2012-2013 Lincolnland District Exchange Clubs Best Bulletin Award Winner
This Friday
We are back at Stoney Creek Inn for one of our best meetings of the year as we hold the HEARING IMPAIRED CHRISTMAS PROGRAM. If you are not in the Christmas spirit when you arrive this Friday for the meeting, you will be when you leave. Bring a guest and enjoy the kid's Christmas skit that they will perform for us as well as a visit from Santa.

Friday Last

Last Friday we got to hear about the Children's Advocacy Network, formerly known as CASA, as Clairice Hetzler was our speaker. The Advocacy Network for Children, formerly known as Children's Action Network, is a not for profit organization. This organization began after the Exchange Club provided $5,000 as seed money.

Established in 1990 as a Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Adams County, the agency focused on the recruitment, training and supervision of volunteers who speak in the best interest of abused or neglected children in the court system. As the agency broadened its mission to serve abused children in the community, it opened its doors of the Children's Advocacy Center (CAC) in Adams County in 1999. They serve a 9 county area.

When Clairice began 17 years ago there were some 60 to 80 children helped. This year there will be over 500 children assisted by her office. Over her tenure at the Network, there have been over 4000 children involved with sexual abuse cases. She would like to see more people step up and report child abuse when they see it. It is a problem in that they don't want to get involved.

According the Clairice, to help kids you have to help their parents first. And as a result her agency will be hosting a Parenting Conference at JWCC in March that will feature a dozen or so organizations.

Funding is also a problem especially with the State of Illinois is lagging in their payments to the agency. A major fundraiser will be held on February 28th featuring a huge Mardi Gras party at the Ambiance and will also include auction items as well.

They currently have a fundraiser going on at the Quincy Mall as they will wrap your Christmas presents for a small fee which goes to the Children's Advocacy Network.

Thanks to Mel Dillman, who holds a special place in his heart for this organization, for providing the introduction.

This & That

Jared Haugh provided the opening prayer and did so with his usual flair.

Jeff Dorsey followed with a boisterous "I" to begin the Pledge of Allegiance in front of a makeshift flag made up of Rich Howell's RED sweater, Mike Smith's WHITE turtleneck and Bill Stalder's BLUE jacket. Unfortunately, there were no stars in the room (Sorry Carlos).

Bruce Broemmel conducted the tail-twisting duties and included a congressional joke along the way.

President Curt held a first reading for a new member in the name of Andy Waggoner. He is being sponsored by Perry Terwelp.

The Exchange Club's Mid-Year Conference was held last weekend. Look for an update this Friday from Dennis and Joel Koch who attended it.

Last week's 50-50 card draw was worth $666 (oh my!). Gary Hillebrenner had the winning ticket but drew a 10 of Hearts so the pot will get off the "disturbing" number to a more Christmas type number Friday.

We had one guest and that was Mr. Chad Masner (I hope I spelled that right) from the Bank of Springfield. He was a guest of Dan Niemann.

Hats off to Charlie Ledbetter and everyone who helped serve over 100 meals at the annual "Give a Kid a Chance" Christmas Dinner that featured a visit by Santa (Dog) Claus Friday night at the Senior Center.

Special thanks to the Town & Country Inn and Suites for accommodating us on short notice after Stoney Creek had a double booking for our usual room.

Some upcoming meetings will feature:

12-19 Jay Craig of Shiloh Christian Children's Home

12-26 No Meeting except for you heathens

1-2 Club Christmas Party at the Boat Club

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Dr. Carl T. "Doc" Armstrong who passed away on December 2nd at the age of 82. "Doc" was a long time member of the Club and was a very well respected veterinarian at Armstrong-Reich Veterinary Clinic from 1961 until his retirement in 1997.

Line (Joke) of the Week

We were somewhat subdued last Friday so here is a Christmas Joke instead. The Supreme Court has ruled there cannot be a live nativity scene in Washington, D.C. this Christmas. It isn't for any religious constitutional reason. They simply have not been able to find 3 wise men.

Spouse Christmas Party - Last Chance!

We need to turn in a final number for food Tomorrow (Wednesday) morning. If you would like to bring your wife or girlfriend (but not both) to the Christmas party this Friday (December 12) at Drakes, please click here and let Dennis know today!

Open bar at 6, dinner at 6:30, which will include carved beef, chicken, salad & veggies. Entertainment at 7:30 will feature Aspen Gengenbacher, niece of Rick.

Join us Friday evening for some good food, good entertainment and good fellowship!

This week's program is our annual Hearing Impaired class play with a visit from Santa.

The program originated in 1964 - making this the 50th anniversary (and 51st program). In the beginning, when the club still met at the Lincoln-Douglas Hotel, Judge Ed Dittmeyer and Bob Wacholz chaired the event and Terry Bourrett was the Department Head for Quincy Public Schools. For many years, Bob Moss chaired this program, Craig Schaffer played Santa and Dee Axel was the teacher in charge of the program for QPS.
In more recent times, Art Awerkamp has chaired the program and the Big Dog himself, Jeff Dorsey has played Santa.

Since its inception in 1964, the hearing impaired classes have put together a Christmas play and presented it to the club. The Committee (which usually meant Ed, Bob, or Art's wife) purchased and wrapped presents for the students. Following the play, Santa arrives and hears what each of the students would like for Christmas and gives each of the boys and girls a present. Finally, the club presents the Hearing Impaired program with a gift or check to purchase something for the class that is outside of the district's budget.
