Dr. Lenny Biallas consumed a Mint Julep in celebration of his 75th birthday and then reviewed the racing sheets on the tables for the Kentucky Derby which was run last Saturday in Louisville, Kentucky.

Lenny took the time to review the sheet with everyone and informed the members of what some of those numbers mean on that sheet. He also ran down the race card for the Derby race. Lenny also provided some insight on the horses entered and also some info on the jockeys too. Another interesting fact was that the winning jockey and trainer get 10% of the horse's earnings .The members who elected to do so got a ticket with a number on it to enter a chance to win the Kentucky Derby pot.

Once informed, the Club watched three races and members with tickets with horse numbers on them rooted for their horse to win. If it did win, they were given a cash reward. There was no payout for placing or showing, which is horse betting terminology for second and third place.

Thanks to several stable boys, Eric Thomas, Dennis Koch and Jared Haugh for their assistance.
Youth of the Year
Terra Scranton

Dr. Lenny performed double duty as he presented the 24th Annual Youth of the Year Award to Terra Scranton of Quincy Senior High School. Terra wrote the winning essay to win the award and as a result she will receive a $1,000 scholarship and will represent our Club in the District competition. Terra plans on attending the University of Illinois at Champaign and eventually will attend medical school. Her parents, Rick and Pam Thurman, were on hand along with QHS Principal Danielle Edger and Counselor Mindy Jackson.

This & That

The meeting began with a prayer from John Spring followed by a very apprehensive Dave Poland who began the Pledge of Allegiance. Dave began with a demonstrative "I" and prayed that the rest of us would join in which we did.

Steve Peters fleeced the flock as the Tail-Twister telling a couple of horse jokes along the way in honor of the Kentucky Derby. He even made reference in one joke about a blond. This, with only one woman in the room, KHQA's Meghan Townley (who is blond) with a camera in hand. Man that's bold. Joe Radkins of WGEM was also in attendance.

Steve Green talked about Gus Macker and the need for teams to sign up on line at www.macker.comby the deadline of May 12th. Steve mentioned that we are on line with last year as far as teams signed up at this stage of things. The goal is for 500 teams after 412 signed up last year. He also mentioned the need for scorekeepers to sign up as well. Court sponsors are still needed. It's $300 to sponsor a court. Dennis Koch also needs help with registration for Gus Macker for both Saturday and Sunday (May 24 and May 25).

The Dogwood parade was held last Saturday in Quincy and Dave Poland and helpers passed out some 7,000 flags during the parade. The Boy Scouts carried our huge American Flag as well. Thanks to Dave, the Scouts and all who showed up to help Saturday.

President Chuck Venvertloh thanked Charlie Ledbetter for lining up the Teen Reach program.

The pot for the 50-50 card draw started over after Gary Farha won the pot last week. (did any of you notice Gary's new suit?) Steve Green had the winning ticket but drew an Ace of Hearts so the pot of $200 dollars swells to $201 plus some 35 bucks.

Don't forget to purchase your $100 National Exchange Club Mega Raffle ticket. There is still time to enter the National Exchange Club's Mega Raffle. The first Early Bird drawing winner was from Florida but in a video presentation Doug Greenwell won $2,500 as another early bird winner. Congratulations Doug. Dennis Koch revealed that our club has purchased more tickets than any other Exchange Club in the country with 38 tickets purchased. Remember, if you purchase a ticket for the Mega Raffle, the club will get $10 back. The grand prize winner, to be drawn on July 12th, 2014, will get up to $100,000 cash. Second prize is expected to reach $4,000 cash and third prize is expected to reach $2,500 cash. You can get your tickets today at www.exchangeraffle.com. You do not need to be a member to buy a ticket.

Dennis Koch also mentioned he is looking for nominations of a person properly displaying the American Flag to recieve the Proudly We Hail award at our Flag Day program. Any ideas, contact Dennis.

Remember April was Child Abuse Prevention Month and as a wrap up of the Blue-Ribbon campaign, sign-up sheets were on tables for people to help sell the ribbons at Hy-Vee Stores on May 16th.

Brant Erickson was a guest of Perry Terwelp and is also a prospective member.

The Exchange Club Golf Outing will be held at Spring Lake Country Club on June 20th this year. Work on your swing and invite a prospective member to enjoy lunch and play that day.

The scheduled Greeters Friday are Dave Rees and Bill Stalder.

We had no badge winner last Friday. Remember to put a quarter in the glass when you pick up you badge!
