2012-2013 Lincolnland District Exchange Clubs Best Bulletin Award Winner

This Friday

Macker 2012The idea of Mike Lavery was born 24 years ago and is still going strong as the Gus Macker weekend has arrived. Macker officials will be with us and Steve Green and Perry Terwelp, who have put a lot of work into this year's event, will inform us of last minute details.
Bud Willer A.C.E. Award
Kennady Magee

In a jam-packed meeting, we began with the announcement of the Bud Willer A.C.E. Award winner announcement. A.C.E. is a National Exchange Club Program which stands for Accepting the Challenge of Excellence.

This program recognizes high school students who have made a dramatic change in their attitude and performance during their high school years. These changes have enabled the students to overcome adversities and prepare for graduation. Locally, the award is named after former club member Bud Willer who, after playing football in the 1940's at the University of Iowa, came back to Quincy and began working at the Department of Rehabilitation. After seeing some of his students overcome adversity he brought the idea to the club and it has been an annual award presentation every year since the early 1970's.

John Johannes had the honors of introducing Mark McDowell, Principal of Quincy Notre Dame High School. Mr. McDowell then introduced this year's winner Kennedy Magee. Kennedy transferred to this area and QND just before her senior year which is traumatic in and of itself but she did so with a hearing impairment called Microtia which has left her without the ability to hear in one ear. She did not let that affect her in that she participated in athletics at QND and made the honor roll as well. She also had a 26 on her ACT and is planning on attending MacMurray College. By winning the award, Kennedy will receive a $1,000 scholarship from the Quincy Exchange Club and is now eligible to receive a $2,500 scholarship from the Lincolnland District and perhaps a $10,000 scholarship from the National Exchange Club Foundation.

Character Champions

Then it was on to the Character Champions presentation to students in the area that exhibit good sportsmanship and leadership skills. Being a Character CHampion means doing the right thing - even when no one is looking! This year's Spring Sports winners were from Quincy Senior and Junior High Schools, Western Senior High and Junior High Schools, and Payson Senior and Junior High Schools. Winning from QHS was Andrew Eilers and from QJHS the winner was Breanna Bordewick.   From Western High School Nekoda Gering and from Western Junior High, Blair Borrowman. Kaylee Gregg and Melina Tedrow were the winners from Payson Senior and Junior High Schools, respectively. This is the 12th year for Character Champions and the 4th year for the inclusion of Junior High schools in the program. The next big Character Champions  seminars will be held on September 9th (Senior High Schools) and September 10th (Junior High Schools). Thanks to Jim Benz for handling the program.

Our main speakers were Mike Schuttler and Jim Bland with the topic being gun safety and conceal carry courses. Both are NRA instructors. The courses will teach people the facts on gun safety, when to fire your gun and when not to as well as what to say after you should fire your weapon. The cost of the Pistol Class is $120 and the same is charged for the Illinois Concealed Carry Class. Basically, if you have a gun to protect yourself at home, you need to take the Pistol Class and you don't need a gun for the class. If you plan on traveling and carrying your gun you should sign up for the Concealed Carry Class. You will need to bring your gun to that class. Both stated that it is not unusual for people sign up for the Conceal Carry class and then decide after the class not to carry after all due to the mental awareness of carrying. This & That

Jared Haugh began things with our prayer and a remembrance of the 5th anniversary of the passing of former member John Tripp who penned this bulletin for years after Paul Clarkson had done it.

Dave Rees started the Pledge of Allegiance with a robust "I".

Chuck Venvertloh informed the club of our Blue Ribbon donation to Teen Reach and the Cornerstone's First Steps Program, along with a separate donation to Camp Callahan. The ribbons sold came to $2,000. Thanks to Steve Labs for setting this up at Hy-Vee for the Club.

Chuck also thanked Cullen Duke for his efforts in putting together a great Golden Deeds Luncheon.

Curt Moore conducted the 50-50 Card Draw. Rich Zeidler had the winning ticket but drew a ten of Spades so the pot according to Curt "swells from $200 to $200 next week (I went to public school and that doesn't seem right?).

