This week's guest is Emily Robbearts the new Director of the Adams County United Way. Emily will update us this year's United Way Campaign. This would be another good meeting to bring a guest.
Friday Last

Quincy Public School District Board President Sayeed Ali was our speaker this Friday. The school district is underway with the 2015 school year, construction projects and a search for a permanent school superintendent. They may have an announcement on a new Superintendent in a few weeks. Recently the Board was updated on the district's $89 million construction program. The $16 million Quincy High School project is on schedule and on budget. Temporary walls partitioning off construction areas have been erected and grading has begun for a northeast parking lot.

Also, last month a major announcement was made regarding a site for a new K-5 elementary school. ADM Alliance Nutrition gifted the school district with 20 acres located on Locust Street from approximately 34th to 30th street to build the school. This ADM corporate gift to Quincy Public Schools was a significant and appreciated donation. The school on the ADM site will be one of five new state-of-the art elementary schools being built to replace aging and outdated buildings.

One of the main goals of the Board is to incorporate more parental involvement for students of all grades according to Ali.

Thanks to Jared Haugh for his introduction which included mention of his tax bill which shows 63% of his taxes going to School District #172.

This 'n That

Brian Koch got the shock of his life when the meeting started with a request of him to present the opening prayer. It started out fine but ended abruptly. President Haugh has assured your humble reporter that he will no longer use the 'surprise' approach when asking someone to do the prayer beginning this week. Jared was afraid no one would come to the meetings anymore and if they did they wouldn't "sit up front".

John Spring began the Pledge of Allegiance with a mediocre "I" which was enhanced by the membership to its conclusion.

Bruce Broemmel handled the Tail-Twisting duties which included a joke about clocks and a ceiling fan all while he was walking around the room. I guess we will call it an "action" joke. Yes, Bruce can do two things at once.

President Haugh asked and received approval on a second reading from the members on two applicants for membership. One is Brad Peek, sponsored by Rick Veihl and the other is Paul Koscielski, Jr., sponsored by Jared Haugh. With the approval, it's time to bring them into the Club.

We had two guests with us last Friday. Jeremy Crossen, who is helping us with Avenue of Lights, was a guest of Chad Argabright and Todd Moore was the guest of Eric Barnes. Both are prospective members.

It was great to see Mel Dillman return to the Club after a summer long absence due to health problems. Mel was in his usual rare form too!

Jeff Dorsey wowed the Club members with a tremendous version of "The News" and then he woke up from his nap. The actual presentation actually caused Mel Dillman to "stand up" out of his wheelchair in an attempt to walk out and leave. I guess it wasn't good.

The Character Champions event is coming up in September. We need several to help stuff bags this Thursday at 5pm at the John Wood Community College Cafeteria. We also could use some help serving lunch during the event on September 8th and 9th.

The next event for our Flags of Honor program is Labor Day on September 7th.with the main event being the "Field of Honor" to be held November 10th thru the 13th. Please mark your calendars to plan on helping with set up and tear down in November.

The Avenue of Lights project continues with just 13 weeks before opening day on Thanksgiving night. Each week a group meets for one hour on Tuesday and Thursday nights to replace some of the bulbs on displays. They meet Tuesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 under the direction of Rick Veihl and Thursdays under the direction of Jared Haugh at Bob Scott's workshop located behind Scotties Fun Spot and just east of the Quincy Raceways track.

The Card Draw was held by Brian Koch with help from brother Dennis. With the pot at $200 and 52 cards in the deck, Steve Labs had the winner ticket but drew a 3 of Hearts.

Former member Russ Goehl will turn 80 on Saturday and there will be an open house to honor Russ at the K of C from 4 to 9 pm Saturday. In lieu of gifts, the family is requesting that you jot down some of your favorite memories you have shared with him and bring it with you. The family is putting together a book of memories for Russ.

Exchange Education

Child Abuse Prevention
You know that the Prevention of Child Abuse is our National Project - the project was approved at the National Convention held in St. Louis in 1979. But how does Exchange help prevent child abuse?

Locally, we financially support organizations such as the Advocacy Network for Children, Transitions and Cornerstone. These organizations not only deal with the aftermath of child abuse and neglect, but also have programs in place to help families prevent child abuse from occurring in the first place.

Nationally, Exchange has a network of about 70 Child Abuse Preventive or CAP Centers - two of which are located in Illinois. The Illinois Centers are located in Naperville and Joliet and derive some of their support from the local Exchange Clubs in those communities. The National Exchange Club and the NEC Foundation provide support for the CAP Centers in the form of training, materials and resources. For more than 30 years, A CAP Symposium has been held in conjunction with the National Convention - this year, more than 60 centers were represented at the Symposium.

Through the years, Exchange CAP Centers have assisted nearly 700,000 families, creating safer homes for 1.75 million children. The evidence-based Exchange Parent Aide model is a family home-visitation model. Parent Aides are trained, professionally supervised individuals (paid and volunteer) who provide supportive and educational, in-home services to families at-risk of child abuse and neglect. Exchange Parent Aides act as mentors and provide intensive support, information, and modeling of effective parenting -- all in the home of the family.

Even though the number of children abused and neglected has been dropping - a 23,000 decrease from 2009 to 2013 according to HHS, 1,530 children died in 2013 as a result of child abuse and neglect - about 5 per day! We still have a lot of work to do.
