This Friday
Our program this week will be on the Give Kids a Smile project. Nationwide, more than 53 million school hours are lost due to oral disease and 53% of all 6-8 year olds have had tooth decay. Started in St. Louis, the Give Kids a Smile is now a national project coordinated by the American Dental Association. Join us for Quincy's finest hour on Friday and learn more about how this project operates.

Our speaker Friday was Valarie Grieving from the Blessing Hospital Hyperbaric Center and Diabetes Center. They primarily work with people with non-healing wounds and with those with auto-immune disorders. They are there to also educate patients and lend their support as well. Most people are in denial according to Mrs. Grieving. The center offers treatment utilizing one of the two 100% oxygen chambers that force oxygen to the wound area to help that person heal quickly. An alarming statistic is that 1 in 3 people in America will suffer from some sort of Diabetes according to the Center for Disease Control. The challenges that the center face happen to deal with Obamacare and Medicare which makes them become more pro-active in working with patients in preventive care. Club member Les Sachs gave a testimonial to the wound center at Blessing in that he utilized their services after his knee surgery and they quickly helped him heal. One other interesting statement made by Mrs. Grieving was that Adams County has one of the highest rates of diabetes in the State of Illinois. A very interesting topic ,that was initiated by an introduction from Doug Greenwell.

September Youth of the Month
Kathryn Engelmeyer, QHS

This marks our 29th year of presenting the Student of the Month and Student f the Year program. Chairman John Johannes introduced his committee of D. Len Biallas and Mike Llewellyn and indicated that they could use one more scholarly member (tough to find in our club!). This year's essay theme is "Investigating the Possibilities - Making the Community a Better Place to Live!"
Mike introduced our September Youth of the Month - Kathryn Engelmeyer of Quincy High School. Kathryn is ranked #1 in her class of 463 who leads with a passion for hard work. In addition to school activities in music, Scholastic Bowl and Key Club, Kathryn has been very active in the community, volunteering with the Salvation Army, Special Olympics, Good Samaritan Home and the Quincy Art Center. She also pent three summers at Space Camp.
Kathryn was accompanied by her mother, Jennifer Engelmeyer and QHS Principal Danielle Edgar.

This & That

Mike Lavery led us in prayer and after a restart and second shot, Rick Veihl got us started with the Pledge.

Art Awerkamp gave some updates on the Field of Honor and Flags of Honor project. We're at about $13,000 in sponsorships with the addition of J.M. Huber. Still looking for 7-10 more sponsors, so please let Art know if you know of anyone we can contact. The subscriptions for the Flags of Honor project are now available online at our website. (Se the side panel for more information).

President Curt reminded everyone that the raffle tickets for the B-25 Bomber Flight on November 8 are still available. $5 gets you a chance at 2 tickets. The proceeds will go to help offset the cost of bringing the plane in for a flyover for the Veterans Day parade. The drawing will be held October 31.

Evan Briddle, grandson of Dick Wentura and a Junior at Maryville University, was Dick's guest. Dick also had the winning ticket in the card draw (again), but, alas, drew the King of Spades - so close, and yet so far! Jackpot grows to $482 next week.

If you looked at your copy of Exchange Today, you'll see that Dennis Koch had his mug in there with the NEC Foundation board - feel free to use that to keep the mice away!

Line of the Week

The line of the week goes to Art Awerkamp. After our student of the month, Kathryn Engelmeyer, was introduced, President Curt Moore quipped that the two of them shared one thing in common, they both went to QHS, to which Art responded,

 - "But she'll graduate!"

The Field of Honor and Flags of Honor programs are coming together. We're now at $13,000 in sponsorships on our way to our goal of $20,000.

We are now able to take subscriptions online for the Flags of Honor program. Subscribers will have a full-sized US flag set up in their yard from dawn until dusk on Memorial Day, Flag Day, 4th of July and Labor Day for $30 a year. If they register before October 15, they'll also have their flag tagged in remembrance of a veteran of their choice in the Field f Honor this November. Sign up now for your flag and encourage your neighbors to sign up as well!

You can pay online when you make the subscription or mail a check for your payment. We want to be able to blanket entire neighborhoods, so encourage your neighbors to sign up!

Exchange Education

Our Programs of Service

The National Exchange Club has four Programs of Service that all of our projects fall under. Those programs are Americanism, Community Service, Youth Activities and our National Project, the Prevention of Child Abuse.

This week, we'll focus on our Community Service projects. The oldest project in our Program is the Book of Golden Deeds, dating back to 1919. 2015 will mark our 63rd Book presentation to one of the unsung volunteer heroes in our community. We'll also mark a milestone in the Law Officer of the Year award in 2015, as we recognize the 50th recipient of that prestigious honor. Coming up this month, we'll select the 6th Firefighter of the Year.

Another project that was started here in Quincy, that doesn't receive a whole lot of attention is the Adopt-a-Grandparent program. In it's current form, we match 5th and 6th grade students from St. Dominic School with seniors residing at the Illinois Veterans Home. Each month during the school year, we bus the students out to the Home, where the students and their adopted grandparents share some snacks and activities. Many of these seniors have no other family in Quincy and over the years, a number f the children have kept in touch with their "grandparent" even after they had moved on from the program.
