The 62nd Annual Quincy Exchange Club Golden Deeds Awards Luncheon was held at the Stoney Creek Inn. The deserved recipient was Patty Adam of Birthright of Quincy. Gary Peters handled the Master of Ceremonies position flawlessly with his usual wit and charm. He saluted some of our membership including Carlos Fernandez for his efforts with the Honor Flight program in the area.

Carlos mentioned that they have held 23 flights so far with 709 veterans (the oldest being 99 years of age) making the trips to Washington, D.C. He also spoke of the Club's involvement to help fund the program as well as the Club's involvement in funding last week's Illinois Department of Transportation's student seminars on safety education for young people.

Gary then proceeded to introduce the past Golden Deeds winners in attendance. He then turned things over to Joe Bordewick who introduced Patty Adam's family who were in attendance. Gary then mentioned the numerous nominating letters that were received on behalf of our winner.

Cullan Duke, the chairman for the event, then introduced the members of the Golden Deeds committee (Rich Gengenbacher, Davis Adam, Gary Farha and Dave Rees). He then mentioned that this particular project started back in 1919 and is the longest running project of the National Exchange Club. In introducing our winner, Patty Adam, Cullan mentioned that this honor goes to a person who goes out of their way to make our community a better place to live.

Our winner then thanked the Exchange Club and the community for their generous support of Birthright over the years. Patty has been at Birthright 34 of the 41 years of its existence. She actually succeeded Billy Brod and Kathy Peters Druffel at Birthright and both of those ladies were previous Golden Deeds Award winners.

Jared Haugh presented the Book of Golden Deeds keynote speech honoring our winner and did so with class and humor. He also mentioned his predecessor, John Tripp, who had handled the duties for years for the Club before his untimely death in 2009.

Jared mentioned that not all of Patty's stories were success stories but the common denominator in all of them is her desire to help others. She even left the waiting room while her husband Bill was having open heart surgery to assist a young lady in need. She left things in God's hands and did what she could do to aid someone else. That's Patty Adam and that's why she is the winner of the 62nd Annual Book of Golden Deeds

Countdown to Macker
Week

This week's featured Major Sponsor is WGEM.

WGEM-TV is the NBC-affiliated television station for the Tri-States area of Western Illinois, Northeastern Missouri, and extreme Southeastern Iowa that is licensed to Quincy, Illinois. It broadcasts a high definition digital signal on VHF channel 10 from a transmitter east of the city on Cannonball Road near I-172. The station is the flagship of Quincy Newspapers, and is a sister operation to the company's namesake, The Quincy Herald-Whig. Studios are located in the New Tremont Apartments (formerly the Hotel Quincy) on Hampshire Street in Downtown Quincy. Since the mid to late-1990s, WGEM has not mentioned its channel number on-air, instead choosing to be identified by its call letters.

The station signed on for the first time on July 5, 1953. WGEM has always been an NBC affiliate, but maintained a secondary ABC affiliation between 1953 and 1969 as well as from 1971 until the mid-1990s, and shared with CBS affiliate KHQA-TV during the 1960s. WJJY-TV in Jacksonville, Illinois was the primary ABC affiliate for Quincy between 1969 and 1971. When WJJY went bankrupt and shut down, WGEM resumed carrying a few ABC shows. The station also had a secondary affiliation with Fox between 1990 and 1994. It is one of the few and longest operating television stations in the country, outside of network owned-and-operated stations that has had the same call letters, owner, channel number, and primary network affiliation throughout its history.
