Quincy School Board member Jeff Mays will be our speaker this Friday. One of the hot topics that will be discussed is the school referendum to build new facilities. It is on the November ballot and Mr. Mays will try and sort it all out for us.
We will also feature our Student of the Month from QND.

Retire Marine Lt. Colonel Paul Schimpf of Waterloo, Illinois was our speaker. Mr. Schimpf was the lead attorney advisor to the Iraqi prosecutors in the Saddam Hussein case.

He didn't start out as the lead advisor until the trial kept getting delayed and the lead advisor then had to return to the United States. At that point, Colonel Schimpf became the lead man. Due to Colonel Schimpf's experience as an infantry officer, he was instrumental in gathering the needed witnesses for the prosecution.

Colonel Schimpf discussed the differences in the court systems of the United States and that of Iraq. He also reviewed the circumstances that led to the trial and that dated back to 1982. It was that year that an attempt to assassinate Hussein took place by 12 men. All 12 were killed but Hussein decided to arrest over 1000 people and massacred 150 men and boys as retribution. It was that act that led to his trial in 2006. He was found guilty on November 5th of that year and executed by hanging on December 30th of the same year.

One of the interesting and humorous parts of the trial came when Hussein complained to the judge that when he was found hiding in an underground bunker that someone stole his Rolex watch. A very interesting program and thanks to Colonel Schimpf for his presentation and thanks to Randy Frese for his introduction.

This & That

President Curt Moore read a thank you note from the Veteran's Parade Committee for our donation to their parade. President Moore had a much better bell ringing ceremony this week. He must be practicing.

Jared Haugh followed with an inspirational message with our opening prayer.

Mel Dillman, despite a sore throat, was able to state the word "I" to commence the Pledge of Allegiance.

Sonny Christner did a fabulous job of tail-twisting which included a great "work-out" story that included an ATM machine. Had to be there.

Jared Haugh conducted the 50-50 card draw flawlessly. With the pot worth $517, Dennis Koch got the opportunity to draw the winning card of Ace of Spades but he drew a Jack of Clubs instead. So the pot grows. (Can I say that a get away with it?)

You are running out of opportunities to purchase a raffle ticket to win two seats in the upcoming B-25 flights during Veteran's Day. These flights will help offset the cost of a flyover during the Veteran's Parade. A raffle ticket costs $5. We will sell them during our meetings for the next few weeks with the drawing to take place on October 31st. See Mel Dillman to purchase a ticket.

Dennis Koch updated us on the Field of Honor campaign. Last week we received $1,000 from Quincy Mack Trucks. So far $15,000 has been raised.

The new Exchange Club shirt order is currently being taken. Order forms will be on the tables next week. Contact Dennis Koch if you want one and can't be there.

New Club Shirts

If you are interested in purchasing a new shirt, pleas let Dennis know by sending your shirt size to exchange@adams.net. Cost is $32 and the shirts are a 60/40 cotton/polyester blend. We'll place the order before the end of the month to see if can get them before the Field of Honor event, so don't delay!

Please keep the weekend o November 7 - 11 open to help out at the field! We'll have a road trip meeting to the Illinois Veterans Home on Friday, November 7 and ask that as many of you as possible stick around after the meeting to help set up the flags. It's a simple process, but there are 1,000 flag that need to be set up.

On Saturday, Sunday & Monday, we'll need members (and families and friends) to volunteer to man the tent. No heavy lifting - we just need to be there to answer questions and give direction.

Finally, on Tuesday, following the Veterans Home ceremony, we'll need help taking everything down.

Exchange Education

Our Programs of Service

The National Exchange Club has four Programs of Service that all of our projects fall under. Those programs are Americanism, Community Service, Youth Activities and our National Project, the Prevention of Child Abuse.

This week, we'll focus on Child Abuse Prevention. Our National Project, Child Abuse Prevention is something that nobody wants to talk about, but is prevalent in all of our communities - including Quincy. It's recently gotten more attention due to Adrian Peterson and other high-profile folks, so at least that's a start.

Locally, our biggest CAP project is Give-a-kid-a-chance, where we provide Christmas dinner and presents to every foster child in Adams County. This year's dinner will be held on Friday, December 5. It's always a great time for the kids who get to tell Santa Dorsey what they want for Christmas.

In addition, we provide financial support to the Children's Advocacy Network and the First Steps Programs at Cornerstone and Transitions with the proceeds of our Blue Ribbon Campaign. Thanks to our friends at HyVee, we've raised over $4,000 with the campaign over the last two years.
