Club Meets at Noon each Friday at Stoney Creek Inn, 3809 Broadway in Quincy
2012-2013 Lincolnland District Exchange Clubs Best Bulletin Award Winner
This Friday

The annual visit of Baseball Hall of Fame writer Rick Hummel is this Friday. Hummel, from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and a Quincy Senior High School graduate, will give his insight into the upcoming baseball season and other sports as well. You might want to get there early as a big crowd is anticipated. Better yet, bring a prospective member to enjoy one of the finest hours of the year!

Friday Last

Jack Freiburg and Amy Looten were our guests last Friday as they discussed their attendance at Congressman Aaron Shock's recent Washington, D.C. Fly-In. The participants got an insider view of Washington, D.C. They also got to meet Congressman Shock and his staff, national speakers, and other regional constituents in Shock's district. Some little known facts were that the Capitol Room is much smaller than it looks and the Senate assigns you a desk and the House doesn't. NBC's John Todd, the host of Meet the Press, was the featured speaker for the group. While in Washington, they got to tour the Lincoln Cottage, the Library of Congress, the National Zoo, the World War II and Vietnam War Memorials and the recently reopened Washington Monument. The cost of the trip was between $2,000 to $2500 for the 85 people who went on this year's venture to the Capitol. Special thanks to Birthday boy Eric Thomas for the power point setup and his introduction of our guests.

This & That

Jared Haugh, rapidly becoming our regular prayer giver, handled the assignment again flawlessly.

Rick Veihl, stayed up all night studying the alphabet, got fixated on the letter "I" and began the Pledge of Allegiance correctly. Great job, Rick.

Steve Peters handled the Tail-Twister duties while relaying a personal story of his relationship with his wife and the therapy they both went thru. You had to be there.

President Curt Moore gave us some insight regarding the Avenue of Lights project. Jared Haugh also added the need for people to help with the teardown process which does NOT involve the actual work since the prisoners do the labor needed. Jared is hoping to get several members to assist him with the viewing of the teardown process this Thursday from 11 to 1 at Moorman Park. Please make an effort to be there.

The 50-50 card draw was conducted by Jared Haugh and not Brian Koch last Friday. Jared was asked to do it because our President "Stevie Wonder" didn't realize Brian was in the crowd despite his wearing a florescent green safety sweatshirt. In any case, the pot of $882 was not won as Jared Haugh got the opportunity to be a winner but drew a 2 of Hearts.

Mel Dillman brought a special guest in Cardinal Broadcaster Mike Shannon. Mike left for Spring Training in Florida Monday

Curt Moore gets the honors. Jared Haugh, while conducting the 50-50 drawing, said the Ace of Spades isn't even in the deck. Then he had his ticket number drawn. Curt Moore then said,

 - "Now are you glad the Ace is NOT in the deck?"

State and District Conventions

The Exchange Club of Quincy will host the 89th Lincolnland District Convention at Stoney Creek Inn June 25th thru the 28th this summer. For the record, this will be the 9th time that the District (or state) convention has been held in Quincy - the first was held here in 1938. Since then, it's been about every ten years or so with conventions in 1953, 63, 71, 80, 86, and the last in 1994.

The stories of past "Quincy" conventions still make the rounds at District meetings and conventions. Whether it was "Cow Patty" bingo and the mosquitos on Quinsippi Island, a couple of Exchangites "swimming" in the fountain at the Holiday Inn, the reception for our first female National President or legendary hospitality suites - Quincy has a well-earned reputation to uphold.

Today's district conventions are different from some of those long-ago soirees, with their spouse and children's packages. (The spouses are members now and few children attend the conventions anymore). As we get closer to the convention dates, we'll need a little help to pull everything off, but mainly, we want as many Quincy Exchangites to attend the convention as possible. There'll be golf on Thursday, some really gifted programs and some great fellowship - so put the dates on your calendars!
