This Friday
Quincy Public School District Board Member Sayeed Ali will be our speaker this Friday. The school district is underway with the 2015 school year and there is plenty to talk about with construction projects underway, and a search for a permanent school superintendent going on. A good program to bring a prospective member with you Friday.
Friday Last

We had the pleasure of hearing head Football Coach Rick Little of the Quincy Senior High Blue Devils and head Football Coach Bill Connell of the Quincy Notre Dame Raiders. The Blue Devils will open the season on Friday on the road at Edwardsville. Their home opener is against Alton on September 4th. The Raiders will open the season at home against Rockford Lutheran High School this Friday and host Marquette Catholic in week two before taking to the road in the third week of the season. For the first time in years, the two Quincy high schools will play each other in the final week of the season on October 23rd at Flinn Stadium. Next year they will play each other at QND. A big thank you goes out to KHQA's Chris Duerr for handling the coach's introductions. Both programs assist us in our events during the year with the Raiders helping with Gus Macker and the Blue Devils with our Flags of Honor program.

This 'n That

A very surprised Art Awerkamp was asked to present the prayer on "zero" notice. Without any prep time he handled it with several comments directed toward him at its conclusion. Let's just say, all Catholic priests should sleep well, the up and comer is not a threat.

Sheriff Brent Fischer began the pledge in a way that would make Andy Griffith proud. The rest of the "Mayberry" clan joined in to help.

President Haugh also handed out "empty" sleeves of golf balls to last week's golf winners. Dennis Koch got a woman's' shirt for winning the "Hits like a Girl award". Steve Green won again and captured the "longest putt" award. Brian Koch won the award for the "Most Lost Balls". Rich Zeidler got the "Thanks for Not Playing" award. Dick Wentura got the "Tear up the Course" award and Rich Howell won the "Take it Like a Man" award after being struck in the leg by an errant shot from Dennis Koch. Seriously, thanks to Jared for organizing the event at Spring Lake Country Club.

President Haugh asked for a reading from the members on two applicants for membership. One is Brad Peek, sponsored by Rick Veihl and the other is Paul Koscielski, Jr., sponsored by Jared Haugh.

President Haugh asked for some volunteers to assist with the Character Champions event in September. We need several to help stuff bags on September 3rd at 5pm and then to serve lunch during the event on September 8th and 9th.

Don't forget to talk up our Flags of Honor program. The next event for that is Labor Day on September 7th.with the main event being the "Field of Honor" to be held November 10th thru the 13th. Please mark your calendars to plan on helping with set up and tear down in November.

Sonny Christner fleeced the flock as our Tail-Twister. He told a few jokes along the way as well, including a comment about the annual rings sitting at his own table.

The Avenue of Lights project is underway. Each week a group meets for one hour on Tuesday and Thursday nights to replace some of the bulbs on displays. They meet Tuesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 under the direction of Rick Veihl and Thursdays under the direction of Jared Haugh at Bob Scott's workshop located behind Scotties Fun Spot and just east of the Quincy Raceways track. Eventually this work will be shifting to the park.

The Card Draw was held by Brian Koch. With the pot at $200 and 53 cards in the deck, Joel Koch had the opportunity to become a "rich" man but he drew the 6 of Spades.

Only one guest and that was Nick Neuser, the nephew of Rich and Mike Lavery. Nick is a former QND football player.

Congratulations to Kyle Awerkamp as it was revealed thru "Stork Broadcasting" via our President that Kyle and his bride are going to bring yet another Awerkamp into the world.

Prayers go out to the Koch Family as Dennis and Brian's Mom and Joel's grandmother is having some heath issues.

Flags of Honor
Following the club meeting on Friday, Flags Chair, Art Awerkamp held a short committee meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to set dates for this year's Flags of Honor program at the Illinois Veteran's Home. With Veteran's Day falling in the middle of the week, it was determined that the flags will be set up on Tuesday, November 10 and taken down after the meeting on Friday, November 13. We're in the process of securing the permits and licenses needed for the event.

We'll again be looking for sponsors for the event - we'll need to replace some of the flags to keep them looking great - as well as providing funding for some of our Americanism projects. There will be more on that in the coming weeks.

The committee did approve participating in a national event as part of the Flags of Honor program - the Veterans Matter Rally and Walk - on 11/11 @ 7 p.m. The rally and walk (think Memory Walk for Alzheimer's) will take pace on the grounds of the Vets Home. Any money that we raise for the Rally will be used exclusively for housing homeless veterans in Illinois. As the details of the project come together, we'll keep everyone posted.

Character Champions
Coming up in just a few short weeks, The Character Champions program has become the go-to seminar for area high school and junior high school athletic teams for sportsmanship and character on and off of the field of competition. This year's speaker, Rob Miller of Proactive Coaching, brings his life's experiences to each presentation he makes. Through short stories he connects the audience to his sportsmanship message and the power of the coach to influence their student-athletes. His belief and passion for this important message come through loud and clear.
Rob will also be our program speaker on September 11. A four-sport athlete himself, Rob has a masters degree in sports administration from Michigan State and has served in a number of coaching and administrative positions, including serving as the former Director of the Character of Champions Program of the NAIA.
