2012-2013 Lincolnland District Exchange Clubs Best Bulletin Award Winner
This Friday

Our guest this week is William Stuflick, The Dean of Career, Technical & Health Education. Mr. Stuflick was with us on April 10th but due to time constraints was unable to address our club. We thank him for his understanding of the situation and appreciate his availability this Friday. We will also announce our Bud Willer A.C.E. Award winner as well on Friday so please invite a guest to join you for "Quincy's Finest Hour"

Friday Last

Lenny B

We were all set for baseball (talk) when they called and the tarp had to be placed on the Club last Friday, Both coaches unexpectantly had to cancel being with us. So we did what any great Club would do and that is have a good time with each other and at each other's expense. Lenny Biallas was kind enough to step up to the plate and pinch hit for Brigham John, the head baseball coach at Quincy Senior High School and Chris Martin, the head baseball coach of Quincy Notre Dame High School. Lenny hit safely with several stories of his many adventures of travel around the world. He moved around the bases verbally and said that he has touched 80 different plates in 80 different countries in his lifetime. He's played in Paris, London and Jerusalem while your meager cub reporter has seen some limited action in Nebo, Basco and Marblehead. (What gives?) Lenny's stories equal a home run compared to my hit by pitch stories that I could tell so it was a good decision to have him fill time on the mound until the bullpen was ready. Despite the bullpen activity, Lenny played the role of closer for the meeting and told one last story.

Youth of the Year
Madison Cowman
L to R - Danielle Edgar, Madison Cowman and Jessica Beaston

Prior to Lenny's appearance, the 29th annual Youth of the Year Award was presented to Madison Cowman. Madison was recently awarded the YWCA Future Woman of the Year Impact Award as well.

Friday's meeting marked the third time in several months that Madison has been with us having been selected a Youth of the Month, a winner of the Character Champions Award and now the honor of being the Youth of the Year. Madison wins a $1,000 scholarship from the Quincy Exchange Club and is the Club's representative in the District competition. In attendance with Madison was her father Bob Cowman, Quincy Senior High School Principal Danielle Edgar, Councilors Jessica Beaston and Mike Llewellyn. Special thanks to Lenny Biallas for the introduction and to John Johannes for his chairing this wonderful Youth of the Month series this school year.

This & That

Jim Benz, recognizing the latest honor Flight, delivered the prayer followed by Skip Rueter who began a plural version of the Pledge of Allegiance with the word "We". (messed everybody up...some even followed with "wish you a Merry Christmas")

John Johannes subbing for Dave Poland reminded the Club that we have some 8000 flags to pass out at the Dogwood Parade on May 2nd. Please plan on assisting him that Saturday.

Steve Green talked about Macker and asked members to step up and become scorekeepers. With Macker being a month or so away signups are underway for teams at a cost of $144 per team..

Remember to sell your Gus Macker court sponsorships as well. We need everyone to help sell these $300 court sponsorships.

The Exchange Club will be a part of the City of Quincy's 175th Anniversary celebration. The Club will handle the security at the gates of the day long concerts on Maine Street on May 2nd. Signup sheets were on tables last week and will be again this Friday. We will need 15 people to work one of the two shifts that day. The pay from the celebration committee is $40 per person so the Club stands to earn $1,200 for doing so. If interested, contact Brian Koch.

Dennis Koch reminded everyone of the National Exchange Club's Mega Raffle. Tickets are $100 and if you buy early you will be in the Early Bird drawing worth $1,000. Last year Doug Greenwell won some big bucks from this event. Go to www.exchangeraffle.com.

Dennis also updated us on the District Convention coming up June 25 thru 28 (but not everybody heard it). The cost to our Club members is just $85 to attend although there is no cost for members for our usual Friday meeting on June 26. Dennis left convention pamphlets on the tables last Friday.

President Curt Moore held a first reading for Barry Chaney to become a new member. Barry spoke to us weeks ago and apparently liked us so much he wants to be a part of us. He is sponsored by Steve Green.

Curt also read two thank you notes from Special Olympics-Illinois and the John Wood Community College Foundation.

Bruce Broemmel handled the tail-twisting duties and told and Atheist and animal poop joke. Had to be there.

Here are the winners of a couple of pools that were held recently. Cory Watson captured first place and Doug Greenwell second place in the NCAA Basketball pool conducted by Jared Haugh. In the Master's Golf pool, conducted by Gary Peters, non-members Roy Riddle and Jim Grant took 1st and 2nd, respectively (What's the deal. Can't we fix it for one of us to win???). Don't forget, Lenny Biallas will be holding another Kentucky Derby pool in the near future.

The 50-50 Card Draw participant was Rick Veihl. Rick drew a 6 of Spades in front of a KHQA-TV camera. If he had won, there is no way he could keep the money without telling his wife. There are now just 15 cards in the deck, so the pot of more than $1,110 grows even more. Look for ESPN to be here this Friday.

Future President Jared Haugh announced at the Club's Board meeting that he will hold the annual President's Planning Meeting at Dennis Koch's office at 6:30pm on April 30. Everyone is welcomed.

Line of the Week

There were quite a few to pick from, so I won't pick one. Here are three of them.

After just hearing about the upcoming convention, Curt Moore asked Dennis Koch for an update. That led Mel Dillman to wait a few minutes and asked Curt

 - "Can you give us an update on the Convention?"

Gary Peters after hearing the initial Convention update (that Curt didn't hear) asked if there was going to be an open bar. He then said

 - "If there is, then I'm not going".

And lastly, Skip Rueter, after listening to Lenny Biallas talk about being out of the country, got up in the middle of Lenny's presentation and said

 - "Gary Peter's will take notes for me, I gotta go pee"
