This Friday
Joel Box has spent the majority of his life chasing his dream of being a professional basketball player. Now the former Quincy University and John Wood star is spending time helping others try and achieve their goals. A native of Rockford, Illinois, Box plays professionally overseas in Oman, a small Middle Eastern country that neighbors Saudi Arabia and was once held in Iraq for 12 days before being allowed to leave. Should be a great program to invite a guest or prospective member to Quincy's finest hour!

Mayor and Exchangite Kyle Moore took the time to address the club on the Quincy Promise, a four-year pilot program to promote post-secondary education for graduates of Quincy's high schools. Modeled after the Peoria Promise, the program has been funded to the tune of $250,000 by private industry and individual contributions in hopes of keeping more of our children in the Gem City once they have completed their education and to create a better-educated workforce here in town.

The City of Quincy, John Wood Community College and the Community Foundation have partnered to make this project come together. The program promises to be the "last dollar" grant for students up to the full amount of tuition for as long as three years or 64 credit hours. High school seniors need to apply for the program by February 1st each year and the amount of scholarship is dependent on how long they have attended school in Quincy. More information on the details of the program on the JWCC website. Thanks to State Rep Randy Frese for the introduction.

This 'n That

President Jared led the club in prayer with Randy Frese delivering a strong "Aye" to begin the pledge. (Must of thought he was still in Springfield)

Sonny Christner handled the tail twisting duties this week - coming down especially hard on those members who haven't taken the time to come out to the park and help with Avenue of Lights. Speaking of our newest project, if you have a little time during the day, we could use some help, mainly to observe how this thing goes together, out at Wavering Park. The committee is also looking for help on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Just come on out to the Wavering Aquatic Center and they'll show you what to do.

The aforementioned Sonny had a story that involved a vasectomy and kids, but you really needed to be there to get the full value.

After Dennis Koch's dismal showing with the card drawer last week, brother Brian was back to run it properly this week. Starting over at $200 - Sonny Christner has the right number, but drew the 3 Spades - the pot stays at $200 next week.

Congratulations to Haley Haugh. Our President's daughter has been medalist in her last two golf tournaments representing QND. We're happy to report that Haley is fine after being involved in traffic accident following the QND football game Friday evening near the QND campus. She obviously got her driving skills from her father.

No guests this week, but welcome back to several members that had been absent for a while - we're glad you came!

Line of the Week

The best line of the week goes to our Prez, who, before introducing the mayor quipped

 - "Chief Copley wanted to be here, but he's a little short-handed"

Exchange Education

National Headquarters
Toledo is home to the 2nd Exchange Club (Detroit being the first). In 1917, when Exchange was chartered as a national organization, Toledo was a bigger community than Detroit, so the club's offices were established there. For many years, the Club operated out of rented space. As the organization grew, it was determined that a more permanent headquarters was needed.

In the mid-fifties, land was acquired at the corner of 31st and Central Avenue and work began on the new building on March 27, 1956 - the 45th anniversary of the very first club. On July 2, 1957, the National Exchange Club building - built by Exchangites for Exchangites - was dedicated.
The building is U-shaped with a beautiful courtyard in the middle, which hosts the Court of Honor. A cast-aluminum statue entitled "Birth of the Atomic Age" by noted sculptor Marshall Fredericks dominated the center of the courtyard.
The building houses all of the operations of the National Exchange Club and NEC Foundation and is open Monday-Friday, except holidays. If you are ever in the Toledo area, stop by - the staff is always glad to have Exchangites stop by for a tour of the building!
