The 6th Annual Firefighter of the Year Award was presented at last week's meeting. The 2014 Exchange Club Firefighter of the Year Award went to Lieutenant Richard Kestner of the Tri-Township Fire Department. Kestner began his firefighting career as a volunteer in 1994. In the 20 years since, he has made the move from volunteer to the rank of Lieutenant. He is the department's Haz-Mat's officer since 2007 and is a certified fire investigator. Kestner has also taken on the responsibility of the repair and maintenance of the department's loose equipment and small engines. The department also benefits from his background in building construction. According to Chief Rick Zaerr, who accepted the honor on behalf of Kestner who was not able to be at the meeting (on vacation in Cancun), "when there is a project to make a repair or modification to the station, he always gets the task done, using his own tools and equipment which saves the department money that can be used for other repairs or upgrades. He is dependable, a hard worker, well-liked by his colleagues and is always willing to help others.

Among the special guests were:

  • Chief Joe Henning, Fire Chief of the Quincy Fire Department
  • Chief Rick Zaerr, Fire Chief of the Tri-Township Fire Department

Plus Past recipients of the Exchange Club Firefighter of the Year award:

  • Captain Tom Bentley of the Quincy Fire Department - 2009
  • Assistant Chief Darren Smith of the Tri-Township Fire Department - 2010 recipient
  • Lt. Dennis Behl of the Quincy Fire Department - 2011
  • Lt. Eric Becks and Firefighter Justin Twaddle of the Quincy Fire Department - 2012
  • Assistant Fire Chief James Pioch of the Quincy Fire Department. - 2013

A special Exchange Club 2014 Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award was also presented to Brother Ed Arambasich, the Quincy Fire Department Chaplain. Quincy Fire Chief Joe Henning, in his nomination, stated that "there has been no other person that has done more to promote family, faith, and firefighter wellness" than Brother Ed.

Thanks to the Exchange Club Committee of Hal Broadwater, Jim Benz, Steve Green, Chuck Venvertloh and Carlos Fernandez. Carlos served as the MC for the event.

Our featured speaker was Retired Lt. Colonel Barry Cheyne. Cheyne served our great country with honor for over 39 years, 28 years with United States Air Force, retiring as a Lt Colonel and over 11 years with the Federal Government as senior executive and manager for the Defense Threat Reduction Agency in Fort Belvoir, Virginia.

He earned his Master's Degree in Public Administration from the University of Arkansas in 1985, and is a 1992 graduate of the FBI National Academy, Quantico, Virginia,

Mr. Cheyne was the Director of Security for the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon during the September 11, 2001 international terrorist attack on the Pentagon and led efforts to sustain the Department of Defense continuity of operations.

Colonel Cheyne relayed stories of that day and how difficult it was to function with communications down and heavy jet fuel smoke penetrating the Pentagon. 64 people died on the plane and 125 perished in the Pentagon that day. He also revealed that the Pentagon received some 15 to 20 bomb threats the following day as well.

This & That

The opening prayer was delayed when Brother Ed was unfortunately dealing with another issue. Upon his arrival he was pressed in to duty and he, as expected, performed remarkably.

Charlie Ledbetter began the Pledge of Allegiance. There was no tail twister last week and much to the happiness of Dick Wentura (who wasn't even at the meeting), there was no card draw either so the pot of over $517 will be available for his winning this Friday.

President Curt Moore announced the passing of Slim Sommerville at the Illinois Veteran's Home. Slim was a long time member of the Exchange Club before falling into ill health a few years ago. He was one of the Club's tail-twisters as well. Our thoughts go out to his family.

You have one more opportunity to purchase a raffle ticket to win two seats in the upcoming B-25 flights during Veteran's Day. These flights will help offset the cost of a flyover during the Veteran's Parade. A raffle ticket costs $5. The drawing will take place this Friday. Mel Dillman is handling this project.

Kyle Awerkamp announced that WGEM and the Quincy Herald Whig are donating an on-line campaign to help promote the Field of Honor Flag campaign. This is on the heels of an earlier $1,000 cash donation to the cause as well.

