Last Friday, our speaker was Mr. Jay Craig, the Director of Stewardship at Shiloh Christian Children's Ranch in Shelbina and Clarence, Missouri. Mr. Craig related stories about some of the students that have graduated from Shiloh over the years, which house abused and neglected children from all over the Midwest. These students include a young lady from South Dakota who is now a researcher at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, an Oklahoma student who now runs his own recording studio, several graduates who are now moving through the ranks of the armed forces and a several more that just live normal lives.

Shiloh has a staff of 25 with room for up to 60 children. As a not-for-profit, religious based organization, they are not required to be a licensed home in Missouri, nor do they accept government grants. As a result, there student population is currently around 30, as state agencies in Missouri have made the decision to send children only to licensed homes.

Without government funding, Shiloh operates almost entirely on contributions from the public. With a budget of nearly $2 million, that's a lot of public contributions. Shiloh has an 8 member board of directors that includes Pete Million of Quincy.

Thanks to Mel Dillman, an old Monroe City classmate of Jay's, for the introduction.

This & That

John Spring led us in prayer while Mike Brennan got the pledge going.

No guests this week. President Moore made an early payment to Perry Terwelp for recruiting new member Andy Waggoner, but Andy wasn't able to join us Friday for his induction into the club.

President Curt reported on the board meeting held Thursday and reported that a $500 contribution to Transitions and a $400 contribution to the Children's Advocacy Network were approved

Bruce twisted some tails, but that jolly old elf, Jeff Dorsey was off visiting his brother. Jeff was advised to bring something with a picture of Abe on it next meeting.

The card draw was worth $700 this week and Steve Labs had the lucky number, but drew the Queen of Spades - light crowd this week, so next week's pot is worth $734.

Please remember that the club Christmas party has been changed from January 2 to December 31 at noon. There was a scheduling conflict with the boat club for the 2nd, so we'll get New Year's Eve started off a little early! There will not be a regular meeting on December 26 or January 2.

Condolences to Zeke Cernea and his family on the death of his grandfather this past weekend.

Everyone have a great Christmas and we'll see you on Wednesday the 31st at the Boat Club!

Line of the Week

Lines of the week were hard to come by Friday and there was a request for more Paul Clarkson, so here's his closing from April 9, 1986 -

Toss Outs -

A guy took his date a bunch of beautiful roses and she was so pleased, she disrobed completely, stretched out seductively on the sofa and said "these are for the roses". He said come now, surely you have a vase somewhere in the apartment"... A handsome physical education instructor was having a drink at a bar when a playgirl made him an offer. He said "No, I'm keeping myself pure until I meet the girl I love." She said sympathetically, "That must be very difficult." He replied, "I don't mind so much, but it has my wife pretty upset."

Exchange Education

Back before the Mall, when all of the shopping was in downtown Quincy, the Exchange Club sponsored Santa's workshop in Washington Park. Santa would arrive in a special Ozark Airlines jet at Baldwin Field and make his way through town to 5th & Maine.

Children and their parents would line up around the park to see Santa. It would take all day to make your way through the lines to tell Santa what you wanted for Christmas.

As popular as the project was, with a competing Santa at the Legion Town & Country Shopping Center, (The Quincy Mall), and the demise of shopping in what is now known as the District, there were fewer and fewer children visiting cold Washington Park. The Mall, with its climate-controlled areas had their own program, so the Downtown Santa's village eventually faded away.

Thousands of kids (including this one) will never forget the big red and white house in the park.
