This Friday
This Friday we get to hear about the Teen Reach program in Quincy. Mike Nobis and Dennis Williams will be our guests as they provide the details of what this wonderful program is all about. Good meeting to bring a prospective member as your guest!
Friday Last

Last week we got the game plan on the Quincy Gems as owners Terry Martin and Jimmy Louthen presented their lineups to the membership. The Gems have struggled on the field this season, but it is still a great family outing every night that they play at Q.U. Stadium. Terry Martin mentioned that they have had to deal with rainy weather all season long which has kept their projected attendance down somewhat. They have had as many as 2,300 fans on one occasion, but have been averaging 600 to 700 fans per game. The Gems added a "Kids Zone" this year and will construct new bathroom facilities in time for next season. When asked about the costs of operation, Martin relayed that the team pays some $150 per uniform, $5,000 for baseballs and $4,000 for bats to give us an idea. The Exchange Club also was invited to attend last Friday night's game as well with free tickets provided by the Gems.

This 'n That

Jim Benz provided the opening prayer which included a mention of Donald Trump and an Elvin Townsend phone ringing.

The Pledge of Allegiance was begun by Sonny Christner who caught the Club off guard as he began without a pause after the "I".

President Haugh reminded everyone of our annual golf outing at Spring Lake on August 14th after our meeting which will be held at Spring lake Country Club. Signup sheets were on the tables at a cost of $50 per player.

Ace of Spades The 50-50 card draw pot climbed to $2,000 as everyone watched with anticipation as Dick Wentura, who bought enough tickets to wallpaper his bathroom, selected the 9 of Spades. This after it took Dick what seemed to be 10 minutes to determine if he had the winning ticket. That's what happens when you buy 3,000 tickets. Dick has purchased $3,000 worth of tickets to win $2,000. I went to public school and that doesn't seem like a good deal to me. Thanks to Brian Koch for handling the drawing which next week will feature just 7 cards and one of them is the winning Ace of Spades card.

Rick Gengenbacher took care of the Tail-Twisting duties which included a very long story/joke involving the Big Dog. None of it was true but since when has the truth stopped anyone.

The update from Curt Moore on Mel Dillman is that he will be leaving the rehab center in St. Louis this week and heading either to Springfield or Quincy to rehab there after knee surgery. Get well Mel, we miss and need your wit.

We had one guest last Friday as Rick Veihl brought co-worker Brad Peek to the meeting. Brad is a prospective member.

Line of the Week

The line belongs to Skip Rueter who, after listening for a lengthy period of time to Tail-Twister Rick Gengenbacher's story, interrupted Rick complaining

 - "How Long is this story?" He then got up and said "I can't wait, I'm gonna wet my pants".

Exchange Education

This week, the National Exchange Club is meeting in Columbus, Ohio at the 97th National Convention and 32nd Child Abuse Prevention Symposium. During the week, the NEC Foundation Board and the National Board of Directors will meet, members will elect a new National President-Elect, National Treasurer and 6 Regional Vice Presidents as well as a Trustee to the Foundation Board. In addition, members will vote on a number of amendments to the Club's bylaws.
There will be several national speakers and we'll recognize the National Youth of the Year and ACE Award winners. A large number of clubs and individual members will be recognized for their contributions to Exchange over the past year.
Most important of all, though will be the fun and fellowship that 600 or so participants will have in the hospitality rooms. It's a great time to renew friendships with Exchangites across the country or just to meet new friends. Next year's convention is in Houston - why not plan on joining us next year?
