2012-2013 Lincolnland District Exchange Clubs Best Bulletin Award Winner
This Friday

Jack Freiburg and Amy Looten will be our guests this Friday as they discuss their attendance at Congressman Aaron Shock's recent Washington, D.C. Fly-In. Should be an interesting discussion so why not bring a friend or prospective member to Quincy's finest hour?

Jennifer Holcomb of Blessing Health System, a certified nurse practitioner whoworks in collaboration with Drs. Max Hammer, Orlando Icaza, Elizabeth Warner, and Adam Reed (bariatric surgeons affiliated with Springfield Clinic and Memorial Bariatric Program), was our speaker. She interviews and examines surgical candidates and assists in the operating room. Jennifer also handles LAP-BAND adjustments and sees patients at their follow-up appointments. Jennifer is a graduate of Saint Louis University and received her Master's Degree in nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner. She is a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Obesity is a huge problem in this country (as I type this with my fat fingers) as evidenced by these numbers. Twenty Six percent of people in Adams County are considered obese. The average in Illinois is between 25 and 20% and the average in Missouri is 30 to 35%. One-third of adults and over 40% of children in the country are considered obese. Up to as many as 40 different ailments can be directly linked to obesity. There are three different laparoscopic surgical procedures that are done in both Quincy and Springfield, Illinois. They are Lap Band, By-Pass and Sleeve procedures. Some 230 surgeries took place in 2014 with an average weight loss of 100 per person. A monthly support group meets the first Tuesday of each month at 1107 College in Quincy. Thanks to Chuck Venvertloh for the introduction.

This & That

Jared Haugh gave yet another rousing prayer to get things going Friday. Thought we might even pass the collection plate afterwards

Dick Wentura initiated the Pledge of Allegiance with an enunciation of the word "I" that sounded more like "Eye" instead. I have no idea what that means.

Bruce Broemmel fleeced the flock as the Tail-Twister telling a golf joke with God ending up giving a golf tip. Had to be there. Bruce nailed Eric Schultz for an extra buck after a reference to Bruce looking up to God. Had to be there. He also took advantage of his authority to settle up with Gary Farha for Gary's insertion of Bruce's face in a recent Meth presentation at the Club. Had to be there. There is a pattern here. You need to be there!!!!

President Curt Moore read a thank you letter from the Hearing Impaired personnel thanking us for our holding the annual Hearing Impaired Christmas program but no one heard him. His letter reading interrupted the tail-twisting that was going on which is a violation of the International Tail-Twisting Association. Like the NFL, that violation "deflated" the tail-twister for just a second, throwing him off of his game somewhat. He did recover nicely though.

After a week's hiatus, the 50-50 card draw was held thanks to Brian Koch. Brian Musholt's ticket was drawn but since he wasn't there this week we drew again and Kevin O'Donnell held the correct ticket. Kevin drew a 3 of Hearts. Apparently Kevin is much better at killing pests than drawing cards. He didn't kill the contest, so the pot of $804 continues to grow.

A long overdue thank you goes to Dennis Koch. Many people come up to me to comment about the bulletin but few know that I basically take a picture of our guest(s), the notes and write it each week and turn it over to Dennis who handles the layout and distributes it each week. He also adds the historical features of the Club from time to time as well. Thanks Dennis for what you do each week in keeping the Club members informed.

Stand up and Say the Pledge

For the last several years, the National Exchange Club has had a membership drive program called Stand Up America and this year is no different. It's a way to encourage prospective members to try Exchange for 90 days just to see who we are. You can download a brochure to see more about Stand Up America here.

As a part of the campaign, which runs through March 31, and in order to demonstrate Exchange's commitment to our great country, Everyone is invited to participate in "Say the Pledge" on President's Day, Monday February 16 at Noon eastern (11 a.m. here in Quincy). Please join Exchangites all across the country as we rise together to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

School is out that day for the holiday, but wouldn't it be great to get the schools involved in encouraging our kids to participate that day?

Speaking of the "Home Office" back in Toledo, they have recently updated their website. I know a lot of you probably didn't know they had a website, but you should check it out at www.nationalexchangeclub.org. The Communications Department pulls news from clubs all over the country to feature on the website, including some of the Big Dog's writing as seen in this article on our recent Character Champions. (scroll down the page until you get to it). While you are on the National Website, request your own password from National so you can view and update your personal information. That way you'll be able to see your information, including records of your giving and all of the benefits that come with membership in Exchange, discounts on hotels and car rentals, insurance and office supplies.

Hope you saw the latest edition of the national magazine, Exchange Today (yes, we have a magazine, too!). Under the awards for the past year, our own Cullen Duke and Chris Parker were listed as recipients of the Distinguished Club Secretary and Distinguished Club Treasurer, respectively. Congratulations Cullen and Chris!
