This Friday
Quincy Fire Chief Joe Henning will be our speaker this Friday with the topic being new hiring practices and regulations. Thanks to Chief Henning for re-arranging his schedule to join us Friday. He was scheduled to be our speaker last week and had no problem moving to this Friday to accommodate our celebration of Mel Dillman.

Friday Last

Last Friday we honored the late Mel Dillman as we took the complete hour to reflect on some of the things Mel did for this club including the humor he brought to it. We were also graced to have Mel's widow, Linda, with us and she added to the story telling that went on. The following people took the time to tell a few stories about Mel. Jared Haugh, Curt Moore, Jeff Dorsey, Dick Wentura, Bob Hays, Rick Gengenbacher, Rich Goughnour, Gary Peters, Phil Conover and Tom Tushaus, Several stories brought tears to some eyes because they were humorous and several because they were poignant. Mel was loved by all and will be missed tremendously. Thanks for the laughs Mel! We will miss you but I'll be damned if you think we are going to pay the postage to send this rag to you each week.

This 'n That

President Jared Haugh began the meeting with a serious prayer and Linda Dillman, a former Golden Deeds Award winner, began the Pledge of Allegiance. That was as serious as it got from that point forward.

President Haugh thanked Dennis and Joel Koch for putting on a special Spouses Party which included some wonderful music from Rick Gengenbacher's niece, Aspen.

A special thanks goes out to Perry Terwelp and Steve Green for chairing the Special Olympics Basketball Tournament. Thanks to all who helped.

Also thanks to Charlie Ledbetter and his GIVEAKIDACHANCE committee for holding another successful "Foster Care Kids and Family Christmas Dinner" which was held at the Senior Center. This year's event also featured the kids from Chaddock School as well. Kudos also go to Hy-Vee and the Gem City Detachment of the Marine Corps for assisting. Santa (Jeff Dorsey) was kept busy that night with well over 100 kids in attendance. Thanks to Mike Lewellyn for donning the Time-Out-Teddy suit at both the GIVEAKIDACHANCE party and during the championship game of the Special Olympics tournament.

A wonderful turnout took place for Mel Dillman's service at Christ Lutheran Church last Saturday. Jeff Dorsey presented the eulogy during the service with Club members leaving flags at the altar.

Don't forget we will collect our annual tip money again this week from each member of the Club for our weekly waitress, Jennifer Shaffer. If you weren't there last Friday be prepared to donate at least a $10 bill for all of her hard work during the year ($10 for 50 weeks of work comes out to 20 cents a week tip).

The 50-50 drawing conducted by Brian Koch saw Fred Lauder pick up his winning ticket off the floor and then draw an 8 of Hearts. The pot of $200 (still) grows.

The Club is working on details regarding our annual Christmas Luncheon. I can tell you it will be at the Quincy Boat Club on Wednesday, December 30th at 11:30 ish. The news will be presented along with a few other surprises.

We had plenty of guests including Linda Dillman, and Katie Cernea, who worked for Mel, along with former members Ted Awerkamp, Tom Tushaus, Jim Waterkotte and Phil Conover. It was good to see Danny Veihl in attendance as well.

Lincolnland District Board Meeting and Mid-Year Conference

Over the past weekend, the Lincolnland District board met in conjunction with the Mid-Year Educational Conference in Bloomington.

Although lengthy at 3 hours on a Friday evening, the board meeting was very productive. Each of the clubs in the district were discussed, with strengths and weaknesses and what the District could do to help being the topic. There are several clubs in the district that are reaching a critical level of membership - 12 or fewer members - and all of our clubs are getting older. The four loargest clubs - Naperville, Quincy, Joliet and Gurnee - all appear to be strong, but it was noted that those four clubs have lost a combined total of about 150 members over the past 4-5 years, so even they need some help. (for the record, Quincy has lost a net 30 members in that time frame). The most critical need at this time is the Bloomington club, which has voted to disband. This came as a surprise, as they have 18 members and have been active in their community for a very long time.

The focus of the conference on Saturday was to help clubs. Sessions on recruiting and retention, club building (and rebuilding), board and officer training, PR and marketing and on fundraising were led by four of the District's Volunteer Field Reps (Past National President Lou Molitor, National Treasurer Jim Ruzon, Region 3 Vice President Scot Warren and NEC Foundation President Dennis Koch), along with Division 3 Director Janet Jacobs from Naperville and Division 11 Director Jason Koch from Belleville.
The free education session is held annually in Bloomington with plans to hold it in November in 2016 - mark your calendars now!
