We featured the individual Arts winners from Arts Quincy, the new name for the Quincy Society of Fine Arts. The event got off to a dramatic start as "King Arthur and Patsy" AKA Bill Stalder and??? came galloping into the room and plugged the Quincy Community Theatre's upcoming Musical "Spamalot". The good King presented our President Moore with a can of Spam as well prior to introducing our speaker Lenny Bart.

Lenny thanked the ticket purchasers and sponsors. He also thanked the board members and then introduced the President of the Board Marianne Barnard. Marianne then thanked the Bank of Quincy for sponsoring the awards with each winner getting $200 for their educational fund and a plaque. Marianne then introduced Troy Kemp of the Bank of Quincy who introduced the presenter of the awards in Quincy Public Schools Superintendent Steven Cobb.

Cobb announced the winners in the four categories of Music, Visual Arts, Theatre and Dance. The Music winner was Andrew Cliatt of Quincy Senior High School. This & That

Jared Haugh began events with an opening prayer followed by Gary Peters leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Nice "I' Gary.

Brian Koch handled the 50-50 card draw with Rich Lavery holding the correct ticket. Rich drew a 3 of Hearts so the pot worth $950 could hit the "Grand" mark this Friday.

The tail-twister was non-existent last Friday and will return this Friday. Hope you all spent your buck wisely.

Congratulations to Rich Howell who marks his 47th year as an Exchange Club member this month. Rich was brought in to the club by Stephen Douglas after the debate ended.

The Exchange Club March Madness Stag will be held this Wednesday, March 18th. The event, with some 40+ people signed up, will be at the Quincy Boat Club at 6:30 at a cost of $20 per person. There will be food, drinks, fun and a chance to fill out your NCAA bracket. This is a great opportunity to invite a guest or potential member. You can still sign up by contacting Jared Haugh at www.bethjared@comcast.net.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Koch family. Their mother, in Brian and Dennis' case, and grandmother, in Joel's case, is recovering from a hospital stay.

Belongs to Rich Zeidler. After hearing Quincy Superintendent of School Steven Cobb recognize that there "appears to be some competition between the Exchange Club and Rotary", Rich bellowed that

 - "there is NO competition at all".

Happy Anniversary Quincy Exchange

The Exchange Club of Quincy traces its roots to 1925, when organizers from the National Exchange Club in Toledo began soliciting men to "Exchange Ideas". The "old club" was chartered in 1926, but disbanded during World War II while these men of action served their country in the battle theatres of the Pacific and Europe. After the war ended, Wilbur Morse, a field representative from the national club, began efforts to restore the club in December 1945. The first meeting was held on January 4, 1946 in the Lincoln-Douglas Hotel where charter officers were elected for a six month term. Those first officers - President Robert S. Hunter, Vice President Daniel W. Bueter, Secretary Hugh T. Kircher and Treasurer Andrew C. Schnack, along with the first Board of Control, Frank Bennett, Herman Schneidman, Morris Tunnicliff, Kenneth Dame and Carlyle B. "Pug" Little, were inducted at the club's charter banquet on March 21, 1946, with 62 charter members on the roster. James W. Kelly, Illinois Exchange Clubs State President presented the club with its charter and gave the installation address.

One of the first community projects sponsored by the Quincy Exchange Club was a model airplane building class for boys, followed by a three-state model airplane show and contest at Baldwin Field. Through the years, the club has identified needs in the community and sought ways to address the issues. When the Saukee Area Council of the Boy Scouts needed space for summer camp, the Exchange Club, along with other service clubs in Quincy, purchased 600 acres east of Lima, Illinois and donated it to the Council. That camp - Saukenauk Scout Reservation - features a Court of Flags and Nature Shelter provided by the Exchange Club, along with McGavran Fire Ring - named after Dr. Harry McGavran, who served as President of the Club in 1951.

Many of those early projects continue to this day. The Book of Golden Deeds,  the deaf children's Christmas program, and the Law Officer of the Year award are three that were started in the early years of the club that continue today.
