Club Meets at Noon each Friday at Stoney Creek Inn, 3809 Broadway in Quincy
2012-2013 Lincolnland District Exchange Clubs Best Bulletin Award Winner
This Friday
We have a very interesting program lined up as our guest will be Sheree Norman, a retired CSI (Crime Scene Investigator) from Las Vegas. This is a perfect opportunity to bring a guest with you to hear Ms. Norman and her introduction by Dick Wentura.

Quincy Senior High School Coach Rick Little and Quincy Notre Dame High School Coach Bill Connell took the opportunity to inform us of their season ahead and they enlightened us on some of their players as well.

For QND, the Raiders have 4 offensive and 2 defensive starters returning from last year's Coach Connell team. The Raiders practices have been hindered by the construction of their new playing surface which has limited their practice space. The heat has not been a positive either but the team takes about 20 water breaks each practice. They held their Blue and Gold scrimmage last Friday as they prepare to play powerful Rockford Lutheran in their season opener this Friday night at Rockford. Coach Connell is entering his 23rd season as head coach of the Raiders.

For QHS, Coach Rick Little is entering his 8th season at the helm of the QHS football program. The Blue Devils are coming off of an 8 win season and their first playoff victory in years. Coach Little talked about the program and how it has developed from the first grade on. There are now 125 kids playing football in grades 1 thru 6, 85 kids playing in grades 7 and 8 and 125 kids in the high school program. He is also impressed with the strength of his players with 31 players making it into the 1000 pound club in the weight room. Little mentioned how football mirrors life in that if you get knocked down you have to get back up. Quincy High school will open up against United Township at Flinn Stadium this Friday night.

The topic always comes up and it did at the meeting again about the two schools playing each other. Both coaches addressed the issue and basically both would love to play if they can work out a schedule that works for both schools.

QND needs to find an opponent of week nine this year and QHS needs to do the same for next year which led Jeff Dorsey to suggest that the Exchange Club football team, featuring some very large offensive linemen at one table, play both high schools those weeks. Coach Little basically accepted the idea and then you could hear a collective "Oh $***" at the table.

Special thanks to KHQA-TV's Sports Director Chris Duerr for handling the introductions of both coaches.

This & That

Jim Benz began our get together with a prayer which was followed by thePledge of allegiance begun by an authoritative "I" from Jimmy Louthen.

Bruce Broemmel handled the tail-twisting flawlessly and told a funny joke without missing a beat. That led to Art Awerkamp's comment of "Now that's the way a joke should be told", an obvious reference to someone's failure to find the punchline of two weeks ago. Thanks Art!

Brian Koch handled the 50-50 card draw with Eric Frese holding the winning ticket but Eric drew an 8 of Diamonds so the pot of $310 goes higher this Friday.

Dennis and Joel Koch were in Decatur as they start work on a new Exchange Club in that city. If anyone has any contacts in the Decatur area let Dennis know as they are seeking membership.

Art Awerkamp reminded everyone that there will be another Field of Honor meeting this Wednesday at 6pm at ETC-Computerland. Everyone is welcomed to attend.

Jimmy Louthen and Josh Klitz, our co-chairs for Smoke on the River, need everyone to sell those raffle tickets. Ticket sales are down somewhat from last year. Don't forget this year's Smoke on the River event will feature an all you can eat Hog Roast on Friday night to kick off the fundraiser. Look for signup sheets to help on September 5 and 6 to be on tables again this Friday.

President Curt Moore reminded everyone that the Club's board meetings at The Pier will, from now on, be held at 11:45am on the third Thursday of the month. So the next meeting will be on September 18th.

Michael Brzank of Germany returned for yet another visit as a guest of Rich Zeidler. That's four trips from Germany in a row just to eat lunch with us. I'm impressed! Cory Dean was a guest of Brian Koch and Nick Neuser was the guest of Rich Lavery. Nick is Rich's nephew so apparently Rich needed some yard work done. Hope Nick didn't fall for that trick.

Field of Honor/Flags of Honor

The Field of Honor - 1,000 American flags arranged in neat rows and columns, will be on display at the Illinois Veterans Home over Veterans Day weekend. We're currently looking for businesses to sponsor the event. Sponsorships are $1,000 and will get a couple of signs at the event, logo on the webpage for the year, as well as on the flyers and recognition in the media and at the event. We'll also throw in 2 subscriptions to the Flags of Honor. Please let Art or Dennis know if your business is interested.

The Flags of Honor program will follow next summer. For $30 a year, a homeowner can subscribe to have an American flag set up at their residence from dawn 'til dusk on Memorial Day, Flag Day, 4th of July and Labor Day, then in next year's Field of Honor Veteran's Day weekend.

Structure

The National Exchange Club is a not-for-profit corporation incorporated in the State of Ohio. The National Headquarters are located in Toledo. There are nearly 700 Exchange, Collegiate, Excel and Jr. Excel clubs located in the United States and Puerto Rico. Clubs are organized into 31 districts, our district being "Lincolnland", which encompasses all of Illinois and the eastern portion of Missouri. Each district is governed by a board of directors and officers who are elected at district conventions

The Districts are grouped into 11 regions - Lincolnland is part of Region 3 - which also includes districts that represent North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan - about 515 thousand square miles. Each Region is represented on the National Board by a Regional Vice President, elected by the members of the region at the National Convention.

In addition to the 11 regional vice presidents, the National Board consists of the National President, National President-Elect, Immediate Past National President and National Treasurer. The National President-Elect and National Treasurer are elected at the national convention, with the President-elect assuming the office of the National President the following year.

Next week - what the heck do all of these folks do?
