This Friday
We meet this Friday at the All Wars Museum at the Illinois Veteran's Home for our annual Veteran's Day program. Why not invite a veteran to join us? Thanks to Mel Dillman, Rick Gengenbacher and Art Awerkamp for their work in preparing this meeting which will include the setting up of the Exchange Club's Field of Honor.

Terry Martin, one of the new owners for the Quincy Gems Baseball Team, was our featured speaker. Terry updated us on the history of the team and some of the new things that will be happening in the 2015 season. The Gems were members of the Central Illinois Collegiate League from 1996 to 2009. They then joined the Prospect League in 2009 and have won 3 of the 6 championships since then.

The players are all college ballplayers and do not get paid to play. They all must have eligibility left in order to participate in the league. The players are selected by Chris Martin, Terry's son and also a co-owner of the franchise. Chris uses his contacts to secure players from colleges all over the country for the team. So far he has 18 players lined up to play for the team that will feature 28 players, two more than last year's roster limit set by the league.

Some of the new things to look for are a new scoreboard which will feature a video screen, a whiffle ball diamond for kids to play on during the game and a bounce house. The team has also purchased their own bus which will reduce the travel expenses in 2015. The prices to advertise at the game have been reduced with additional options being available for sponsors. The admission price has also been reduced along with more options for multi game tickets as well.

To further prove the quality of players in the league, 55 ball players from the 11 teams were drafted by the Major League teams last year. Currently former Quincy Gems infielder Adam Rosales and former Quincy Gems pitcher Neal Cotts are in the Major Leagues playing for the Texas Rangers.

In 2015 there will be 12 teams in the league with the addition of Kokomo, Indiana added to the Western Division with the Gems. According to Martin, the Gems employ some 35 people during the season. Looks like things are looking up for the Quincy Gems under their new ownership. Exchangite Jimmy Louthen, who handled the introduction, along with his wife, Julie, are the other co-owners of the team.

This & That

Mike Lavery handled the delivery of our opening prayer with words of thought and condolences to former Exchangite Dale Venvertloh and his wife Marty on the loss of their son, D.J., who passed away after a battle with brain cancer.

Rick Goughner began the Pledge of Allegiance with a robust "I" which set off a thunderous response from the rest of the Club members to complete the recital.

Jeff Dorsey handled the tail-twisting duties and on Halloween told an audience participation Halloween joke about a coffin chasing a man home. It was enjoyed by almost all (minus the rest of the Club members in attendance). I guarantee it was told by others later in the day although no one will say so. This tail-twisting is getting tough on me.

Brian Koch completed the duty of the 50-50 Card Draw. Hal Broadwater had the correct ticket but drew a 5 of Clubs. So the pot of $578 will grow again.

Art Awerkamp revealed that we received a $1,000 check from Refreshment Services Pepsi for the "Field of Honor" campaign. That brings us to a total of $17,000 raised for the event so far. Signup sheets were on tables and help will be needed for this event from Friday thru Tuesday (Nov. 11th). Thanks to those who have signed up. If you haven't signed up and now can assist, contact Art Awerkamp for an assignment.

The Exchange Club will be participating in the Veteran's Day Parade this Saturday. We will be carrying a banner and the huge American Flag down Maine Street. We will need about 15 members to help us with this. We will gather at the Jr. High parking lot at 9am. We are entry number 6.

Don't forget, you are all welcomed to attend the Veteran's Day Ceremony at Lippincott Hall at the Illinois Veteran's Home on Tuesday, November 11th at 10am.

President Curt Moore is actively looking to find some people who will assist him with the Character Champions event. For the past 12 years, Jim Benz, Jim Totsch and Kurt Frageman have done a remarkable job with this program but all three requested that they would like to step down. If you can help, contact Curt.

Steve Labs placed pamphlets on the tables for the November 13th    Hy-Vee Holiday Show to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. There will be some 60 beer and wine sampling tables at the event at the Oakley-Lindsay Center.

Come armed for the next several weeks with some extra cash as we will begin collecting our annual tip for Jennifer, our weekly waitress. For new members to the Club, we usually collect at least $10 from each member. If you attend all 50 meetings during the year, that comes to 20 cents a meeting (sometimes I amaze myself with my math abilities).

We held the drawing to determine the winner of two seats on the B-25 and the aforementioned Jennifer drew the name of Jeff Dorsey. Thanks to Mel Dillman for handling this project.

Make sure you head to the polls today (Tuesday, November 4th) and vote. Polls will be open until 7pm.

This is the weekend, gentlemen. On Friday, following the meeting, we'll need some help from club members to install the field. Thanks to Steve and Eric Green, Doug Greenwell and Art Awerkamp, the Field of Honor has all been laid out - now all we need to do is drive 1,000 pieces of rebar. We have 24 drivers (thanks to Bill Awerkamp) - but we need members to drive the rebar and set the flags. It won't take long with lots of help, and if you don't have the "umph" to drive, you can help set the flag poles.

During the weekend, we'll need field guides (basically just a few adults to give direction) during the day.

On Tuesday, following the program at the Veterans Home, we'll need help dismantling the field and putting the flags back on the trailer.

This is going to be a very impressive display for Quincy - plan to be a part of it this weekend!

Growth and Retention of Membership

The life-blood of any organization is it's membership, and that is true of Exchange as well. 2013-14 saw net growth in the National Exchange Club for the first time since the 1980's, 23 new Exchange Clubs built throughout the country. The National Exchange Club is off to a good start in 2014-15, with 8 new clubs already built and many more in the pipeline, including our project to build a club in Decatur. (more on the Decatur club project in a bit)

Our own membership has recently dropped below 100 members for the first time in a long time. We are currently at 96 members after cleaning up the roster a bit. While we are still the second largest club in the Lincolnland District (Naperville is the largest), we need to grow! With the many projects that we undertake to make our community a better place to live, we need many hands to lighten the load.

It's impossible to retain 100% of our members for an extended period of time - folks pass away, change jobs, move to other towns or just lose interest, and we need to work to replace them each year. In a typical year, we need to bring in about 1 new member each month just to break even on the year.

Recruiting new members is EVERYONE'S job! Talk to your friends, co-workers and business associates - someone though enough to bring you into this club, it's time for you to return the favor and bring someone in.

You know the fun we have and the importance of the work we do in the community - pass it on!
