Adams County First Assistant States Attorney and Club member Gary Farha will be our speaker along with Master Sgt. Pat Frazier from the Adams County Drug Task Force. It will be a busy meeting as we will also present awards to the Character Champion winners and feature the Student of the Month as well. Should be a great meeting so bring a guest with you Friday.

Heather Davis was our speaker last Friday as she updated everyone on the happenings of Special Olympics Illinois. Heather began her position at Special Olympics last July and is a native of Collinsville, Illinois. She graduated Quincy University in the early 90's and has a Master's Degree in Education. Heather mentioned that there are currently 254 Special Olympic athletes from 10 years old on up. That number should be round 700. There are also 354 Special Olympic athletes who are between the ages of 3 to 7. There are some 800 different events these athletes compete in yearly with the Spring Games being the biggest along with the basketball tournaments. The competition can lead to appearances in the Nationals and the World Games as well. Special Olympics also has a Healthy Athletes program to assist athletes in keeping them healthy plus a Global Messenger program to assist them with speaking. The Special Olympic's office has been in the WCU Building in Quincy but theyhave now teamed up and moved in with Q-Town Cross Fit in their building on 12th Street. They are always in need of volunteers to help with fund-raising for events like the upcoming Polar Plunge at Moorman Lake in Quincy on Saturday, February 28th at 12 noon. The Polar Plunge is a unique opportunity to support Special Olympics athletes by taking a flying leap into the frigid waters of Moorman Lake. Participants must raise $75 in donations from friends, family and co-workers in exchange for jumping into the icy waters. All money raised stays in West-Central Illinois.

This & That

Jim Benz presented the prayer to begin our festivities.

Steve Green was asked to initiate the Pledge of Allegiance and he obliged with a mediocre "I" to get us started.

Rick Veihl was asked by President Curt Moore to present information regarding the Club's opportunity to take over ownership of the Avenue of Lights. Rick presented the information and answered questions. He also explained our need for Club members to be a part of this exciting new venture for us. There is also a need for more members to be a part of the Avenue of Lights committee. Contact Rick if you are interested.

For the second week in a row the 50-50 card draw, worth $774, was conducted by Brian Koch. And for the second week in a row Rick Veihl had the winning ticket but drew a 3 of Hearts. So the pot grows even more.

Thanks Rick for thinning out the deck for the rest of us.

Rick Gengenbacher was the tail-twister and made his way around the tables telling a couple of jokes along the way. Good job Rick.

Avenue of Lights

As noted in This & That, a press conference was held Friday morning to announce that, beginning in 2015, the Exchange Club would begin operating the Avenue of Lights. More information on the terms and conditions of our involvement will be released in the coming weeks and months, but in order to give everyone an idea of what we have gotten ourselves into, here's a brief history on the Avenue of Lights.

The Quincy Chamber of Commerce started the Avenue of Lights 16 years ago in Wavering and Upper Moorman Park. The light festival runs from Thanksgiving night through New Years Day and has grown to about 150 individual displays. in 2010, Avenue of Lights Inc. received their IRS determination letter as a charitable not-for-profit organization and holds all of the assets. More than 53,000 cars have gone through the display in the past four years, including a record 14,250 this past year. Net income (after depreciation) for 2011, 2013 and 2013 (the last three years for which information is available) was $50 thousand, $50 thousand and $69 thousand, respectively.

The labor to set up and take down the displays is provided by the Clayton Work Camp (same as Gus Macker), while folks from a number of community groups work the event in return for a share of the proceeds. This will be a great addition for Quincy's Finest Hour gang!
