This Friday
Valerie Greving from the Blessing Hospital Hyperbaric Center and Diabetes Center will be our speaker this Friday. With Diabetes becoming more and more prevalent in America, some good information will be forthcoming this Friday. We will also hold the first of 6 Student of the Month programs as well. Bring a guest to Quincy's finest hour!

Denise Drebes, the District Manager of Junior Achievement for West-Central Illinois and Northeast Missouri, was our featured speaker last Friday. Denise informed us that students are being taught financial literacy through the JA program. A few years ago the JA program was almost nonexistent in the Quincy area with Hannibal doing quite well with the program. Since then, the JA program for kids has come to Quincy like gangbusters and Hannibal has remained steady.

Some 5,000 students were in the program last year and this year there are some 6,000 students utilizing the program including 4,000 in the Quincy Public Schools alone. The program is primarily geared for students in grades K thru 5 with expansion expected next year to the 6th and 7th grades. The JA program also exists at St. Peter's School for students in grades K thru 8. Junior Achievement will be holding a fundraising "Spooktacular Bowl-A-Thon" at Tin Pin Alleys in Hannibal on October 25th. To assist with their fundraising, the Exchange Club donated $100 to Junior Achievement. Carlos Fernandez, a JA board member, handled the introduction flawlessly.

This & That

The sound waves of the bell hadn't even diminished when Jared Haugh uttered the first words of our opening prayer.

The prayer was followed by what sounded like Dave Grim yelling across the bow of his boat the word "I" to initiate the Pledge of Allegiance.

Bruce Broemmel conducted the tail-twisting duties with a joke about somebody sneezing and their body shook after that. You just had to be there.

Brian Koch performed the 50-50 card draw duties with Dick Wentura gunning for the pot worth $437 (Dick personally has purchased $900 worth of tickets to try to win the jackpot). He had the right ticket but drew the 7 of Spades so the pot escalates this Friday.

President Curt Moore advised the Club of our pending involvement with Unity Church's "Unity Exchange Day" which should occur in late November or early December. Curt mentioned that it most likely will be held at the "Carol" Lindsay Center, wherever that may be located.

Curt also informed the Club of the board's decision to donate money to cover a sponsorship and to pay for a team led by Perry Terwelp for an upcoming Autism bowling tournament.

Mel Dillman explained that the Club has agreed to purchase two tickets for the upcoming B-25 flights during Veteran's Day. These flights will help offset the cost of a flyover during the Veteran's Parade. The Club will be raffling off the two tickets with a raffle ticket costing $5. We will sell them during our meetings for the next few weeks with the drawing to take place on October 31st.

During Carlo's Fernandez' introduction of our guest, he took the time to update us on the Honor Flight Program. This Thursday will be the 27th Honor Flight to our nation's capital. Rich Goughnour and his father will be on that flight. You can welcome home the Goughnours as well as all of the veterans on that flight at John Wood Community College this Thursday night when they return around 10:30pm.

Carlos also briefed us on the upcoming Fire Fighter of the Year program slated for October 24th. The program will feature retired USAF Lt. Col. Barry Cheyne who was at the Pentagon on 9-11. I am sure he will have quite a story to tell.

Joel Koch brought our only guest and it was Adam Gibson from Decatur. Decatur is starting up a new Exchange Club and Adam was here to see ours live and in person.

Line of the Week

Several to choose from but this week's honors go to Perry Terwelp and Art Awerkamp. Art, after watching and listening to President Moore struggle to get out information on the Unity Exchange program, said

 - "Boy, he explained that well, didn't he?"

Perry, meanwhile, was told by President Moore that the Club will give him the money needed to sponsor his bowling team. Then President Moore asked how much he would need? Perry responded

 -  "$10,000"

The Field of Honor and Flags of Honor programs are coming together. We're now over $11,000 in sponsorships on our way to our goal of $20,000.

Thanks to Eric Thomas and his crew, we are now able to take subscriptions online for the Flags of Honor program. Subscribers will have a full-sized US flag set up in their yard from dawn until dusk on Memorial Day, Flag Day, 4th of July and Labor Day for $30 a year. If they register before October 15, they'll also have their flag tagged in remembrance of a veteran of their choice in the Field f Honor this November. Sign up now for your flag and encourage your neighbors to sign up as well!

Our Programs of Service

The National Exchange Club has four Programs of Service that all of our projects fall under. Those programs are Americanism, Community Service, Youth Activities and our National Project, the Prevention of Child Abuse.

This week, we'll focus on our Americanism projects. Our newest projects - the Field of Honor and the Flags of Honor fall under the Americanism Program. In addition, Give-a-Kid-a-Flag-to-Wave, which was developed many years ago by the Exchange Club  Galesburg and adopted as a National Program, is one of our more popular projects. During the Dogwood Parade, we'll give away between 6-7,000 flags to kids of all ages.

Also under the Americanism Program, our big 20' x 30' U.S. Flag has used for parades, Gems Baseball games, the City's 9/11 ceremony and has hung over Mace in the past. Our service to our Veterans, the One Nation Under God programs, and Freedom Shrines that we've dedicated are other projects that we've done in the past. We also make a number of donations under Americanism - our sponsorship of the annual Flag Day concert and donations to Great River Honor Flight are some of the contributions we've made.
