Mr. Ron Wallace, the Vice President and General Manager of Quincy Newspapers, Incorporated, owners of the Quincy Herald Whig, was our featured speaker. Mr. Wallace is an East Texas native and has been at his position since October of last year. He has been in the newspaper business for some 37 years and has been very impressed with Quincy's quality of life. According to Wallace, it is not the objective of the Whig to be first but it is the objective of the Whig to be right with a story. The goal is to provide verified facts for each story they publish. They strive to be fair and accurate with every story printed. Home delivery for the Quincy Herald Whig is up 4% in the last year which is bucking a trend nationally. They provide papers to 18,000 weekday subscribers and even more on Sundays. Recently, the Herald Whig captured 42 Journalism awards from the Associated Press and Illinois Press Association including second place finishes for Best Newspaper in Illinois (50-thousand circulations or less) and Best Newspaper Website in Illinois. The Whig recently asked for suggestions from their subscribers on how to improve their paper. In the weeks ahead the paper will utilize some of those suggestions as changes are coming in the design and layout of the Whig. Thanks to David Adam for his careful introduction of his boss.

This & That

Jim Benz initiated the meeting with the delivery of the prayer. It was followed by Dick Wentura's own version of the Pledge of Allegiance. Somehow Dick thought he bought the rights to the Pledge and began it with "My Pledge of Allegiance to the flag..."

This followed President Moore's utterance of "Welcome to America's Finest Hour". Our country is in real trouble if our hour was the finest in the whole country.

Curt mentioned the board agreed to donate $250 to the West Central Child Care Connection and $1,700 to the Salvation Army's Holiday dinner. We have upgraded ourselves from purchasing Cool Whip last year to potatoes this year for the dinner. Curt also reminded us that the board meetings at The Pier will, from now on, be held at 11:45am on the third Thursday of the month. So the next meeting will be on September 18th.

Chairman Brian Koch updated everyone on the Adopt-a-Grandparent Program. This is a program where we transport 5th and 6th grade students to the Veteran's Home once a month to bond with a veteran. It ends with a BBQ at the home near the end of the school year.

Art Awerkamp informed the Club that businesses are currently being contacted about sponsoring the Field of Honor event. We already have four businesses signed up at $1,000 apiece and they include County Market, ETC Computerland, Dennis Koch CPA and Country Financial. The goal is to get $20-thousand before the November event. Individuals can sign up for $30 for the Flags of Honor program next summer and we'll have individual signup sheets later for that part of the program. The object is to target specific neighborhoods to start with. The next Field of Honor meeting is set for Wednesday, August 27th at ETC-Computerland at 6pm. Everyone is welcomed to attend.

Jared Haugh was in the house and he conducted the 50-50 Card Draw which was worth $310. Rick Veihl had the winning number but drew a King of Hearts so the pot grows next week.

Smoke on the River Co-Chair Jimmy Louthen was not in attendance but President Curt Moore reminded people to sell Smoke on the River Raffle tickets. Thanks to Rick Veihl, Tina Veihl, Kevin O'Donnell, Josh Klitz, Jimmy Louthen, Curt Moore and Mel Dillman for selling nearly $1,000 worth of tickets at the K of C BBQ. An event that saw Mel Dillman take a header when he tripped over a drainage ditch. ("Down goes Dillman!"). We will be selling tickets again next year at the newly named "Mel Dillman K of C BBQ". Don't forget this year's Smoke on the River event will feature an all you can eat Hog Roast on Friday night to kick off the fundraiser.

Jeff Dorsey handed out The District's Street Dance tickets to those members who planned on attending the event.

Steve Peter's handled the Tail Twisting honors and told a joke including the correct punchline. He got some help from our resident funeral director Jared Haugh who made a great prop.

Michael Brzank of Germany returned to visit again as a guest of Rich Zeidler. I am beginning to wonder if Michael isn't Rich's "Devastated" Driver?.

National Recvoery Crusade
In 1933, America sagged beneath the weight of a severe economic depression. Despite these despararate times, the National Exchange Club had grown in both numbers and influence. When President Roosevelt requested the assistance of Exchange in the urgent task of national recovery, the challenge was accepted.

With local clubs leading the way, Exchnage embarked on an ambitious National Recovery Crusade, traveling hundreds of thousands of miles carrying a positive message of encouragement and enthusiasm. Cooperating with the National Recovery Administration, Clubs helped organize campaigns for civic and business revitalization.

To express the nation's gratitude, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Daniel Roper spoke at the 1934 annual convention, carrying President Roosevelt's personal "appreciation for the splendid cooperation rendered to national recovery by the Club". The address was carried nationwide on NBC radio..
