This Friday

Mike Nobis joins us this Friday to discuss the Teen Reach Program in Quincy. Dozens of Quincy kids go to the Teen REACH Center after school for help with homework and just to have a safe place to go. But Teen REACH is offering a lot more. We will all find out what that is Friday.

We'll also have the presentation of the Bud Willer/Accepting the Challenge of Excellence award.

This & That

Perry Terwelp has Gus Macker posters for the membership to display at your workplaces. Make sure you take some with you this Friday.

Steve Green is still looking for more members to sign up to be a scorekeeper for Gus Macker. This is not a difficult job but one that needs to be covered. Please sign up to be a scorekeeper. To find out more about what is involved call Steve at 653-1858.

The Dogwood parade is coming up on May 3rd and Dave Poland could use some help in passing out flags during the Parade. The Boy Scouts will be walking our huge American Flag that day. Please let Dave know that you will be available.

The pot for the 50-50 card draw will be over the $1,000 mark when we get together Friday. I believe there are 21 cards left in the deck. Somebody is going to win it and it might as well be me.

Got your National Exchange Club Mega Raffle ticket yet? There is still time to enter the National Exchange Club's Mega Raffle. The Early Bird drawing was held last week. Not sure who the winner was. We should have that info at Friday's meeting. Somebody has won it and it might as well be me (have you heard that before?). If you purchase a ticket for the Mega Raffle, the club will get $10 back. The grand prize winner, to be drawn on July 12th, 2014, will get $100,000 cash. Second prize is expected to reach $4000 cash and third prize is expected to reach $2500 cash. You can get your tickets today at www.exchangeraffle.com. You do not need to be a member to buy a ticket.

The Student of the Year Announcement was scheduled for this Friday but has been postponed until May 2nd.

Remember that dues are due!

Remember April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and during the month the Quincy Exchange Club is asking for your support by purchasing "blue ribbons". These blue ribbons will be available for purchase at both Hy-Vee locations thru April 30th. So when you purchase your groceries this month, please purchase a blue ribbon to help prevent child abuse in our community.

The Exchange Club Golf Outing will be held at Spring Lake Country Club on June 20th this year. Work on your swing and invite a prospective member to enjoy lunch and play that day.

The scheduled Greeters Friday are Jim Benz and Travis Brown.

Countdown to Macker
Weeks

This week's featured Major Sponsor is the Quincy Herald Whig.

The corporation was formed in Quincy on July 1, 1926, as a publishing company upon the consolidation of the Quincy Herald, direct descendant of the Illinois Bounty Land Register first published in Quincy in 1835, and the Quincy Whig-Journal, descendant of the Quincy Whig founded in 1838.

The Herald was purchased in September 1891 by three men from Rockford, Charles L. Miller, Hedley John Eaton and Edmund Botsford. Miller had earlier founded the Rockford Daily Register, that city's oldest newspaper. Subsequently, Miller brought to the Herald his brother-in-law and nephew, respectively, Aaron Burr Oakley and Ray M. Oakley, the first two generations of the Oakleys in the newspaper business in Quincy. Miller spent four years in Quincy, returning to Rockford in 1896 to join Harry M. Johnson in ownership of the Rockford Republic. He retired as editor of the Republic in 1913 and died in 1921. Hedley Eaton retired in 1913 and died in 1936. Eaton's son John Dewitt Eaton stayed with the paper as Advertising Manager until his retirement in 1955.

Two brothers from Decatur, Frank M. Lindsay, Sr. and Arthur O. Lindsay, Sr. bought the Quincy Whig in 1915, with Arthur Lindsay taking up residence in Quincy as president and manager. Frank Lindsay remained in Decatur with the Decatur Herald and formed an association with another Illinois newspaper family, the Schaubs. In 1920, the Lindsays consolidated the Whig and The Quincy Journal, founded in 1883.

QNI owns a number of broadcasting properties, including the New Jersey Herald in Newton NJ, and TV and radio stations in Indiana, Minnesota, West Virginia, Iowa, Wisconsin and New York. Check out more of Quincy Newspaper's history here.
