Club Meets at Noon each Friday at Stoney Creek Inn, 3809 Broadway in Quincy
2012-2013 Lincolnland District Exchange Clubs Best Bulletin Award Winner
This Friday
Good Friday

This Friday is Good Friday so you have two choices. Those choices don't have anything to do with your choice of eating fish or meat. You can either go to Church Friday or come to the Exchange Club meeting. I suggest we "see you in Church" (as the old Indian Fighter Paul Clarkson would have said) because there will be no one to see at the meeting since we won't have one.

The referendum to build a new jail for Adams County will be on the ballot on April 7th and that was the topic last Friday. Club member and Adams County Sheriff Brent Fischer was our speaker. Sheriff Fischer gave a video presentation outlining the new jail proposal. Basically, a yes for a new jail would establish a ¼ cent sales tax meaning that for every $100 purchase made an additional 25 cents would be added (and I went to public school too!) The current Adams County Jail was built 63 years ago and faces many challenges for the personnel who work there according to Sheriff Fisher. Some of those challenges according to the Sheriff include it being a multi-level facility, a lack of space, replacement parts are difficult to find and there is no elevator that goes to all floors including the primary booking area. That forces personnel to sometimes actually carry inmates from floor to floor. The current jail is a 120 bed facility and is chronically over capacity on both the men's and women's areas. According the Sheriff Fischer the National Institute of Corrections and the Department of Corrections have both recommended a new facility be built. Since public officials cannot solicit votes for the new jail a citizen's committee was formed comprised of 21 Adams County residents to campaign for the building of a new jail facility. The issue is on the April 7th ballot and we encourage you to vote one way or the other next Tuesday.

This & That

Jared Haugh's prayer began the ceremonies followed by a lung deflating "I" from Vic Welper to start the Pledge of Allegiance.

The 50-50 card draw with a pot worth $1,065 was held. Rich Howell held the correct ticket but drew a 4 of Diamonds leaving 19 cards in the deck with one of them the Ace of Spades. Wear your name tags because we may have some long lost club members showing up all of a sudden and we wouldn't want them to not know who you are.

Rick Gengenbacher handled the tail twisting duties which included two jokes he told and a table participation joke that was doomed from the beginning when the Indian Chief, played by Jeff Dorsey, screwed up his first line. (Man, the Community Theatre will never call me now). Sorry Rick. Rick's tablemates weren't the sharpest either.

Vic Welper handed out Gus Macker Court Sponsorship forms to the membership. We need everyone to help sell these $300 court sponsorships. All you have to do is ask. If you have questions, contact Vic.

Our agenda-less President Curt Moore held a short board meeting after the regular meeting with the board agreeing to donate $250 to the Special Olympics Track & Field Games for sponsorship of the event.

Good to see John Spring back with us. John is recovering from knee replacement surgery.

Line of the Week

Belongs to President Moore who, after announcing to the membership that he had no agenda to read from, tried to say "Hips won't swivel" with the words coming out " swips won't hibble".

Any volunteers to hold up cue cards for Curt?

Child Abuse Prevention Month

46 years ago, the National Exchange Club adopted Child Abuse Prevention as it's national project. There are more than 70 Exchange Club Child Abuse Prevention Centers throughout the United States, including two here in Illinois (Joliet and Naperville). The centers use a nationally recognized Parent Aide program to help families break the cycle of abuse. To date, more than 690,000 families and 1.7 million children have been helped by the Exchange CAP Centers.

If you think that child abuse doesn't happen in "our" town, you're kidding yourself. At any given time, there are more than 100 children in foster care in our area with DCFS, Chaddock, the Children's Advocacy Network and local law enforcement working abuse cases on a daily basis.

You can show your support for Child Abuse Prevention in several ways. Every Monday in April is designated as a "Blue Monday" - simply wear a blue shirt to show your support. Sport a blue ribbon lapel pin (if you don't have one, the club has several in stock). You can also make a financial contribution. Locally, HyVee is again partnering with our club to sell Blue Ribbons at both Quincy locations. A $1 contribution when you are shopping will take you all of the way, and the proceeds will be distributed locally to a few of our prevention agencies.

You could always make a contribution to the National Exchange Club Foundation through the Campaign for Kids or Mega Raffle too. - just sayin'
