We had a very interesting program as our guest was Sheree Norman, a retired CSI (Crime Scene Investigator) from Las Vegas. Following a sterling introduction by Dick Wentura, Sheree informed the membership of the many facets of crime scene investigation. She worked for 25 years in the CSI unit as a civilian and prior to that was a member of the United States Marine Corps. Sheree discussed her climb thru the civilian ranks with the Las Vegas Metro Police Department covering a wide area of Southern Nevada including Clark County where Las Vegas is located. She talked about why some cases are solved quickly and why others take several years to end. She described a 16 year old case solved finally by one guilty party finally giving up his accomplices and an 8 year old case in which the victim was identified by his gold teeth and the arrest made 8 years later based on DNA results of evidence found. One signature line she shared was "Cases get old but homicides never go away". She was accompanied by her husband Jim.

This & That

Mike Lavery blessed the group with our prayer and Joel Koch, with cue card help from Bob Hays, uttered the word "I" to initiate the Pledge of Allegiance.

Jared Haugh conducted the 50-50 Card Draw worth $379 next week. Mike McLaughlin held the winning ticket but drew a 2 of Spades so the pot grows next week.

Jeff Dorsey handled the tail-twisting, stopping for a beer along the way. In an effort to exonerate himself from joke telling humiliation from weeks ago, Dorsey told the same joke again and even read the punch line to make sure it was done properly. Somehow it was funnier when I screwed it up the first time.

Art Awerkamp shared that the letters to businesses went out soliciting sponsors for the Field of Honor. So far $6,350 has been raised with several more awaiting final confirmation. Some members may be asked to contact some business owners in the next few weeks.

Jimmy Louthen asked again to please sell the raffle tickets for Smoke on the River. Again a reminder, this year's Smoke on the River event will feature an all you can eat Hog Roast on Friday night to kick off the fundraiser. Please share this on your personal social media outlet. Jimmy placed signup sheets on the tables. Please step up and help this weekend. As an incentive, a prime rib dinner will be presented to all workers for the event at the September 12th meeting. The rest of you get bread and water.

Good to see Jim Schlepphorst, Sheriff Brent Fischer, Zeke Cernea and Jacob Huff with us again.

Congratulations to Zeke and Jacob on securing the Illinois State Tumbling and Trampoline Competition to Quincy in 2015.

Rich Zeider has become a grandfather of twins. Rich's son, Mathew and his bride, Stepanie, are the proud parents of a boy and a girl. That makes 5 grandchildren for Rich. Congratulations.

This weekend! Get your tickets sold and come down for set-up Thursday evening and for all of the festivities on Friday and Saturday.

Field of Honor/Flags of Honor

Some have asked about the size of the Field of Honor. The Field will consist of 1,000 3' x 5' American flags on 7' poles placed in rows and columns spaced about 5' apart. So if you do the math, the field size in somewhere in the neighborhood of 160' x 160', or about 1/2 the size of a regulation soccer field. If you've ever attended one of these events, it's a pretty impressive sight.

Structure (part 2)

The Lincolnland District currently consists of 26 clubs spread throughout Illinois. From Belleville, Mattoon and Charleston in the south to the Lake County Clubs in the north and from Quincy and the Quad Cities in the west to Champaign and Urbana in the east. There are 11 divisions with 2-3 clubs in each division. Joel Koch represents Division 10 (Quincy and Beardstown) on the District Board of Directors. Joel's job is primarily training, membership growth and building relationships with the clubs within his division. The District Board consists of 11 Division Directors, District President Bill VanKeuren of Mattoon, President-Elect Dawn Portner , Immediate Past President Emy Trotz , Secretary Sandy Southworth all from the Naperville club and Lisa Alsip of Grayslake. The District's purpose is to build local Exchange Clubs, strengthen established clubs, promote participation in Exchange's programs of service and increase fellowship between the clubs.

The Board meets quarterly - twice by teleconference, then also at the mid-year conference and the annual convention. They will also meet in Quincy next May for a walk-through of the convention site.
