his Family on the loss of Rich's mother back on December 22nd. Thoughts and prayers!

The 50-50 Card-Draw returned this Friday. The pot finally "surged" past the $200 mark and stood at $220 for the winner. Mike McLaughlin had the winning ticket but drew a 6 of Spades. Thanks to Brian Koch for conducting the card draw. Brian, try not to show the Ace of Spades in your pocket for the next drawing.

We had one guest and that was Adam Duesterhaus. Adam was the guest of Chuck Venvertloh. What was Adam thinking?

For future reference, we will hold the George Irwin Arts Awards meeting on January 22nd and Rick Hummel will make his annual visit to see us on January 29th to update us on the 2016 Cardinal season ahead.

Joke of the Week

Jared Haugh gets the honors again. After explaining that due to a mix up, we almost had no food available for today's meeting, President Haugh said that

 - "it is good to see that Curt Moore is no better at being House Chairman than he was as President".

Exchange Minute

Club Milestone

70 years ago this week, the makings of the Quincy Exchange Club started with informational meetings held at the Lincoln-Douglas Hotel.

Back in the day, the club was formed with one businessman representing each profession - so one banker, one lawyer, one shoe salesman, one jeweler, etc. were invited to join the club. The purpose was to "Exchange Ideas" with other businessmen in the community and not have to compete against other members for business. Andy Van Syckle, a shoe salesman at the time, was not able to join initially, as there was already a shoe salesman in the club. Andy soon joined, though, as a band director - a hobby he had outside of his full-time employment.

Times have changed and the Exchange Club has certainly evolved. Nationally, Exchange still has a few clubs that are still true "Business" clubs, and the faces have changed - some clubs are all men, some are all women, some black and some white and many are truly diversified - but each club works to make their community a better place to live, work and play.

Over the past 15 years (from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2015) There have been more than 170 members who have left the Quincy Exchange Club -  that works out to about 1 each and every month. Some have passed on, others have moved or changed employment that prevented them from being active in the club. Others have left for other reasons - they found that Exchange wasn't the right fit for them while others may not have felt welcome in our group. Those are the kind that we can prevent! When new members do join - and the good news is that there have been more than 150 members join in that same time period - we need to make them part of the group as quickly as possible. Get them involved in projects and maybe even keep them in mind when considering some of our frivolity! Keep recruiting - we need to keep the line moving!
