This Friday
With renovations almost complete, the Exchange Club will take to the road this Friday and visit the refurbished Q.U. Stadium. Quincy University Athletic Director, Marty Bell, will take us on a tour of the facility which received a multi-million dollar facelift. This would be a wonderful time to invite a prospective member to be your guest.
Friday Last

Our speaker was Lt. Col. Susan P. Asher. Colonel Asher spoke about the satellite program she was involved with in the Air Force. It was just declassified in 2011 so Col. Asher took the opportunity to fill us in on what was known as the Corona Project that began in 1960. Basically it was a satellite program the country used to spy on the Soviets. After Gary Powers was shot down taking pictures in his U-2 aircraft, the United States went to satellite to take those pictures. The pictures were basically film that would be jettisoned back to earth and secured by naval ships at sea and then flown to the Kodak Company in Rochester, New York for development. In 1961 the National Reconnaissance Organization (NRO) was formed with a mission of design, develop, launch and operate all military satellites. Everything was covertly done to prevent the Soviets from finding out. In 1971 the Hexicon program began which featured the capability of the satellite to hold more film (some 50 miles of it). It also took larger framed photos as well. Colonel Asher worked with all of these programs and now is retired after a 24 year career in the United States Air Force. Thanks to Chuck Venvertloh for his introduction.

This 'n That

Eric Schultz presented the prayer with 1.7 seconds of notice and did a fine job.

Our speaker Lt. Colonel Susan Asher was asked to begin the Pledge of Allegiance and did so with a very militaristic "I".

The Tail-Twister duties belonged to Jeff Dorsey who fleeced the flock and also presented a joke involving a golden saxophone and a urinal. You had to be there.

President Jared Haugh, fresh from a coffee spill all over himself at McDonalds, held a first reading for prospective member Todd Moore. Todd is being sponsored by Eric Barnes. We are all invited for coffee next month when McDonald's becomes McHaugh's. Two golden arches will be replaced with two golden coffins.

Jared also mentioned things are going well with the Avenue of Lights project and thanked those who have stepped up to help out in the preparation of the event. Only 7 weeks left to make it happen. We need your help.

Perry Terwelp, who is handling the Special Olympics' Basketball Tournament, announced the 16 team tournament will be held on December 6th. Hy-Vee, thanks to Steve Labs, will be providing the food for the event and Pepsi will be helping out as well. We will be needing referees for the event so please contact Steve Green if interested.

The Card Draw was held by Cory Watson and like Yogi Berra so eloquently stated "it's like de'ja' vu all over again" as Rick Veihl once again had the correct ticket but drew a 6 of Hearts. On behalf of the entire Club, I would like to thank Rick for thinning out the deck for the rest of us.

Thanks to the Wis-Pak team of bowlers and their team Captain Perry Terwelp who represented the Exchange Club team at the recent bowling fundraiser to fight Autism.. The bowlers includedBrandon Mayfield, Rick Gee, Alex Hudelson, Matt Harris, Joe Long and Brandon Mayfield.

Thoughts go out to Mel Dillman who is still hospitalized with an illness. He is in Blessing Hospital and visitors are welcomed.

Thoughts go out to Bruce Broemmel who is in Michigan to be with his ailing brother as well.

It was really good to see Kirk Frageman back with us last Friday.

Exchange Education

NEC National Leadership Summit
Each year over the past half-century, the National Exchange Club brings in all of the District Presidents-elect for training. The 51st National Leadership Summit will be held in Detroit From October 20-25. In addition to the training, both the National Board and NEC Foundation Board will meet and new members of the Court of Honor will be inducted at the National Headquarters in Toledo.
The names of the five new honorees will be inscribed on one of the granite pylons located in the courtyard of our national headquarters.
Training will involve 30 district presidents-elect and 11 regional vice presidents and will range from basic information on putting together the district leadership team and the role of district directors to reviewing the reasons that the districts exist. As with any training, the attendees get out of it what they put into it, and each DP will meet with incoming National president Elizabeth Grantham and Executive VP Tracey Edwards to start planning their administrative year.
Training is available, not only for new district presidents, but also for club officers and directors in the late fall and spring. The Lincolnland District will be holding their Mid-Year Leadership Conference on Saturday, December 12 in Normal. The event, which will be held at the Chateau (The old Jumers) off of Veterans Parkway, is open to all Exchange members and is free. Officers and Directors are encouraged to attend, but many members interested in making Exchange a better organization attend the conference each year. Contact Joel or Dennis for more details.
