This Friday

We learn all about the Avenue of Lights event as John Groves and Bob Scott join us with all the details. Some 12 to 15 thousand vehicles annually make their way through all of the displays. John and Bob have handled this project since 1999 and are ready to turn it over to the Exchange Club.

With Flag Day last Sunday, we held our annual "Proudly We Hail" program. Six different individuals received honors for flying their American Flag in a proper and patriotic way. In addition two active duty Army Cadets at West Point were recipients of a special letter, a certificate and an actual flag flown over our nation's Capital with special thanks to the staff of the Illinois 18th Congressional District. '

Lt. Blaine C. Brown, son of Jason and Stephanie Brown was one recipient. The other cadet was Lt. Seth A. Pinkston, the son of Reno and Sandy Pinkston. Lt. Brown's flag was accepted by Herb Wellman, area military academy recruiter and Lt.Pinkston's flag was accepted by his father, Reno Pinkston, as neither recipient was available to be with us.

The six flag flying honorees all received a plaque from the Club. The plaques were presented to: Carol Rischar, for displaying flags in yards along 24th Street and Maine Street annually. To Sayan Taylor, for an impressive display at her residence at 1217 Curtis Creek in Quincy. To Jim Thompson, on behalf of Adams Electric Cooperative, for a display at their business in Camp Point. To Ed & Linda Holthaus, for a display at their residence at 4631 Harrison in Quincy. To Dr. Robert Reich, for a display at the Animal Medical Clinic of Quincy at 2803 Wisman Lane and to Mike Klingner, for a display of the flag at Klingner & Associates at 616 North 24th Street in Quincy.

All of the recipients spoke as to why they fly the flag and what it means to them to do so. Each recipient was recommended by Club members so if you see a display that is worthy, please contact Dennis Koch for next year's presentations. Thanks to Dennis for chairing this event

This & That

It was Jared Haugh week last week as Jared presented the Prayer, the Pledge, The Card Draw and he also Tail-Twisted.

Albeit a small gathering for both the picnic as well as the Flag Day Concert last Wednesday at Madison Park, Art Awerkamp did take the opportunity to promote our Flags of Honor to the crowd prior to the concert's start. The Club members in attendance then handed out the small hand held flags to the concert goers.at 6pm. Thanks to the Butcher Block for the food and to Gengenbacher Shaved Ice.

Don't forget to check the Club's directory on our website www.quincyexchangeclub.org to update any information that is incorrect. Contact Joel Koch if you need to update anything.

It is not too late to contact Jared Haugh, who is chairing the golf outing during the District Convention with the tee-off date of June 25 at Spring Lake Country Club. Golf includes a dinner afterwards. The cost is just $75 so get your foursomes to Chairman Jared Haugh. We would love to see quite a few golfers there to kick off the convention.

Don't forget the District Convention is Thursday thru Sunday, June 25 thru June 28. The cost to Quincy members is a reduced rate of only $85. You can also pick and choose individual events to attend at a reduced rate. Check the Lincolnland website at www.lincolnlandexchange.org for the registration form and details or contact Dennis Koch.

Thoughts and prayers go out to Mel Dillman for a speedy recovery. Mel was hospitalized with acute pain in his knee and missed the meeting.

In true Exchangite fashion, Mel was still able to contact President Curt and ask him to purchase a ticket(s) for the card draw. As luck would have it, Mel had the right ticket (purchased by Curt) but Curt drew a 5 of Hearts. Hope he has better luck with his recovery and is back with us Friday. So the 50-50 Card Draw is now down to 10 cards plus a Joker.

Don't forget the National Exchange Club's Mega Raffle. Tickets are $100. Go to www.exchangeraffle.com to purchase your tickets!

Exchange Education

As we close in on President Curt Moore's final couple of weeks, it's time to reflect on our accomplishments over the past year.

The Exchange Club of Quincy has once again earned the National Service Award and will be recognized at the National Convention in Columbus, Ohio. In doing so, here are some of the service projects that we have completed this past year -

Americanism:

Between the Dogwood parade and the Flag Day concert and a few other events, we distributed nearly 7,000 flags. We also held our first Field of Honor with 1,000 flags at the Veteran's Home and kicked off the Flags of Honor program on Memorial Day and Flag Day. We were also credited with two Get Out the Vote events and recognized six individuals and businesses with Proudly We Hail plaques.

Child Abuse Prevention:

With the help of HyVee, we conducted our annual Blue Ribbon campaign this past month. Last December, we hosted all of the foster children and their families for Christmas dinner and a visit from Santa, and Time-Out Teddy made the rounds at several local events.

Youth Program:

We recognized 6 QHS and QND students with the Youth of the Month program and awarded $1,000 scholarships to our Youth of the Year, Bud Willer ACE award and Character Champion recipients. Speaking of Character Champions, we recognized about a dozen area junior high and senior high school athletes for their character and sportsmanship during the fall and winter sport seasons and held another successful Character Champions seminar. We also hosted the annual Quincy Arts recognition luncheon and held our annual Hearing Impaired Christmas program.

Community Service:

We recognized our Firefighter of the Year, Law Officer of the Year, Citizen of the Year and Book of Golden Deeds recipients, matched elementary school students from St Dominic's with adopted grandparents at the Illinois Veterans Home each month and hosted the Mayor's State of the City address.

Fund Raising:

Hosted the 25th annual Gus Macker tournament, put on the last Smoke on the River BBQ contest and raised money through the flags program and Blue Ribbon Campaign. Looking ahead, we took up the challenge of taking over the Avenue of Lights program and have already looking towards this winter.

All in all, that adds up to about 36 service projects. Not a bad year Curt!
