2012-2013 Lincolnland District Exchange Clubs Best Bulletin Award Winner
This Friday
Paul Schimpf will be our speaker. Mr. Schimpf was the lead attorney in the Sadam Hussein case. Mr. Schimpf is also waging a write-in campaign for State Attorney General, so it should be a very interesting meeting so invite a friend to join us this Friday. Randy Frese will handle the introductions.

Shay Drummond and Candy Miller from the Adams County Health Department joined us to discuss their "Give a Kid a Smile" campaign. The mission of their program is to bring caring volunteers and organizations together for the purpose of delivering quality services to children. Some interesting facts presented included that over 40% of all Americans fail to see a dentist, even once a year and that percentage climbs to over 70% for the poorer population.

Tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease with 53% of all 6 to 8 year olds in America and 84% of all 17 year old Americans are suffering from tooth decay. Nationally, over 53 million school hours are lost because of this problem. Locally, over 1400 children have been served in a four county region over the last 8 years.

They currently partner with volunteer dentists, the Public School System on getting the word out about their services and also on transporting these students to the facility for treatment. The 9th Annual Give Kids a Smile event will be held at the Adams County Health Department on February 6, 2015.

Thanks to Josh Klitz for handling the introduction with precision reading of his smart phone.

This & That

President Curt Moore "bunted" the mallet to strike the bell instead of going for the fences. As a result, the effect of the bell-ringing ceremony lost something. Perhaps practice is needed.

Jim Benz followed with our opening prayer (He needed to pray for Curt).

After being asked to begin the "prayer", President Moore then corrected himself and asked Art Awerkamp to utter the all-important first word of "I" to initial the Pledge of Allegiance.

Jeff Dorsey (that be me) presented the news to a very skeptical audience who rode a roller-coaster of good and bad stories with the bad outdoing the good. I promise to do much better next time especially when I incorporate several club member names next time.

Rick Gengenbacher handled the tail-twisting assignment Friday utilizing the opportunity to give a reprieve of paying a dollar to the widows and orphans fund to Jeff Dorsey (that be me again) for the horrible presentation of the news, and to one particular table if they still had their own teeth (appropriate for the topic of the day). Rick also took the opportunity to show President Moore how to strike the bell to begin the meeting.

Chuck Venvertloh handled the 50-50 card draw despite having no idea what he pot was worth. It was believed to be over $484 and Mike Lavery had a shot at it. He drew the 8 of Clubs so the pot grows to who knows what.

Mel Dillman will continue to sell raffle tickets to win two seats in the upcoming B-25 flights during Veteran's Day. These flights will help offset the cost of a flyover during the Veteran's Parade. A raffle ticket costs $5. We will sell them during our meetings for the next few weeks with the drawing to take place on October 31st.

Art Awerkamp updated us on the Field of Honor campaign. So far $14,000 has been raised. The next meeting for this project is tomorrow (Wednesday, October 8th) night at 6pm at ETC Computerland. All members are welcomed to attend.

It was good to see members Randy Frese and Dan Neiman with us last Friday.

Congratulations to member Jacob Huff on his recent marriage to Hope Cernea, the sister of fellow member Zeke Cernea.

Goes to two people including Mel Dillman who, after hearing Rick Gengenbacher strike the bell with more vigor than President Moore did, yelled out

 - "I guess your hammer is harder than his".

The runner-up would have to go to one of our speakers, Candy Miller, who, after sitting thru a brutally unfunny newscast, held up her script and said she had no BAD jokes in here while looking right at the Club's newscaster (Ouch).

The Field of Honor and Flags of Honor programs are coming together. We're now at $13,000 in sponsorships on our way to our goal of $20,000.

We are now able to take subscriptions online for the Flags of Honor program. Subscribers will have a full-sized US flag set up in their yard from dawn until dusk on Memorial Day, Flag Day, 4th of July and Labor Day for $30 a year. If they register before October 15, they'll also have their flag tagged in remembrance of a veteran of their choice in the Field f Honor this November. Sign up now for your flag and encourage your neighbors to sign up as well!

You can pay online when you make the subscription or mail a check for your payment. We want to be able to blanket entire neighborhoods, so encourage your neighbors to sign up!

Our Programs of Service

The National Exchange Club has four Programs of Service that all of our projects fall under. Those programs are Americanism, Community Service, Youth Activities and our National Project, the Prevention of Child Abuse.

This week, we'll focus on our Youth projects. Two of our more popular Youth Projects are the Youth of the Year and the Bud Willer A.C.E. award. As mentioned last week, this is the 29th year that our club has recognized seniors from QHS and QND. The Bud Willer Award goes back even further when past president Bud Willer suggested an award to recognize a student who had overcome circumstances in their lives in order to graduate. (Our award actually predates the National ACE award by about 10 years).

More recent is the Character Champions seminars and awards designed to recognize sportsmanship and character in our young sports leaders.

Finally, our support work with the hearing impaired programs at Quincy Public Schools dates back more than half a century. There are also numerous financial contributions that we make during the year to organizations in Scouting the Y and others.
