Club Meets at Noon each Friday at Stoney Creek Inn, 3809 Broadway in Quincy
2012-2013 Lincolnland District Exchange Clubs Best Bulletin Award Winner
This Friday
The referendum to build a new jail for Adams County will be on the ballot on April 7th and is the topic this Friday. Club member and Adams County Sheriff Brent Fischer will be our speaker along with former Adams County Sheriff Deputy and Illinois State Trooper Bill Anderson. This is a great opportunity to hear more details on a proposed new jail. It's another great meeting to bring a prospective member and check out Quincy's finest hour!

We kicked off (maybe a wrong choice of words with this group) the 25th anniversary of the Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament with Mr. Macker Scott McNeal in attendance. For those unaware, our very own Mr. Macker. Mike Lavery, brought this event to Quincy convincing the Club to put the event on in Quincy in 1990. Mike told that story and thanked the many people who have made this event possible. Meanwhile, Scott gave his annual "pep" talk to lead us up to the event on May 23rd and 24th. The Quincy tournament is one of over 40 that will be held this year around the nation including 12 new locations. Scott mentioned some of the "classic" things that have happened over the past 25 years of the Quincy Macker.

This year's major sponsors are Refreshment Services Pepsi, The Herald Whig, WGEM, Knapheide Manufacturing, Republic Services and QMG's MAX Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine. Last year's usage of registered officials for the first time was a huge and beneficial change for this event. That decision was universally accepted by fans and players alike. Thanks to Steve Green for handling the introduction. Special thanks goes to Steve Green and Perry Terwelp for stepping up again this year as co-chairmen for this year's silver anniversary event. Neither had silver hair when this tournament started.

This & That

Jared Haugh began events with a humorous opening prayer that included mention of Rich Lavery's 65th birthday.

Joel Koch's rehearsals of saying the word "I" paid off when he led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Brian Koch handled the 50-50 card draw with Rick Veihl getting the opportunity to win the $1018. Unfortunately for him, and fortunately for the rest of us, he drew a 5 of Spades. The pot now grows even more with only 20 cards left in the deck. Getting interesting!

The Tail-twister duties were shared by Rich Gengenbacher and Steve Peters. Rick was asked by President Moore to do the honors but Bruce Broemmel asked Steve Peters to do so as well. Communications....it's a wonderful thing. Steve took over and fleeced the flock.

President Moore thanked Jared Haugh for chairing the Exchange Club March Madness Stag. Special thanks to Skip Rueter and Sonny Christner along with Jimmy Louthen for handling the food for the night. Also thanks to Rick Veihl for securing the bartenders and the Boat Club as a site to hold the event. Nearly 50 members were in attendance that night. Most filled out their NCAA brackets and now must await the payout later.

Jared Haugh presented Rich Lavery some special gifts from the Salvation Army Thrift Shop including a white monogrammed shirt (not sure the initials were correct), a broken watch to make sure Rich is on time for our next meeting, and three darts with no tips that Rich can use to determine the best stock options out there for his clients. Mike Lavery also brought in a cake for his brother for all to enjoy as well.

Special guests at the meeting included Shawn Dickerman of WGEM. Shawn was a guest of Carlos Fernandez. Also visiting us was Tim Schrage and Mike Ernst of Refreshment Services Pepsi. They were guests of Mike Elbe.

Line of the Week

Goes to Mike Lavery who mentioned that Jared Haugh is the same age he was when Macker started 25 years ago. That led to Mike looking at Jared and saying

 - "take a good look at your mirror"

Then pointing at himself said

 - "this could be you in 25 years"

Planning Time for Next Year

Once the calendar flips to April, Exchange starts looking towards planning for the upcoming year, although to a great extent, planning is a year-round thing.

Each year, clubs around the country - and ours is no exception - begin the search for members willing to step up and lead our organization. Part of our leadership team is already in place, as we have 3-deep leadership in Curt Moore, Jared Haugh and Brian Koch, with Jared set to be sworn in as president this summer and Brian next year. There are opportunities as Steve Labs and Joel Koch finish their three-year terms on the board and we'll elect a new vice-president to follow Brian as the 2017-18 Quincy Exchange Club President. If you have any interest in serving, don't wait to be asked - talk to Curt or Immediate Past President Chuck Venvertloh.

Speaking of Jared, he has started putting his leadership team together as well and will be announcing a date for his planning meeting sometime soon. Don't stand on the sidelines - get involved! There are plenty of opportunities to chair or be a member of a committee in this club. Check in with Jared and he'll put you to work!

As was reported a few weeks back, the Lincolnland District is also looking for folks to help with some of their committees - whether you would like to chair a committee or just be a member - we'd like you to help. Let Dennis or Joel know if you have any interest there.
