Club Meets at Noon each Friday at Stoney Creek Inn, 3809 Broadway in Quincy
2012-2013 Lincolnland District Exchange Clubs Best Bulletin Award Winner
This Friday

Michelle Wilkerson will be our speaker. Michelle owns Yoga7even as well as Grown-N-Gathered organic food store in Quincy. This young entrepreneur has quite a story to tell us and it should be interesting. We'll also have a visit from Lincolnland District president Bill VanKeuren and his wife Madeline from the Mattoon, Illinois club. Why not bring a prospective member as your guest Friday?

Friday Last

Every year the Quincy Exchange Club presents the Golden Deeds Award to a dedicated volunteer who gives endless hours of their time and talents toward making our community a better place to live. That award was presented last Friday to Phil Conover.

Conover, a 30 member of the Quincy Exchange Club and former Exchangite of the Year, has served the community as a teacher, coach, administrator, broadcaster and counselor, and he has been a member of numerous boards and organizations, including the Great River Economic Development Foundation, Blessing Hospital, Quincy University, Quincy Area Chamber of Commerce, John Wood Community College Workforce Development Program and the Quincy Notre Dame Foundation.

Phil Conover was born in Quincy and grew up in the Loraine/Mendon area. He is married to Bonnie Schafer Conover and has just celebrated 50 years of marriage. He and Bonnie have three children... Eric, Marc and Anne. Bonnie and Eric were in attendance along with Phil's brother Leigh and his wife Jane as well as his other brother Joe and his wife Janet.

Conover was nominated with the help of the Herald Whig, who graciously ran articles asking for nominations. The community got to nominate deserving persons for the award. All of the nominating letters were reviewed by our Golden Deeds Award committee, who chose Phil Conover as the most deserving nominee this year. The nominating letters were placed in the "Book of Golden Deeds" and presented to Conover at the noon banquet held at the Stoney Creek Inn in Quincy.

The Book of Golden Deeds is the National Exchange Club's longest running project, dating back to the first award, sponsored by the Exchange Club of Huntington, Indiana in 1919. Friday's presentation by the Quincy Exchange Club made Conover the 63rd recipient of the prestigious award.

A special thanks to Gary Peters who served as Master of Ceremonies and to Jared Haugh for being the Keynote Speaker. Both did so with their usual humor. Thanks also goes out to Cullan Duke (or is it Duke Cullen?) for chairing the event along with members Rick Gengenbacher, David Adam, Gary Farha and Art Awerkamp.

VIP Dates

5/17 - Dan Selby celebrates his 58th birthday
5/21 - Board Meeting - 11:45 at the Pier
5/22-24 - 25th Annual Gus Macker Tournament
6/25-28 - Lincolnland District Convention

This & That

The Invocation and Benediction were delivered By Reverend Gayle Pope of Christ Lutheran Church, the church that our Golden Deeds winner attends.

The Pledge of Allegiance was begun by Mel Dillman who, with a choice of 26 letters, chose the correct letter by saying "I".

As the pot grows beyond $1,250 and the deck of cards continues to diminish, the 50-50 card draw awaits a potential big winner Friday. Again, for new members, if you draw the Ace of Spades you win the entire pot. If you draw a joker, you get $5 and get to draw again. You can't win unless you buy a ticket(s) to start with. If your ticket is drawn, you get the opportunity. Some will dispute this, but the more tickets you buy the better chance you have to draw a card. I suspect the ticket sales will escalate this Friday meaning the pot will as well. Good luck.

Lenny Biallas made the Kentucky Derby payouts to all of the winners from last Saturday's race. Thanks Lenny for handling this.

Please set aside a few hours Sunday morning beginning at 8am as we will be taping courts for Gus Macker. This is a great opportunity for those of you who can't be in town for Gus Macker to at least help with the preparation for the event. The plan is to be done by 10am pending the amount of help that shows up at 5th and Maine.

Special guest with us last Friday included Whitney Williams of WGEM-TV and Mathew Rector of KHQA-TV. Also in attendance were past Golden Deeds winners and some of their families and friends.

Let us not forget that this Saturday marks the sixth year that our Club has been without the services of John Tripp. That my friends is hard to believe.

Don't forget the National Exchange Club's Mega Raffle. Tickets are $100. Go to www.exchangeraffle.com to purchase your tickets!

It's Macker Time!
Time to step up and be counted gentlemen! For the 25th year, we'll take over the District and converting it to Mackertown. As usual, all hands are needed, beginning this Sunday, with the annual taping of the courts. Be at Washington Park at 8 a.m. to assist Kirk Fraggeman and his crew. With many hands, it doesn't take long to get all of the red and yellow courts taped!
Then beginning Friday, May 22, there are many opportunities to help out. Right after the meeting, from 1:30 to 7 p.m., we'll need help in the registration tent - see Dennis Koch. The big rush in Registration, though comes Saturday morning! we'll have anywhere from 60-75% of the teams trying to register between 7 and 8:30 a.m. - so please plan on giving us an hour or two Saturday morning - more if you can!
Steve is still looking for help with score keeping Saturday and Sunday as well. If you haven't signed up for anything else, this is an area that just about anyone can do. Bring your chair and take in the games. See Steve if you can work Saturday, Sunday or both days.
John Johannes and Dave Poland are also looking for help in Brackets. In short, there is a job for everyone Macker weekend and everyone should have a job to make the weekend a success!
