This Friday
basketball-basket.jpg It is Round-Ball season and we will have both High School Basketball coaches with us Friday. Kevin Meyer makes the transition to the Boy's team this year at QND and Andy Douglas enters season number two as the head coach of QHS. It's another good meeting to bring a guest. Might even feature the news!

We all learned about the 7 Habits Initiative with Dr. George Meyer and Camp Point Elementary School Principal Eric Stotts as our speakers. The 7 Habits concept was the brainchild of Dr. Stephen Richards Covey an American educator, author, businessman, and keynote speaker. His most popular book was The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. The concept was adapted for students and it has been highly successful. Dr. Meyer has been involved with the teaching of this concept for ten years. The seven habits was first introduced to Quincy in 1988 in an attempt to help kids who were falling through the cracks. They have teamed up with The United Way of Adams County to supplement the funding needed to instruct not only the students but also the teachers. What they found were success stories and a change in the culture of the schools involved (Pre-K thru Junior High).

Principal Stotts relayed success stories for kids as young as 4 who are fully capable of talking to large groups of people comfortably. These young people actually have put together action plans in kindergarten and act as greeters at the school doors each day. The success of the program is documented and surveys returned from parents of students wholeheartedly recommend what the school is doing in the education of their child (over 80%).
There will be a speaker to talk about the 7 Habits initiative during the newly re-instituted Quincy Conference on January 4th. The conference is predominantly for educators, but the public is invited at a cost of $30 per person. Thanks to Jim Benz for his introductions.

Youth of the Month
Madison Kim

Also, the Youth of the Month award was presented to Madison Kim, a senior at Quincy Senior High School. Madison is ranked #2 in her class of 501 with a GPA of 4.5263. She is involved in numerous activities including the National Honor Society, Beta Club, Orchestra and is the Captain of the QHS Tennis team. She has worked in food pantries, supported CASA and has traveled to Guatemala to help build a school there. Madison's Mom, Suzan Kim and her sister, Molly, were on hand to witness Madison receive her award. Thank you goes to John Johannes for chairing this event and to Mike Llewellyn for his introduction of Madison.

This 'n That

Jared Haugh began the meeting with a prayer. It was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by a Mike McLaughlin "I".

Jared informed the Club of the unfortunate news of the cancellation of the Avenue of Lights event. Basically it came down to the lack of availability of the guards to watch the prisoners who we were dependent upon for the erection of all of the displays.

Perry Terwelp addressed the Club about the Special Olympics Basketball Tournament on December 6th. Steve Green is assisting and he went around asking to see who might be able to help that day. There will be three shifts available to work if you can. Please see Perry or Steve to sign up.

Dennis Koch, the National President of the Exchange Club Foundation, informed the Club of the Foundation's basis in fighting child abuse. The Foundation supports 72 centers around the country that are used in the fight against child abuse. The national goal is $375,000 which is 25% higher than last year. Each member will be getting, if not already, a request to donate letter. Please look at it and make a donation. Per Dennis, if all 19-thousand Exchangites around the country would donate just $20 they would meet their goal. Since Dennis is the Foundation President, we need to make a good showing with donations to this cause. Please open your check book and help out.

Brian Koch handled the 50-50 Card Draw flawlessly after he dropped the entire deck of cards on the floor to start things. The winning drawer was none other than "Mr. Lucky" himself, Rick Veihl. Rick turned into "Mr. Unlucky" when he drew a 7 of Clubs so the pot grows for next week.

Bruce Broemmel handled the Tail-Twisting chores and told a Donald Trump-Queen Elizabeth "blame it on the horses" story. You had to be there. Good one Bruce!

A special thanks to all of the Club members who helped with the set-up, greeting and tear-down of the Field of Honor. Big thanks to Art Awerkamp and his committee for their fine work with this project. Mother Nature did manage to damage our tent but the 1,000 flags made it thru the wind storm.

Special guest with us last Friday was Emily Robbearts, the Executive Director of the United Way.

Our thoughts and prayers continue for two long time members of our club who are struggling with their health. Prayers also go out to Mel Dillman who continues his struggles at Blessing Hospital and also to Kevin O'Donnell who is back working but is also struggling health-wise. It was good to see Dick Wentura, who was recently hospitalized, back with us this Friday.

Line of the Week

The line goes to Bruce Broemmel. Once announced as the winner, our Youth of the Month, Madison Kim, realized that she was not as tall as the podium when she approached it. Somewhat indecisive as to what to do, Bruce Broemmel verbally came to her rescue with the line
- "I know the feeling, Madison."

Exchange Minute

Exchange Strong Annual Campaign

As mentioned in the This and That article to the left, NEC Foundation President Dennis Koch, a member of our club, made a presentation on the National Exchange Club Foundation's annual fund raising campaign at Friday's meeting.
You should have received some information in the mail this past week from the NEC Foundation, including a pledge card for the campaign. Before you give it a toss, please take a little time to read the information that is included. In it, you'll find out what your foundation does with the contributions they receive.
Of course, the largest part of the Foundation's budget goes to our National Project - child abuse prevention. Since taking on that project in 1979, Exchange Club Child Abuse Centers have assisted more than 700,000 families and helped 1.75 million children have better lives. Much progress has been made in the area of child abuse prevention - with the annual rate of reported cases dropping by more than 1/2 - but an average of 5 children each day die in this country from abuse and neglect. Our work is far from over!
The NEC Foundation provides direct support to our CAP centers in the form of training, materials and supplies. This is also available to agencies that are affiliated with our CAP program, so agencies here in Quincy have the same opportunity to benefit if they would just become an affiliate.
The Foundation is so much more than child abuse prevention. Each year, the NECF funds the two $10,000 scholarships and provides funding to bring the recipients and their families to convention in order to receive their award. If funs are available, a second ACE (think Bud Willer Award) will be added next year. Members can designate an amount that will be used exclusively for the scholarship program.
The NEC Foundation also provides funding for Americanism brochures that are available free to any club through the Exchange Marketplace.
We know that a majority of our clubs and members like to keep their money local and ask why they should support the national organization. It's a legitimate question. The mission of the National Exchange Club is to make our communities better places to live. By supporting your national foundation, we can make all of Exchange stronger and that benefits every community - including ours!
Please consider a contribution to the NEC Foundation - any size contribution is welcome. If your employer does matching contributions, please let the NECF know - they will be happy to handle the paperwork to make your contribution go even farther.
