Executive Director Karen Points and Liz O'Donnell from West Central Childcare Connection were our featured speakers. The WCCC was founded in 1990 by the United Way of Adams County. It is now an independent agency and is funded by Federal grants. There are 18 other such agencies in the State of Illinois. WCCC serves 9 counties in and around our area. They have a staff of 14 people and provide services for Pre-K and early childhood learning centers and home based childcare providers. WCCC assists centers in their formation, provides continuing education and helps families with their payment of childcare. They currently assist 900 families with payments. It was a very informative meeting. Thanks to Kevin O'Donnell, husband of Liz, for his introduction.

This & That

Rich Zeidler began things with our prayer followed by Art Awerkamp's "I" to begin the Pledge. Bruce Broemmel handled the tail-twisting duties.

President Curt Moore reminded everyone to keep Gary Farha in their thoughts and prayers as he recuperates from surgery. Gary is expected to be discharged from Blessing Hospital this Friday.

Curt reminded us of the board meeting decision to approve a request for $250 for helping to transport Transitions clients to attend the K of C BBQ.

Speaking of the board meeting, the decision was made to move the monthly board meetings to 11:45am on the 3rd Thursday of the month beginning in September. They currently are held on the 2nd Monday at 11:45am of each month.

Steve Green provided an update on Gus Macker which showed that this year's event made over $20,000. Thanks for everyone's hard work to make that happen. Special thanks to Steve and Perry Terwelp for co-chairing the event. Both Steve and Perry have agreed to do it again for our 25th Gus Macker. Thanks guys!

Rick Veihl got the opportunity of a lifetime in being able to play the card draw game. He drew a 6 of Hearts so the pot swells even more.

Unfortunately, the club received the resignation of longtime member Dave Rees. Dave and Jean have purchased a home in Florida and plan on spending more time there. Good luck Dave, we will miss both of you.

Rich Zeidler brought a guest with him. Michael Brzank was in attended on Friday.

Following the meeting, a short board meeting authorized the sponsorship of a new club in Decatur, Illinois. Joel Koch will oversee its "birth".

For those who haven't, please remember to pay your dues which is overdue.

Thanks to Mel Dillman for taking the notes of last Friday's meeting in my absence

Line of the Week

Belongs to President Curt Moore who, while preparing to read the anniversaries of the week, glanced over at Mike Smith and said,

 -  "I'll try not to bring anyone out of the closet this week".

This was in reference to last week's anniversary announcement of "Mike and Jim (instead of Jill) Smith" made by Curt

Exchange Education

Harold Harter served as the first National Secretary (what today is known as the Executive Vice President)). The headquarters were permanently established in Toledo, Ohio and Harold soon became known as "Mr. Exchange". Harold served as Sectretary for nearly half a century and, as much as any individual, was responsible for the emergence of Exchange as a national organization. During his tenure, Exchange grew from 4 clubs to more than 1,100, making the largest exclusively American organization.

Under his guidance, the national programs of service began to take shape: The Book of Golden Deeds was adopted in 1923 and the Sunshine Special in 1924. Beginning the 1920's, Harter sensed the tremendous future that aviation would have and encouraged the board to get involved. More on the aviation national project later.
Harter retired in 1961 and passed away on September 24, 1960 at the age of 80.
