Proudly We Hail 2013
2013 Proudly We Hail Recipients
It is our annual "Proudly We Hail" Flag Day Program this Friday. Dennis Koch has been actively searching for people who proudly display the American Flag and he has found six of them that we will be honoring. They all have been invited to our meeting. We'll also be recognizing two recent West Point grads, so join us for a little Americanism during Quincy's finest hour!

Outgoing Executive Director of the Quincy Park District, Ed Seger, was our speaker. Mr. Seger joined the Quincy Park District in 2001 and became the Executive Director in 2012. Mr. Seger, a veteran of the U.S. Army is a graduate of Liberty High School and Western Illinois University, provided some facts and figures regarding the Quincy Park District.

The district is comprised of 923 acres with 20 picnic shelters, 2 swimming pools a 27 hole golf course, a batting cage, a miniature golf course, 29 park sites, 14 playgrounds, 17 lighted tennis courts and a marina. They have 27 full time employees and 230 part time seasonal employees. Their operational budget totals $3,227,560. According to Mr. Seger, a concern the Park District has is the declining totals of golfers using Westview Golf Course. Golf, in general, is seeing a decline in golfers all over the nation primarily due to the length of time it takes to play a round of golf. Young people are too busy to devote 5 hours to golf. Also of concern is the condition of an antiquated Wavering Pool. The water slide has exhausted it life span and needs work. Also people are buying inexpensive back yard pools and not going to the city pools as much. Softball team signups have been declining over the years too but have remained somewhat stable in this area. Softball play is declining nationwide and it is a trend the Park District is watching closely. Thanks to Curt Moore for his introduction

This & That

Jim Benz began things with a prayer including a mention about the   D-Day invasion of the beaches of Normandy, France 70 years ago.

Sonny Christner began the pledge by removing his hat and saying "I". He was so into his recital that he left his cap after the meeting ended.

Jared Haugh reminded everyone that the golf outing is coming up on June 20th at Spring Lake Country Club. If you are interested in golfing (the cost is around $45 to $50 with cart) please email Jared at www.bethjared@comcast.net. Remember, friends are welcomed to play as well and we will hold our regular meeting at Spring Lake at noon.

Curt Moore, filling in for President Chuck Venvertloh, mentioned that we received a thank you note for our donation to the Jackson Swimming Pool complex.

Steve Labs announced that the grand total from the Blue Ribbon sales came to $2507.50. Considering the ribbons cost a dollar each, Steve stated, "how we got 50 cents in there is beyond me". Thanks to Steve and Hy-Vee for handling this Child Abuse Prevention fundraiser.

Hy-Vee is having a "soft opening" of their new restaurant and Steve Labs has invited club members to attend for lunch on him from 11 to 1 on Wednesday (June 11th). He asks that you contact him to reserve a time that you will be attending. Thanks Steve for the opportunity.

Jimmy Louthen, the chairman for Smoke on the River, announced the dates for this year's event as September 5th and 6th. Kent Anderson said the Judges School will be held at JJ's Café on Saturday, August 2nd at a cost of $110. With that fee comes a KCBS membership.

Dick Wentura had the winning ticket and drew a 3 of Diamonds sending the pot to a whopping $200 for this week's drawing.

We had one guest on Friday and that was Abby Haugh, the daughter of Jared Haugh.

The Flag Day Concert by the Quincy Park Band is set for Wednesday, June 11th. We will be needing members to be there (6:15ish) to pass out American Flags to the crowd at Madison Park.

Rick Gengenbacher fleeced the flock as tail-twister and shared a few Macker stories as he worked his way around the tables.
