This Friday
Bill LaTour will join us as the topic will be "Identity Theft". It is a problem for all of us and will be a great program this Friday to invite a prospective member to attend. Make an effort to bring someone to Friday's meeting!
Friday Last

Our speakers were Dennis Williams and Mike Nobis of Teen REACH, an organization to help students primarily after school has dismissed. The U.S. Census Bureau says half of 16 and 17 years olds are "at-risk" of not graduating high school and turning to crime. But now Quincy's Teen REACH program hopes to reduce that number significantly and help put more kids on the right track. Dozens of Quincy kids go to the Teen REACH center after school for help with their homework and just to have a safe place to go. The Quincy Public Schools also transport these students to the center which is located at 811 Payson in the old Irving School Building. Recently, the Adams County Health Department and Quincy Christian School teamed up to assist Teen REACH. Williams said the Health Department provides health education to kids and assists with implementing grant money. Meanwhile, the Quincy Christian school students help serve as mentors with the program. The Teen REACH program is administered through the non-profit Two Rivers Council, which provides services to Adams, Brown, Pike and Schuyler counties in Illinois. Williams, who was recruited to manage the program based on his own personal struggles and his ability to overcome them, started with the Teen REACH program nine years ago. Nobis is on the Board of Directors and is hands on involved in the lives of these kids as well on a daily basis. During the school year, it operates five days a week for students ages 11-17. What they need is the time of volunteers to work with these kids who just want someone (primarily male) to look up to for guidance. Thanks to Chuck Venvertloh for handling the introduction.

This 'n That

Mike Lavery presented the opening prayer externally for all to hear. Internally, everyone was praying for the Ace of Spades (more on that later).

It was Jim Lierly's turn to begin The Pledge of Allegiance and, on cue, he chose the right letter in selecting "I" (his odds were 1 in 26 and he got it right) with the Club assisting thereafter.

President Haugh captured a very poignant moment on video as the Club all recorded a very "pleasant" group greeting for Mel Dillman who is rehabbing now at Memorial Hospital in Springfield. Mel is in room 317 and his phone number is 779-9849. Hopefully, he will return to our meetings soon. Especially after he sees how much he has been missed.

President Haugh again reminded everyone of our annual golf outing at Spring Lake on August 14th after our meeting which will be held at Spring lake Country Club. Signup sheets were on the tables at a cost of $50 per player.

Jared also presented Barry Cheyne his membership certificate. It took some 6 months for him to get it. Boy, that must have been some background check?

Signup sheets for the Avenue of Lights prep work were on the tables last week. We are just looking for about an hour of your time to replace some of the bulbs on displays, we meet Tuesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 under the direction of Rick Veihl and Thursdays under the direction of Jared Haugh at Bob Scott's workshop located behind Scotties Fun Spot and just east of the Quincy Raceways track.

With 48 cards drawn, it had to happen and it did Friday as Steve Green selected the Ace of Spades to win the pot worth $2,125. This great card draw fundraiser was the brainchild of Mike Lavery and originally carried out by Art Awerkamp for those who were unaware. Congratulations Steve. Thanks again to Brian Koch for handling the 50-50 Card Draw. Look for a sitting room only crowd this Friday.

Steve Peters fleeced the flock last Friday as the Tail-Twister which featured a story about giving up smoking, drinking and sex. You had to be there.

Best wishes also goes out to former member and uncle of our President, Pat Haugh who underwent surgery in St. Louis last week.

Only one guest last Friday and it was attorney Todd Eyler, who was the guest of Gary Farha.

Exchange Education

Last week, Dennis and Joel Koch attended the National Convention in beautiful downtown Columbus, Ohio. It was a very productive week, with a few bylaw amendments passed, new officers and directors elected - including Elizabeth Grantham from South Carolina as the next National President - and the announcement of a new partnership that may be of interest here in river city.
The National Exchange Club has partnered with Veterans Matter - an organization that helps house homeless veterans. To date, the organization has provided housing for more than 700 vets in 11 states, and has received support from actors, actresses and musicians ranging from Gene Hackman to Gary Sinise to ZZ Tops' Dusty Hill. There will be more information forthcoming for the board meeting, but there is an upcoming event that would tie in nicely with our Field of Honor on Veteran's Day. Veterans Matter has a 100% success rate housing homeless veterans in the VA's Long-Term Supportive Housing Program and a 91% success rate in keeping them housed. This sounds like a program that is right up our ally!
On the fun side of things, the Lincolnland District won the coveted "Best Hospitality Suite" award this year! Special Thanks to Lou and Patti Molitor for designing a "Clue" game that had everyone asking for more clues and to Joel "the Bartender" Koch and his brother Jason who kept the food coming. Pulled pork sliders, a special "Pink Panther Punch" and margaritas were on the menu. It was a fun time and had hundreds of folks through the room over three nights. Jimmy Johnson (no, the other one) won the prize basket.
On the Foundation side of the equation, Dennis Koch was re-elected president o the NEC Foundation, which raised nearly $100,000 during the week. We're off to a fantastic start to the new year!
