This Friday
Another very special meeting is on tap this Friday as the Quincy Exchange Club will present the Firefighter of the Year Award. Chief Joe Henning of the Quincy Fire Department and Chief Rick Zaerr of the Tri-Township Fire Department will make the presentation to a local firefighter. For the young kid in us, there will also be a fire fighting display in front of the Stoney Creek Inn for us to look at.
Friday Last

The Exchange Club got the opportunity to take the grand tour of the Quincy University's newly renovated football facility. The stadium received a multi-million dollar facelift and vaguely resembles the old stadium. No more bleacher splinters and loose concrete steps. New features include a huge electronic scoreboard, an artificial surfaced field, locker rooms on site, larger concession stand and a brand new four story press box with suites. Plans are to build a football building with weight rooms in the area where the parking lot is on Sycamore Street. Thanks to Athletic Director Marty Bell for providing the grand tour. The Q.U. Hawks next home game is Saturday when they host Ohio Dominican at 1:00 pm in a non-conference game. In a first for this area, the QU-Truman State football game will be televised on KHQA-TV on October 31st.

Youth of the Month
Jaden Sangoi

We also featured the October Youth of the Month Award. This month's winner was Jaden Sangoi of Quincy Notre Dame High School. Jaden, a senior at QND, is the son of Denise and Anand Sangoi. Jaden has a grade point average of 4.02 and very impressive composite score of 33 on the ACT exam. Jaden is also the Captain of the Cross-Country team at QND and is also a Boy Scout working on getting his Eagle Scout badge. Jaden has consistently gone over and above in compiling service hours as well. His plans are to attendHarvard, Notre Dame or Stanford University. QND Principal Mark McDowell provided the introduction of Jaden. Special thanks to John Johannes for chairing this wonderful event which the Club has been doing now for 30 years. This 'n That

John Spring, basking in the day's sunlight, initiated the program with our opening prayer.

Carlos Fernandez, sounding like a guy without a microphone, belted out a thunderous "I" to start the Pledge of Allegiance.

There was no Tail-Twister or card draw held last week.
President Jared Haugh, with the opening comment of "Insult yourselves this week", updated everyone on Avenue of Lights project. Jared asked for help this week during the day if possible. Work is also being done every Tuesday and Thursday night from 6 to 7 at Wavering Pool area. This is easy remove labels from lights and wrap lights on small mounts kind of work. It is nothing real strenuous. Only 6 weeks left to make it happen. We need your help.

Art Awerkamp updated us on the Field of Honor project. Some dates to keep in mind are November 10 at 1pm to help set up the flags and November 13th to help take them down.

Just a reminder that we will be needing about 15 members to help us carry the huge American Flag in the Veteran's Day Parade on Saturday, November 7th. You will be needed between 9:30 and 11 that morning. That parade will feature a C-130 flyover as well.
We had one guest and it was Taylor Rakers of Farmer's State Bank. He is a potential member and was the guest of Kent Anderson.

Mel Dillman is still hospitalized and struggling to fight off an illness. He is in Blessing Hospital and putting up a good fight. Visitors are welcomed to help him get over the hump.

Please keep Bruce Broemmel in your thoughts as his youngest brother Gregory is in grave condition in Michigan. Thoughts and prayers go out to Bruce and Gregory during this very tough time.

This serves as a reminder that whenever something is happening with you and your family please let me know as I would be more than willing to share the good and the bad with others. Remember, we are all Exchangites and sometimes we need each other more than other times, but we are here for each other... all the time.

Veterans Matter

Previously, there has been a piece on Veterans Matter in this space. Now that the Flags of Honor program is getting nearer, it's time to take a little closer look at that program.

The mission of Veterans Matter is simple - House as many unhoused veterans as we can, as fast as we can, while preventing more from becoming unhoused.

As of October 12, 793 veterans in 110 cities in 8 states have been assisted by the organization. A number of celebrities ranging in genres from Willie Nelson and Darius Rucker to ZZ Top and Stevie Nicks, Katy Perry to Ice-T and Gary Sinise to Susan Sarandon have joined the cause.

The Quincy Exchange Club will participate in the 11/11@7 rally during the Flags of Honor display at the Illinois Veterans Home. During this rally, which will occur at the Exchange Club tent in front of the display, we will accept donations that will be forwarded to Veterans Matter for use in housing homeless veterans in Illinois. Partnering with the National Exchange Club, Veterans Matter hopes to house 2,000 veterans over the next year.

So how does this work? The VA has an exceptional program called HUD-VASH. The Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) social workers find the veteran and veteran families with children in their cars, on the streets and in the shelters. They help the veterans find their own apartment and then HUD-VASH pays the LONG-TERM rent until they can get back on their feet. The only thing stopping them is the deposit, which Veterans Matter pays directly to the landlord, allowing them to cross the threshold right then and sleep under their own roof that night.

The national average deposit is $750 - that varies by state. For example, the average in Washington DC is $1,400 while it is $500 in Indiana. Our goal is raise $3,000, or enough to make 4 average deposits. All of the costs of operating Veteran Matter are underwritten, so 100% of the monies donated go to the program. Since starting in 2012, Veterans Matter has a 100% success rate of getting veterans housed and a 92% rate of keeping them housed long-term.

It's a worthy cause and fits in completely with our mission of helping kids and Vets. Mark your calendars now and plan on coning out to the Flags of Honor field on November 11 at 7 p.m.

Speaking of Flags of Honor, Chairman Art Awerkamp has announced the set-up and take-down dates and times for the 1,000 Field of flags. We will set up the flags at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, November 10 and take them down on Friday, November 13 at 3 p.m. Last year we had about 20 members helping with set up and take down and we got the job done in about an hour to an hour and a half. Please take a little time on one or both of those days to help out. We will also need some help in four hour shifts watching the field and answering questions - Art will have sign-up sheets beginning this week. We'll provide the heat, coffee and hot chocolate - we just need you!
