Don't Forget - Field of Honor Set-up Today at 1 p.m. at the Vets Home!

This Friday
Our speaker this week will be George Meyer who will enlighten us on the Seven Habits Initiative Program. I would love to be able to tell you what it is all about but I don't even know the 1st initiative. I guess we will all find out together. We will also have another Youth of the Month presentation as well.

We held our annual Veteran's Day program during our noon meeting. In advance of the big Veteran's Day Parade Saturday and our Field of Honor event this week our speaker was Mr. Glenn Swick who spoke about the upcoming Tri-State Warrior Run to be held at the Veteran's Home this Saturday. This run benefits the Tri-State Warrior Outreach. The Tri-State Warrior Outreach is a local volunteer organization that has been responding to unmet needs requests from area veterans since 2012. They work with the Adams County United Way to coordinate with the local VA office and in effect are acting as a Veterans Assistance Commission since Adams County does not have one in place. The most difficult challenge is finding Veterans who need the help since they never ask for any. Usually it is a family member who contacts them for assistance. The Tri-State Warrior Outreach has used their money to build wheel chair ramps, build a new bathroom floor, and provide rental and medical cost assistance for Veterans..

Dennis Koch provided the Club with an update on the Veterans Matter program as well. With 50-thousand Veterans homeless in this country, this program tries to put and keep Vets in their homes. The VA will assist with rental fees but not for deposits for those rental properties. The Veteran's Matter funds are used for that purpose among others. Donations for this program will be accepted at a 7 pm program tomorrow (Wednesday) night at the Field of Honor location. Please plan on attending.

Rick Gengenbacher saluted all of the Veterans who are in our Club and invited the Club members to attend the Veteran's Day ceremony at 10am at Lippencott Hall at the Illinois Veteran's Home. Jeff Dorsey will MC that event.

Art Awerkamp addressed the gathering to update everyone on the Field of Honor and Flags of Honor programs. In attendance were 10 to 12 major sponsors who Art thanked for being a vital part of the project. Thanks to those who signed up to set up, to host and to take down this display this week. So far, according to Art there are 133 people signed up to be a part of the Flags of Honor program. Art also thanked the QHS Football team for their help in setting up and taking down the flags for this project during the year. A special thanks went out to Steve Green's son, Eric Green, for helping to build the three flag holding stands for storage and mobility.

This 'n That

Jared Haugh handled the Veterans themed prayer with his usual grace and flair.

Rick Gengenbacher began the Pledge of Allegiance with a casual "I" to start things off.

President Jared Haugh held a second reading for potential member Taylor Rakers. With all in approval, he could become a member as soon as next week. He is being sponsored by Kent Anderson.

Charlie Ledbetter announced that December 4th will be the night for the Give a Kid a Chance Dinner and meeting with Santa. This year the program will grow by an additional 100 plus people as it is being combined with the DCFS families as well. It looks like overtime for Santa is coming up.

A special thanks to the Club members who showed up to carry the huge American Flag down Maine Street for the Veteran's Parade last Saturday. Great to see the big C-130 Hercules aircraft fly overhead.

And look for an announcement shortly regarding the Avenue of Lights.

Our thoughts and prayers go to Chuck Venvertloh who lost his father Ted after a long illness. Prayers also go out to Mel Dillman who continues his fight at Blessing Hospital and also to Kevin O'Donnell who is back home after a recent stay at Blessing as well. Last, but not least, Dick Wentura was hospitalized for a procedure done and is hopeful of being back with us this Friday.

Line of the Week

The lines belong to Art Awerkamp who, during the introductions of the major sponsors for the Field of Honor Project, said

 - "These are in no particular order. First is County Market".

He also mentioned how his sister Lucinda called to tell him how nice her flag looked set up her neighbor's yard (by mistake).

Exchange Minute

New members

We are always looking to bring new members into the Quincy's Finest Hour gang. It's always good to have a reminder now and again, though, on the procedure for bringing in a new prospect.

Any club member is welcome to bring a prospective new member to a club meeting and have one lunch on the club. The sponsoring member should then fill out an application for the new member and submit it to either Cullan or Jared. You can get the application here. Jared will then bring the member proposal up at the next board meeting (regular or special) for board approval.

We do ask that you refrain from bringing your prospective member back to a club member until after the member has been read a first and second time. While we've never not approved a member, it can be a little uncomfortable voting on someone if they are present.

When you are recruiting new members for the Club, keep in mind that we are looking for members who are willing to work - whether it's Macker or any of our other projects and fund raisers, there is more to the Quincy Exchange Club than just showing up on Friday for the meal and fun.

All that being said, welcome to  our new members and don't let that part about riding the goat for initiation worry you!
