This Friday
This week we get an update on the Quincy Gems baseball team. Terry Martin and Jimmy Louthen, the owners, will join us. There are still a few weeks of the season ahead and the Club is planning an outing at the game this Friday night as well. Great week to bring in a prospective member!
Friday Last

Adams County Emergency Management Director John Simon was our speaker and we were glad to be able to get him after the terrible storm that raked through Quincy. According to Simon, his office time is usually spent with preparation of potential disasters for the area but last week it dealt with the actual implementation of those plans. His office is the liaison for Federal, State and Local organizations during crisis mode which the city and country were in. Simon mentioned that the major damage from the storm was actually set up by the weeks of rainfall the area had received. Once the storm went through, he had to deal with 60 gas leaks and over 21,800 power connections that needed repair. With the help of some 1400 Ameren and Adams Electrical personnel the city saw power returned to nearly 100% of area in four days. City and county crews also helped clear all streets in Quincy and the county in that time period as well. Simon also mentioned the help his agency received from IDOT, Illinois Department of Corrections, The Quincy Park District, Macomb, Hannibal, Camp Point, Adams County and Brown County. His office is also organizing a "volunteer army" of people to assist the elderly and disabled in removing debris from their properties. Simon mentioned that the National Weather Service personnel said there was no tornado and that the damage inflicted on the area was from straight line winds only. Thanks goes out to Chuck Venvertloh for securing John Simon as our speaker on short notice and to Rick Gengenbacher for his introduction.

This 'n That

The very first prayer under the Jared Haugh administration was performed by Carlos Fernandez.

The pledge was initiated by Dick Wentura who utilized his own "straight line wind" to say the word "I".

President Haugh mentioned an Exchange Club night at the Gems game this Friday and also a golf outing at Spring Lake the following week. More details "fore"-coming.

With all kinds of anticipation from the membership the 50-50 card draw was conducted thanks to the efforts of Brian Koch. With the pot at $1,900 and 8 cards in the deck, Rick Veihl, becoming a real card drawer, drew a Queen of Diamonds. That sent the membership into a thunderous roar of approval for Rick's loss. We have everybody's back except when $1,900 is involved. Down to 7 cards this Friday. A dead Skunk could be our speaker and we will still have a great crowd this Friday.

Bruce Broemmel handled the tail-twisting duties which included a Hillary Clinton joke about being on an island. You will have to ask him to tell it to you if you missed it.

With our speaker delayed by a noon news conference elsewhere, the Big Dog was pressed in to service to present "The News" on very short notice....and it showed. If nothing else, it did fill time for our speaker to arrive.

The update on Mel Dillman is that he is still in a rehab facility recovering from knee surgery in St. Louis. It is hoped that Mel will return to Quincy by the end of this month. He would love to pass the time of day with a conversation from you. If you would like to call Mel and wish him well, call 779-9849.

Line of the Week

The Line of the Week goes to Jared Haugh, who received some "85" books from the National Exchange Club Office with one of them being "How to Run a Successful Club". Jared then said,

 - "I don't want to run a successful club, I want to run this one".

Exchange Education

As we begin the 70th year of the Exchange Club of Quincy, it's time to take a look at what it means to be an Exchangite and our affiliation with the national Exchange Club.
The mission of the National Exchange Club is simple - Inspiring communities to become better places to live. Each club is unique and independent to determine how best to make their community a better place, but all of the 700 or so clubs have one thing in common - Unity for Service. It's more than just a motto, it's a way of doing things and it's the way we've been doing things for a very time.
Through Exchange's four Programs of Service - Americanism, Youth Activities, Community Service and our National Project - the Prevention of Child Abuse - we set our own agenda. Over the years, we've developed some pretty good programs, started others and dropped still more as times and needs of the community have changed. We do the same thing with fundraisers (some of our fundraisers can also make our community better, but they are still primarily designed to raise money to pay for our other activities). Over the years, we've done everything from selling books and plants to various raffle tickets to Gus Macker, chain saw carvings, BBQ, Flags and now the Avenue of Lights.
It's always important to keep an eye on what we're doing to see if it's still relevant or if there are better opportunities available - always striving to making Quincy a better place to live, work, play and raise a family.
