Club Meets at Noon each Friday at Stoney Creek Inn, 3809 Broadway in Quincy
2012-2013 Lincolnland District Exchange Clubs Best Bulletin Award Winner
This Friday

We will all be "Off and Running" this Friday with Dr. Lenny Biallas as our lead jockey and speaker. We will all have an opportunity to bet on the ponies as Lenny shows a few races (thanks to stable boy Eric Thomas) during the meeting. His primary topic will be the Kentucky Derby. The betting windows will be open so bring a guest. Lenny will also handle our Youth of the Year event as well. That honor will go to Terra Scranton of QND. There's nothing like explaining the virtues of betting to the outstanding youth of America!

Mike Nobis and Dennis Williams joined us last Friday to discuss the Teen Reach Program in Quincy. Dozens of Quincy kids go to the Teen REACH Center after school for help with homework and just to have a safe place to go. The program is successful in that most of the kids start off with failing grades and end up with A's and B's. These kids, according to Mr. Nobis, are living day to day just to survive. Their future doesn't exist in their minds but Teen REACH is trying to change that mindset. Their battle isn't with the kids involved but with the parents and social lifestyles they deal with. The after school program at Irving School gives the kids discipline and provides some structure in their lives and they welcome it. With the program being Monday thru Friday after school, they collectively hate weekends and holidays when they are forced back into a home environment that is unsettling and in many cases dangerous.

Mr. Williams stated that in many cases these kids are given hope that they will just be able to get through the night and return to school the next day safely. Mr. Williams told a story of a 6th grader who was passed around from Mom to Grandma, back to a prison released Mom and lived in St. Louis, Springfield, Chicago and eventually got to Quincy. He was small for his size and got into a fight in school and was expelled. He got home and was whipped by his parents. He wanted to leave, but stayed for his little brother's sake. Mr. Williams also spoke of a 16 year old girl who had an abusive and drunk mother who would fight with her 6 kids including her smallest son. The mom would leave at midnight and go out leaving her with her 5 siblings to watch over. These were just two of many stories that could be told each and every day in Quincy. How sad!

One thing they asked of the Club was to see if there were any job or job shadow opportunities that these kids could get involved with. We were also invited to drop by anytime Monday through Friday at Irving School to see just what they do there. Thanks to both gentlemen for telling their story of Teen REACH. You could hear a pin drop while they were speaking. Thanks to Charlie Ledbetter for his phone call less introduction

This & That

Mike Lavery presented the prayer to start the meeting. It was followed by Gary Farha's "solo" version of the Pledge of Allegiance. It was so well done that John Wayne would have been happy with his performance. It actually was a "payback" for an incident pulled on your humble reporter weeks ago and what a payback it was (more on that later).

Bruce Broemmel tail-twisted the clan and told a nice "doll" story along the way.

Perry Terwelp talked about Gus Macker and the need for teams to sign up at www.macker.com. The goal is for 500 teams after 412 signed up last year. He also mentioned the need for scorekeepers to sign up as well since we have only 14 so far. Perry mentioned that we have 20 court sponsors so far and need 30 more to reach our goal. It's $300 to sponsor a court. Perry also has Gus Macker posters for the membership to display at your workplaces. Make sure you take some with you this Friday.

The Dogwood parade is coming up this Saturday and Dave Poland could use some help in passing out flags during the Parade. The Boy Scouts will be walking our huge American Flag that day. Please let Dave know that you will be available and meet at 24th and Maine at 9:15 this Saturday.

Chuck Venvertloh mentioned the Club received a thank you note from Pam Shaffer for being the Citizen of the Year and also one from John Wood Community College for being a hole sponsor for their golf tournament.

The pot for the 50-50 card draw starts over after Gary Farha drew the Ace of Spades and the $1030 pot that went with it. Some pay back for him!!! I guess he got the last laugh and greenback.

Don't forget to purchase your $100 National Exchange Club Mega Raffle ticket. There is still time to enter the National Exchange Club's Mega Raffle. Not sure who won the first Early Bird drawing which was held a few days ago (the winner was from Florida). The next early bird drawing is on April 30 and is worth $2,500. If you purchase a ticket for the Mega Raffle, the club will get $10 back. The grand prize winner, to be drawn on July 12th, 2014, will get up to $100,000 cash. Second prize is expected to reach $4,000 cash and third prize is expected to reach $2,500 cash. You can get your tickets today at www.exchangeraffle.com. You do not need to be a member to buy a ticket.

Remember April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and during April and May  the Quincy Exchange Club is asking for your support by purchasing "blue ribbons". These blue ribbons will be available for purchase at both Hy-Vee locations. So when you purchase your groceries this month, please purchase a blue ribbon to help prevent child abuse in our community.

Rodney Heimer, of Heimer and Associates Accounting, was a guest of Gary Farha. Rodney is a prospective member and is also a court sponsor for Gus Macker.

The Exchange Club Golf Outing will be held at Spring Lake Country Club on June 20th this year. Work on your swing and invite a prospective member to enjoy lunch and play that day.

The scheduled Greeters Friday are Dan Brink and Eric Barnes.

We had no badge winner last Friday. Think we just forgot to do it.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Steve Green and his family. Steve's mother passed away Sunday.
