This Friday

It was Thomas Jefferson who composed the original draft of the Declaration of Independence which Congress would edit to produce the final version. The Declaration ultimately declared our independence from Great Britain, more than a year after the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War. That wasn't the only declaration in that document. If you really read the fine print it says "The Quincy Exchange Club shall not assemble on July 3 in the year of two thousand and fifteen. And they shall reconvene on July 10 when they shall install a new President before the assembled membership. And that President shall be Sir Jared Haugh. The assembled shall witness his swearing in ceremony beginning at 12:15 p.m." Boys these guys were good!

The Quincy Exchange Club hosted the 89th Annual District Convention. The event actually began with a golf outing at Camp Point (as Spring Lake was closed due to soggy conditions) followed by a dinner at Spring Lake.

Friday the motivational luncheon was held at noon at Stoney Creek Inn with Dennis Koch as the Master of Ceremonies. That event featured nationally recognized humorist Bobbe White who is from Quincy. Bobbe entertained the crowd with humor, laughter and stretching exercises. Bobbe is the author of several books including "Life in the Laugh Lane". She left everyone with 17 words that will never fail you and they are: Act, Accept, Believe, Care, Change, Choose, Focus, Forgive, Listen, Prepare, Pray, Persist, Relax, Resist, Smile, Trust, and Wait. Bobbe also has a website of www.trylaughter.com.

The Conventioneers also got the rare opportunity to hear the Big Dog present "The News". They were almost the only people to hear it as many local Exchangites decided to depart the room just as "The News" was to begin. One by one they returned. They couldn't resist hearing it. Names were taken and payback is forthcoming.

The rest of the convention featured business sessions, a hog roast at the Villa Kathrine featuring music of Cheeks McGee, a Saturday "One Nation Under God" breakfast, historic tours and an evening awards banquet.

The convention came to a close with the Sunday morning breakfast featuring the announcement of the Youth of the Year and ACE Award winners.

A huge thank you goes out to everyone involved with putting this year's convention on with huge kudos to Dennis Koch and his family who worked their tails off to make it a huge success.

The Club also received a proclamation from State Representative Randy Frese in honor of our hosting the District Convention in Quincy.

This & That

Dick Meyers and lovely wife Rosalee (from the Exchange Club of Mattoon) handled the opening prayer and pledge with Dick tying in the Club motto as well.

Dennis Koch acknowledged several ranking members of the Lincolnland District who were with us and also asked for our continued thoughts for Jared Haugh's family who were dealing with the loss of Jared's grandmother and his uncle Pat (a former member) who is recovering from a recent hospital stay.

Dennis also mentioned that Mel Dillman has been moved from Barnes Hospital in St. Louis to a nearby St.Louis rehab center following knee surgery. Hopefully, Mel will be back with us on July 10.

Obviously, there was no tail-twisting or card draw done last week. The next card draw will be July 10 with the pot over $1,700 and 9 cards plus a joker in the deck