Here is the Gus Macker update: Per Perry Terwelp: For the first time in years the team total for this year will exceed last year's total with 419 teams signed up. That means we will operate on 29 courts and will need 29 scorekeepers so please sign up to do that. Per Vic Welper: We have 4 more court sponsors than last year bringing us to a total of 43. Per Dennis Koch: We will need members to help with registration both Friday and Saturday. Friday's registration hours will be from 1:30 to 7 which is a slight change to allow members to attend this Friday's meeting. The need on Saturday is huge as well.

Thanks to Kirk Frageman and everyone involved with court taping for Macker last Sunday morning.

Prior to the club meeting, Jared Haugh dispersed the winnings for the Kentucky Derby raffle, Rick Veihl and Joe Bocke were the big winners of $65 each. Thanks to Lenny Biallas and Jared for handling the event.

There is still time to purchase your $100 National Exchange Club Mega Raffle ticket. If you are interested in getting a ticket just go to www.exchangeraffle.com. You do not need to be a member to buy a ticket.

The Exchange Club Golf Outing will be held at Spring Lake Country Club on June 20th this year. We will also meet there for our meeting prior to teeing off.

Congratulations to Mike McLaughlin on his new position as Executive Director at Two Rivers Regional Council.

Due to a lack of desire to read this periodical or a lack of desire to greet people prior to the meetings, we are discontinuing the Greeters Program. Thanks to those who did actually served as greeters in recent weeks. With that said the greeters this week are Jimmy Hoffa and Amelia Earhart.

Our thoughts go out to Jim Totsch and his family on the loss of Jim's sister who passed away last week after her battle with cancer.

Countdown to Macker

It's Here!

Gentlemen, Gus Macker is our biggest fund raiser of the year and we need all hands on deck!

Please plan to put some time in at Washington Park this weekend - whether it's as a score keeper, working in registration or brackets or the hospitality tent, we need everyone's help to make Macker 24 a success.

Registration hours are 1:30 to 7 on Friday, 7 to Noon on Saturday and 8 to Noon on Sunday. The biggest push is on Saturday morning - we'll have about 1,200 players to register between 7 and 8:15 a.m. So, even if you are a scorekeeper, please consider helping out for the big push so we can get everyone to their courts in time for their first game. Contact Dennis Koch at dgkoch@dgkochcpa.com if you can help out!

Check with Steve Green (steve.green@princeagri.com) or Perry Terwelp ( perryterwelp@yahoo.com) to find out where else we need help!

The Original Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament was started in 1974 by Scott McNeal (alias Gus Macker) on his parents' driveway basketball court in Lowell, Michigan. It started with 18 friends playing competitively for $18.

The tournament continued to grow and in 1987 moved from Lowell to Belding and took to the road because of a tremendous demand from communities outside of the home base. The "Gus Macker All- World Tour" was greeted with enthusiasm and spectacular news coverage in every area. Over 10,400 players participated in five cities in that first year. Since 1987, the Macker Tournaments has expanded, holding both indoor and outdoor tournament in over 75 cities and with over 200,000 players and 1.7 million spectators enjoying 3-on-3 competition and family fun each year.

The first Gus Macker in Quincy was held 24 years ago. Team participation in Quincy peaked with nearly 1,400 teams, with courts spread from 4th to Sixth Streets, Vermont to York. More than $1 million has been raised by the Quincy Exchange Club and the various not-for-profit organizations that have helped out throughout the years.

The long range success and growth of the Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament is extremely important to us; therefore we will direct all our best efforts in providing a top-quality tournament. With hands-on experience since 1974, we understand the essentials necessary to organizing and directing a well-run tournament for the players, spectators, and sponsors. We will not compromise our ideals while making the Gus Macker a continuing, wholesome phenomenon across the USA.

The Macker has grown to national prominence, but is still run in a hometown, friendly manner. Teams of various age, size, and talent levels pay a team registration fee for the opportunity to compete against other teams of similar make-up and the chance to win top-quality trophies. By prohibiting alcohol or tobacco-related sponsors, the Macker has maintained the wholesome nature and pure fun of the event which draws players, spectators, and media wherever it is held. It has grown because the simple essence of the event, as originally established in Scott McNeal's parents' driveway, is maintained. The concept of Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball is being imitated across the USA but the Macker is still the one-and-only original game that is evolving as the hottest mass participation sport today.
