This Friday
This Friday the entire meeting will be devoted to Avenue of Lights. This project will be a huge money maker for the Club that will involve some time but basically little effort. The idea of Friday's meeting is to make sure all members are aware of what has already taken place and what needs to be done in the next 11 weeks.
Friday Last

Rob Miller, our Character Champions speaker, was our guest. He talked about "Proactive Coaching". The Character Champions has been a wonderful program used to enhance sportsmanship and character in youth athletes in our area. Rob, a former college coach and resident of Liberty, Missouri, is originally from Michigan. His talks all week for Character Champions have dealt with a variety of issues to help young student athletes to improve their character both on and off the field. He talked a lot about leadership and how it is based upon establishing relationships with fellow players. He also mentioned that great teams are not those with great records, but are teams where all of the players involved gave their best even if it ended with a losing record. The leaders of great teams help teammates to help lead other people. They try to get young people to reach their potential. According to Miller, having potential is one thing. Reaching their potential is another. Prior to his discussion with the Club, Dick Wentura presented an impromptu testimonial about the Character Champions program and strongly suggested more club members be a part of it in the future. Thanks to Jim Benz, the organizer of the Character Champions program, for his introduction of Mr. Miller. Jim also thanked Mike Elbe of John Wood Community College for allowing the JWCC campus to be the site for the Character Champions presentations last week.

Birthdays and Anniversaries

Every Tuesday and Thursday - Avenue of Lights 6:30 to 7:30 at Bob Scott's workshop

One of those rare weeks when there are no birthdays or anniversaries in the club

9/24 - Board meeting at the Pier - 11:45 a.m. - members are welcome to attend (Please note the change in date)

This 'n That

President Jared Haugh delivered a stirring prayer with his content dealing with the 14th anniversary of 9-11.

Rich Howell, celebrating his 83rd birthday, delivered an extremely firm "I" at the level of a 50 year old man to initiate the Pledge of Allegiance. What vitamins is he taking?

Rich took quite a ribbing from President Haugh regarding his 83 years on the planet. The President's one-liners were assisted by an inquisitive group question of "How old is he?"

The Big Dog got the call to be the Tail-Twister but was asked not to do so by President Haugh who had a one o'clock tee-time. It didn't stop him though as he grabbed the bucket and collected the first and only dollar of the day from President Haugh.

Just a reminder, that the next board meeting will be held at the Pier Restaurant on September 24th, which is a week later than usual. Everyone is welcomed to attend the board meetings with lunch costing $10.

The Card Draw was held by Brian Koch. The pot last Friday was at $200. Kent Anderson had the correct ticket but drew a 9 of Clubs. So there will be 50 cards left in the deck (including the joker).

Rich Lavery addressed a specially called board meeting Friday to present to the Club a request to sponsor the Special Olympics Basketball tournament on December 5 or 6th. The issue will be voted on at the board meeting on September 24th. Perry Terwelp will chair the event.

Special guests at the meeting included newly approved member Paul Koscielski, Jr. and David Penn. Both were guests of Jared Haugh.

It was also good to see Zeke Cernea and Jacob Huff with us as well.

Fundraising
Never a favorite of anyone, fundraising is the life-blood of any non-profit organization. When one thinks of the good works that our club does - all of the projects, programs and contributions that we do - it's all made possible by the money we raise. The more needs that we want to address in making Quincy a better place to live, the more funds we need to raise. The needs are great. We currently budget in the area of $35 thousand a year through our special projects fund, and we could easily double that with the needs that are brought to the club.
Macker has been our main-stay fundraiser for 25 years and currently brings in around $20K per year, thanks in large part to the hard of work of Steve Green and Perry Terwelp. The Flags program is gaining momentum and we will be soliciting sponsors again this year to finish with the start-up costs for the program, as well as providing some money for the Veterans Matter program.
This week, we'll hear more about our best opportunity to raise funds since the Laverys brought Macker to us all those years ago. The opportunity is there for our club to raise $50-$70k per year from the Avenue of Lights project. So come take a listen this week as President Jared takes us through what we'll need to do to make this a success!
