American Pharoah wins the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby

Dr. Lenny Biallas enlightened us on the history of the Kentucky Derby. Lenny explained that a horse is considered a one year old foal from when it is born through January 1st. According to Lenny, there is an average of 3,700 thoroughbred horses born every year. The horses that are entered in the Kentucky Derby earn their way in to the race from the points that they accumulate prior to the race at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. After his explanation of the race sheets for club members, three races were shown. Members who bought a ticket were paid if their particular horse won one or all of the races shown. Lenny also conducted a pool for the race held last Friday and we shall see who the winners were this Friday from last Saturday's race. Thanks to Lenny for sharing his expertize, to Eric Thomas for providing videos of the races shown and to John Spring for selling tickets to club members as well.

Newest Man of Action
Barry Cheyne
Barry (Center) with his sponsors, Carlos and Steve

The Club inducted Barry Cheyne ("Chain") to become our latest member. Barry is a retired USAF Lt. Colonel and is currently a Police and Fire Commissioner for the City of Quincy. Barry is married to Jeanne Grist Cheyne and has two sons. He is an avid golfer and works part time at Westview Golf Course. (should not have said that, Rich Howell will want free golf now) Barry is also involved in many other organizations in the area. Barry was inducted in a ceremony conducted by Gary Peters and Jeff Dorsey. He will be a wonderful addition to our Club. Please make him feel welcomed when you see him in the weeks ahead.

This & That

Jim Benz was the deliverer of God's word to get the meeting started. That was followed by Doug Greenwell providing the "I' to begin the Pledge of Allegiance with grace and eloquence (that's what I was told...I didn't hear him).

Brian Koch updated those involved with last Saturday's Dogwood/ Quincy's 175 Celebration security detail at the street concerts. Brian thanked those who signed up to work.

Steve Green provided an update on Gus Macker which is less than one month away. Court sponsorships are still needed so please contact your business people on your list. Steve mentioned we have 111 teams signed up which is ahead of last year at this time.

Doug Greenwell asked for help in the Macker Hospitality Tent. Contact Doug if you can assist him.

John Johannes, pinch hitting for Dave Poland, reminded people he could still use some help to pass out flags for the Dogwood Parade held Saturday.

Thanks to Mike Llewellyn for wearing the Mr. Macker outfit in the Dogwood Parade. Thanks to Dick Wentura for driving to Springfield to pick up the uniform for Mike to wear.

Dennis Koch passed out copies of the very first Exchangite (1946) for people to look out. Copies were placed on the tables along with the Exchange Club roster form 1946. If you have any Club memorabilia please contact Dennis.

Jeff Dorsey presented the news which received its usual amount of audience grumbling from an audience that knows to laugh for they may be a part of the next edition of The News if they don't.

Brian Koch conducted the 50-50 card draw with a huge pot awaiting the person who draws the Ace of Spades. It was beginners luck when newly inducted Barry Cheyne had the correct ticket but he drew a 9 of Clubs. So the pot goes to over $1,250. Don't believe we will hold a drawing this Friday. (We wouldn't want Phil Conover to know we bet in our Club)

Don't forget the National Exchange Club's Mega Raffle. Tickets are $100 and if you buy early you will be in the Early Bird drawing worth $1,000. This year's early bird drawing will be held on May 8th. Go to www.exchangeraffle.com to purchase your tickets!

Line of the Week

Belongs to Lenny Biallas who, while reading off the race sheet, said that horse #6 is an Irish horse called "Mubtaahij". Come on Lenny! I might believe that is true if they put an O or a Mc in front of the name. "Mubtaahij" is as Irish as it gets guys!

The Book of Golden Deeds and Give-a-kid-a-flag-to-wave

The Book of Golden Deeds is the National Exchange Club's longest running project, dating back to the first award, sponsored by the Exchange Club of Huntington, IN in 1919. Locally, this week's presentation to Phil Conover will be the Quincy club's 63rd.

Volunteering is the soul of the Exchange Club's principles and this award recognizes dedicated volunteers who give endless hours of their time and talents toward making our community a better place to live.

With the help of the Herald Whig, who has graciously run articles asking for nominations for a number of years now, we ask the community to nominate a deserving person for the award. All of the nominating letters are reviewed by our Golden Deeds Award committee, who chooses the most deserving nominee each year. The nominating letters are then placed in the "Book of Golden Deeds" and presented to our recipient.

Up until 1990, the Golden Deeds banquet was a large gathering on a Sunday evening with club members and their spouses or girlfriends (but not both) and all of our past recipients invited to attend. As the number of attendees began to dwindle for an evening banquet, though, the board made the decision in 1991 to make the banquet part of our Friday noon programs. Since then, we've invited all of our past recipients to join us for a Friday noon meal.

This past Saturday, another National Project - this one started by the Exchange Club of Galesburg - was carried on by the Club. Give-a-kid-a-flag-to-wave was a huge success with the great weather and huge turnout for the Dogwood parade. Nearly 7,000 flags were distributed to "kids of all ages" along the parade route. With the help of a number of Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts from the Mississippi Valley Council, we led off the parade with our big American Flag, with Dick Wentura carrying the supply of flags in the back of his classic pickup truck. This year we were joined by the Gus Macker Man (worn by Mike Llewellyn) and Time Out Teddy (worn by Joel Koch). Both were big hits with the kids in the crowd. Thanks to all of the club members and their families who helped!