Art Awerkamp mentioned the reception of $1,000 from ADM of Quincy and Classique Signs. Art also stated that the sign-up sheets will be on the table again this Friday as we will need help on November 7th thru the 11th in setting up and taking down the flags with supervision needed in between. If you haven't signed up already, please sign up Friday to help.

Special thanks to Club member Bill Awerkamp of Awerkamp Machine Company for assisting with the assembly of the flags and stands we will be using. Transitions will also be providing assistance as well.

In addition to our firefighter guests, our speaker's wife Jeanne Grist Cheyne and her mother, Mrs. Bonnie Grist were guests at the meeting. Also in attendance was Glenda Hackamack from the City of Quincy.

Also enclosed this week is a picture of the Exchange Club Bowling team that participated in the recent Bowling Tournament to fight Autism. The team was headed by Perry Terwelp.

After Carlos said he would fill time with a series of dirty jokes until Brother Ed arrived, Art Awerkamp then blurted out

 - "Good, then Brother Ed can take over".

After Kyle Awerkamp pointed out that his Uncle Art Awerkamp failed to notice a typo in the Field of Honor news release, Jeff Dorsey blurted out

 - "next time have Stevie Wonder read it over".

After the microphone kept making popping noises, Mel Dillman asked Carlos Fernandez at the podium if he was "wearing bubble-wrap underwear".

Exchange Education

National Exchange Club Foundation

Without trying to get too technical, for "tax" purposes, the National Exchange Club and all of its districts and local clubs are what is know as 501(c)(4) organizations under the Internal Revenue Code. This means that they are tax exempt organizations, but donations to them are not tax deductible. As a result, The National Exchange Club and many of the districts and local clubs, including the Lincolnland District and our own club, have established foundations [501(c)(3) organizations] to accept charitable contributions.

What started out as two separate foundations - first the educational foundation and later the foundation for the prevention of child abuse - were later merged to create the National Exchange Club Foundation (NECF). The primary mission of the NECF was to administer Exchange's child abuse prevention efforts and raise money. In 2012, the National Board of Directors and the NECF Board of Trustees made the decision to move the child abuse prevention activities to the National Exchange Club as part of our programs of service, leaving the NECF with the primary mission of raising and providing resources for the National Exchange Club and all of its programs of service, including child abuse prevention (CAP).

The NECF raises funds by searching for corporate sponsorship and grant opportunities and new initiatives to reach out to the general public such as the MegaRaffle, Giving Tuesday and the Constructive Challenge. Our largest potential source of new revenue, however, is our membership.

Notwithstanding the portion of dues that are used to fund CAP and the clubs who support the Campaign for Kids and Oceans Campaign, only 4% of our membership contributed to our Foundation last year. We are blessed with some very generous donors who have contributed to the NECF over the years, and not everyone has the resources to give at those levels, or even become a Berkey Fellow with a $1,000 endowment gift. But if each of Exchange's 19,000 or so members gave just $1 a month - the price of a Coke at McDonald's - our Foundation would have nearly a quarter million new dollars. $1 a week would generate $1 million.

With that kind of money, Exchange could afford to assist CAP centers in financial crisis, increase the amount or number of youth scholarships that we award or even start a national marketing campaign for Exchange. The options are only limited by our imaginations.

The work we do in Exchange is important to the communities we live and work in, and the funds that we raise as local clubs provide the basis for a lot of that work. What sometimes goes unnoticed, though is the importance of the work done by the National Exchange Club and the Districts in support of the clubs and our members. Whether its branding, training, insurance or just general support, every Exchangite should consider a tax deductible contribution to support our Foundation.

You can make a contribution here or by mail to the National Exchange Club Foundation, 3050 Central Avenue, Toledo OH 43606. If you are interested in more information on the Berkey Fellowship program or ways that you can benefit Exchange while receiving a guaranteed annuity, please contact Dennis Koch.
