Lots of useful information to share with a guest for Quincy's finest hour.

Friday Last

Our speaker last Friday was Bruce Boguski. Bruce travels around the country preaching sportsmanship to young people and he was the featured speaker for this week's Character Champions seminars. Bruce is an author, a columnist and a motivational speaker. He was involved in an automobile accident at the age of 17. He was struck by a drunk driver and was left in terrible condition. The prognosis was not good for Bruce to ever walk again. But Bruce proved them to be wrong. He visualized himself getting up and walking again. Some 4 months later he did just that.

He mentioned that most people hope that they have a good year ahead. Those people need to make themselves have a good year ahead. He spoke of a woman who couldn't read or write who was in terrible shape until she realized she can do something about it. Without reading and writing skills this woman actually wrote a book. She got someone to write the title for her and she did the rest. The book is called "Everything Men Know About Women". It had a cover and nothing but blank pages in between. The cost for the book was over $3 and she sold over a million copies. You do the math. She took a negative and turned it into a positive.

Bruce suggests you go for your ideas. Be positive about things. He also provided breathing tips for reducing stress and incorporated some club participation in proving his points. Thanks Bruce for a wonderful program and thanks to Jim Benz for his introduction.

This & That

John Spring was asked to provide the opening prayer and he accommodated adroitly (where's the dictionary?).

Dick Wentura uttered the 9th letter of the alphabet eloquently to commence the Pledge of Allegiance. The group utterance may not have been so eloquent.

Rick Gengenbacher conducted a fast paced tail-twisting session which included two jokes. One involving a popsicle and the other involving something else. Just leave it at that.

Brian Koch handled the 50-50 card draw worth $418 at the beginning and then $405 at the end. What gives with this concept? Brian must have had a $13 beer tab to pay later. Sonny Christner had the correct ticket but drew something other than the Ace of Spades needed (I never heard what card he drew).

Chuck Venvertloh mentioned to the Club that speakers have been booked thru Halloween when Dracula is scheduled to address the Club. After that he has no one booked. Not surprised no one would want to follow Dracula. Seriously, if you have an idea for a future speaker, let Chuck know.

Art Awerkamp announced that we now have $8,000 in corporate sponsorships for the Field of Honor Flags. Some $450 has also been donated by individuals to the cause as well. The next meeting for this project will be held at ETC Computerland on Wednesday, September 10th (Tomorrow) at 6pm.

Eric Thomas supplied the club with its only guest in Jeriod Thomas. Jeriod is club shopping and apparently narrowed it down to the Exchange Club or the Rotary Club. Guess we will be adding Jeriod soon!!! I'm being positive as our speaker suggested.

Last, but not least, hats off to Jimmy Louthen and Josh Klitz (Co-Chairs) and all involved with pulling off the 8th Annual Smoke on the River. Thanks to all who worked the event for the two days and to those who took the time to sell tickets. We sold out of pork on Friday night but Saturday's turnout was light compared to other years. The numbers are not in yet and we should have them in the weeks ahead. Great job guys!

By the way, the winner of the raffle was Darcy Green, Steve Green's 1 year old granddaughter.

Exchange Education

Structure (part 3)

The National Exchange Club consists of 30 districts organized into 11 regions. The Lincolnland District, along with the Wisconsin/Upper Peninsula District, Dakota Territory (North & South Dakota) and the old Minnesota District (which now includes Iowa and Nebraska as well as Minnesota) make up Region 3 and is represented by Regional Vice President Jim Ruzon of the Joliet club. The purpose of the National organization is to strengthen clubs, develop leaders and build new clubs. The National Board meets quarterly at the National Leadership Conference, the National Mid-Year Conference and the National Convention and also by teleconference. Current officers are National President Tom Karnes of Lincoln Park, MI, National President Elect Dan McQueeney of Charleston SC, Immediate Past President Don Wright of Murfreesboro TN, National Treasurer Ann Marie Logue of Gaithersburg MD and Executive Vice President Tracey Edwards of Toledo OH.

Operating under the direction of the National Board, the executive vice president is the active managing employee of the organization and is responsible for the day to day operations of the national office located in Toledo.

The officers and board members act as national representatives to district conventions and special club events when requested ( such as when National President Sid Mobley attended our anniversary celebrations a few years back). Each of the board members also serve on various standing committees along with other volunteers throughout Exchange in order to carry out the business of the Club.
