QND Coach Bob Sheffield and QHS Coach Andy Douglas were our guests with the annual season preview of the 2014-15 basketball season.

Coach Douglas, in his first season as head coach at Quincy Senior High school, is operating under what he calls the "BD5 plan". This plan deals with Integrity, Commitment, Discipline, Trust and Pride & Respect for his players and coaches to follow. The 2014-15 Blue Devils team will be young, inexperienced, small but quick. The Devils will run a lot which is similar to the days when Coach Douglas actually was a Blue Devil player. They should be competitive in a very tough Western Big Six Conference.

Coach Sheffield's Quincy Notre Dame Raider team will be young with some experience with 3 seniors on the team. They have some height with 4 players over 6'5". They are dealing with an injury bug with four of the 14 players dealing with injuries to start the season. Coach Sheffield has three main themes he reminds his players of. Those themes are QND Pride & Tradition, The Legacy of the uniform number on your back and the Cross on your chest representing your spirituality. Coach Sheffield is attempting to teach his kids the "game of life" thru basketball.

Both teams will be getting their seasons started with play in their own Thanksgiving Tournaments. We wish the best of luck to QHS and QND. Special thanks to WGEM's Ben Marth who served as MC for the event
.

This & That

With a robust clang of the bell by President Moore, Jared Haugh began activities with a special Thanksgiving prayer which actually received a hearty "Amen" from Eric Schultz prior to the prayer's completion.

Kyle Awerkamp was to begin the Pledge of Allegiance but Uncle Art jumped the gun on him with a firm "I" with the rest of the Club following.

With Steve Peters not in the house, President Curt frantically was looking for someone to step up and tail twist. That somebody turned out to be Jared Haugh. Thanks again Jared.

Brian Koch conducted the 50-50 Card draw worth $633. Dick Wentura was fortunate to have the correct ticket and we were all fortunate that Dick drew a King of Diamonds giving all of us a chance to win the money next time.

President Curt Moore mentioned the Board action of approving $250 as a donation to the Shiloh Children's Ranch. Curt also informed the Club that the Board is establishing a committee to handle the public relations for the Club. That committee is comprised of David Adam, Kyle Awerkamp, Joel Koch and Dennis Koch who will act as chairman.

Curt also mentioned the District meeting will be taking place in Bloomington on December 5th. It is free to attend if you would like to go. Contact Joel Koch for more information.

Vic Welper told a story of how he got his first Gus Macker Court sponsor when a lady from Troy, Missouri called him to see if she could get two Toilet Bowl trophies from past years. Vic found two and when she asked what it cost he responded "a court sponsorship", which she agreed to. See, all you have to do is ask!

Jeff Dorsey presented the news for the entire club to absorb. Some of the Club made the news as well. As explained, it was really an audition for the recent openings at WGEM and KHQA. People just might like this kind of news over what is happening in the world today.

Charlie Ledbetter can use some help with the "Give a Kid a Chance" Christmas Dinner and Santa visit on December 5th at the Senior Center. We can also use someone to assist Santa by being Time Out Teddy that night as Joel Koch is not available (District Meeting for him).

The spouse Christmas party will be held at Drakes in the Quality Inn (the old Holiday Inn) at 3rd and York. It's free (your favorite price!). There will be plenty of good food, great fellowship and entertainment! Let Dennis know if you are coming, so he can get a count for meals.

Good to see Rich Howell back with us after taking a fall and suffering two broken ribs.

Troy Kemp of Bank of Quincy was the guest of Mike Smith.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the family of former Exchangite Dick Hessling who passed away. Mr. Hessling is a former Law Officer of the Year

Goes to Jared Haugh. While tail-twisting, Jared mentioned to Chuck Venvertloh

 - "It must be nice to know that 4,200 people really don't like you"

(that was the total votes for Chuck's opponent - a convicted felon - in the recent election)

Something to think about
from Dennis Koch

We've discussed how the Exchange Club works as a not-for-profit organization. We have charitable foundations at the club level - Quincy Exchange Club Foundation - District level - Lincolnland Exchange Clubs Foundation for Youth - and at the National level - the National Exchange Club Foundation.

All of our local fundraising - Macker, Smoke and Flags - run through the Quincy XC Foundation, making contributions tax deductible and saving us thousands of dollars annually in sales tax. Lincolnland has established an endowment fund to help pay for the Youth of the Year and ACE recipients. Several of our local students have received a $2,500 scholarship from the District over the last 10 years or so. The National Exchange Club Foundation provides funding for the National Youth scholarships - $20,000 each year - as well as funding for Child Abuse Prevention programs and Americanism projects on a national level.

To paraphrase a famous quote - all fund raising is local. I know a lot of our members want to keep our money "local", but without our "local" clubs, there is no "National". As we approach the end of the year, please think about a small, tax deductible, donation to the NEC Foundation. It's quick and easy to do - simply click on the picture above and it will take you straight to the national page (a secure site) where you can donate by credit card. If you prefer not to use your card over the internet, you should have recently received a request in the mail, or just mail a check to the National Exchange Club Foundation, 3050 Central Avenue, Toledo OH 43606.

It doesn't have to be much - $10 or $20 from every Exchnagite would make a huge difference!

If you are interested in retirement income while helping Exchange or in making a legacy gift, please let me know.

Thank you in advance for everything that you do for Exchange!

Dennis Koch, President
National Exchange Club Foundation
