Club Meets at Noon each Friday at Stoney Creek Inn, 3809 Broadway in Quincy
2012-2013 Lincolnland District Exchange Clubs Best Bulletin Award Winner
This Friday

We will be off and running this Friday as Lenny Biallas will be holding our very own Kentucky Derby contest. Lenny will talk about the Derby's history and show a few races along the way. To get in on the betting fun, bring $5 for the real Derby contest and a buck each for the three races we will show at the meeting. I got $2 on Mr. Ed to Show. Bring a guest or, better yet, a prospective member for Quincy's finest hour!

Friday Last

Our guest last week was William Stuflick, The Dean of Career, Technical & Health Education at John Wood Community College. Mr. Stuflick, a former Engineer Technician for the U.S. Air Force, just recently joined JWCC after working for a Southeast Iowa academic institution as well as for the Iowa Department of Transportation. Mt. Stuflick discussed the concern in the area for the availability of people to be in the workforce not only now but in the future. With our population declining and the high school population also on the downward slide, there is a real concern for having enough people to work the needed jobs in the future. In an effort to keep young people in the area, JWCC is offering "dual" enrollment for high school students. They can take courses in high school that will give them college credits while they are still in high school. This is an effort for JWCC to hopefully convince students to take those credits and continue their education at JWCC to get either their Associate's degree or to get a certificate degree. Our thanks to Chuck Venvertloh for his introduction and to Eric Thomas for assisting with the power point presentation.

Bud Willer A.C.E. Award
Andrew Genenbacher
L to R - Ted, Sarah and Andrew Genenbacher, Mike Llewellyn and Danielle Edgar

We also held the Annual Bud Willer ACE Award presentation last Friday with Andrew Genenbacher being this year's recipient. Andrew, of Quincy Senior High School, has overcome learning disabilities, accepted challenges and has become a hard worker at QHS and is well deserving of the award. His parents, Sarah and Ted Genenbacher, were in attendance along with his councilor, Mike Llewellyn and Principal Danielle Edgar. Andrew, who volunteers for the Central Adams Fire Department, wants to become a firefighter once he leaves the United States Army. Andrew will join the Army Reserves in June. Thanks to Art Awerkamp and Mike Llewellyn for the Bud Willer introduction.

This & That

With the room surrounded by "Star Wars" collectables (to be a part of another activity at the hotel) Jared Haugh found a way to incorporate a "may the force be with you" into our prayer.

That was followed by a forced "I" from Dave Poland who, along with everyone else at his table, had a deer in headlights look after being given zero notice to present the Pledge of Allegiance by our Club president.

President Curt Moore offered a second reading for a new applicant in Barry Cheyne. With no opposition we hope to bring him in next week. His sponsor is Steve Green.

Steve Green updated us on Gus Macker and continues to need scorekeepers. So far we have 30 teams which is ahead of last year's pace at this time.

Vic Welper announced that we have 17 confirmed court sponsors. Please ask the business community out there to be a court sponsor. The cost is $300.

The Golden Deeds Committee made their decision on this year's recipient and it is former member Phil Conover. The Golden Deeds Awards luncheon is set for May 8th.

Dave Poland asked for more volunteers to assist with passing out American Flags during the Dogwood Festival Parade on May 2nd.

Brian Koch had more signup sheets on tables for people to assist with the City of Quincy's 175th Celebration on May 2. We need people to man the entrances and exits for the concerts on the street that day and night. There are two shifts, early and late. Contact Brian to help. If we get 15 signups the Club will receive $40 per person for our coffers.

Brian conducted the 50-50 card-draw and Cory Watson got the chance to win the pot of $1,217. Cory drew a 4 of Spades to the delight of all who bought a ticket. The pot escalates even higher next week.

Art Awerkamp briefly thanked those who helped to canvass an area of Hampshire to York and 24th to 18th Streets to solicit flag rentals for our Field of Honor project.

A reminder, future President Jared Haugh will be holding the annual President's Planning Meeting at Dennis Koch's office at 6:30pm this Thursday, April 30. Everyone is welcomed

Don't forget the National Exchange Club's Mega Raffle. Tickets are $100 and if you buy early you will be in the Early Bird drawing worth $1,000. This year's early bird drawing will be held on May 8th. Go to www.exchangeraffle.com to purchase your tickets!

The Bud Willer Accepting the Challenge of Excellence Award

James "Bud" Willer played football at Quincy High School in the late 20's, then went on to play at the University of Iowa. After returning to Quincy, Bud began his career at the Illinois Department of Rehabilitation. Bud was a charter member of the Exchange Club of Quincy and served as president in 1947.

In the early 1970's, after seeing the hard work that his students were putting in to overcome their handicaps and adversities in order to graduate from high school, Bud proposed an award to recognize those students' successes. That award became known as the Bud Willer award. Years later, the National Exchange Club began awarding a similar award known as the Accepting the Challenge of Excellence Award or A.C.E. Award. In the mid-2000's, after looking at the criteria for ACE Award and our Bud Willer Award, the club determined that their were enough similarities between the two that our recipient would meet the qualifications for the ACE. Since that time, the award has become known locally as the Bud Willer ACE Award.

The award recognizes a student who has overcome some adversity in their life in order to graduate with their class. The adversity could be a physical or mental handicap that set their education back, or it could be a life adversity - homelessness, drug or alcohol dependency or an abusive home situation to name a few - that was overcome by the student to turn their life around and become a productive citizen.

The winner of our award receives a nice plaque and a $1,000 scholarship and becomes eligible for the Lincolnland District ACE Award, which consists of a $2,500 scholarship. The District ACE recipients are then eligible for the National ACE Award, which includes a trip to the National Convention and a $10,000 scholarship.
